In one observed cut of the Parse mirror, we analyzed 7,434,246 cited-page links across 3,159,290 cited pages and 503,370 websites in 701,353 AI answers to 18,107 organic prompts on ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode from May 24 through August 19, 2026.
Guide pages supplied 7.66% of cited-page links
A complete guide or guides token appeared in the page title or public address for 569,300 of 7,434,246 cited-page links, or 7.6578%. The links covered 258,716 pages on 81,157 websites.
DeltaV Digital found how-to guides at 4.5% in its top-30 sample across eight client brands. This study counts every observed link in a larger two-engine cut, so the percentages are not directly comparable. Together they challenge the idea that publishing guides is a default path to citations.
Takeaway
Guide pages appeared in 41.73% of cited answers
At least one guide-labeled page appeared in 292,661 of 701,353 cited answers, or 41.7281%. At least one appeared somewhere in the observed history for 17,783 of 18,107 prompts, or 98.2106%.
Prompt reach records whether the format appeared at least once across repeated answers. It does not predict whether the next answer will include one. Report link share, answer reach, and prompt reach separately.
Google AI Mode had 1.86 times the guide-page rate
Google AI Mode used 492,867 guide-labeled links among 5,770,388 cited-page links, or 8.5413%. ChatGPT Search used 76,433 of 1,663,858, or 4.5937%. The rate ratio was 1.8593 to 1, and the gap was 3.9476 percentage points.
Keep the engine in the audit. The aggregate gap does not establish a general engine preference because the study does not hold the engines' answer and prompt mixes constant.
Guide-seeking prompts had nearly three times the rate
Prompts that named a guide produced 4,979 guide-labeled links among 22,203 cited-page links, or 22.4249%. Other prompts produced 564,321 of 7,412,043, or 7.6136%. Only 67 observed prompts named guides, compared with 18,040 other prompts.
Query intent changes the source mix. Benchmark guide citations on the questions that guides are meant to answer instead of applying the corpus-wide rate to every content plan.
Takeaway
One quarter of guide labels appeared only in the address
The guide label appeared in the title only for 252,419 links, or 44.3385% of guide-labeled links. It appeared in both title and address for 176,788, or 31.0536%, and in the address only for 140,093, or 24.6079%.
A title-only audit misses one quarter of publicly labeled guide links. Preserve the cleaned public address with the page title when checking cited pages.
Editorial websites had the highest guide-page rate
Guide-labeled pages supplied 51,782 of 390,186 editorial links, or 13.2711%. Ecommerce recorded 12.2308%, blogs 11.3642%, SaaS 8.2882%, documentation 7.4397%, and health websites 6.2619%.
Semrush found that clarity, expertise signals, question-and-answer structure, section structure, and structured data were associated with cited pages. Format labels and text qualities answer different questions. Compare guide pages within a publisher category, then inspect the page itself.
Takeaway
More than one third of guide links also carried a decision label
A best, top, review, comparison, versus, or alternative label appeared alongside the guide label for 202,672 of 569,300 guide-labeled links, or 35.6002%. The remaining 366,628 links, or 64.3998%, did not carry one of those decision labels.
The guide bucket is not synonymous with educational content. Many cited guides are buyer-facing comparisons and rankings, so separate decision guides from explanatory guides in a content audit.
The top ten websites supplied only 7.77% of guide links
YouTube supplied 8,993 guide-labeled links, Google 8,328, Ones 5,585, Business Insider 5,105, Medium 4,723, and LinkedIn 3,302. The top ten websites together supplied 44,239 of 569,300 guide-labeled links, or 7.7708%.
Ahrefs found that title and address relevance helps shape ChatGPT's source selection. The broad website spread here means marketers still need a prompt-specific page list rather than a short universal publisher list.

Blockchain and Cryptocurrency recorded 2,434 guide-labeled links among 22,014 cited-page links, or 11.0566%. Advertising recorded 10.2960%, Content and Publishing 9.5644%, Artificial Intelligence 8.9870%, Software 8.8662%, Financial Services 7.1295%, Health Care 6.4743%, and Gaming 5.7923%.
Use an industry baseline before deciding that a guide portfolio is overperforming or underperforming. The observed differences describe the prompt and source mix and do not show that industry caused a citation.
The public label rule is a lower bound
The headline title-or-address rule returned 569,300 links, or 7.6578%. A title-only rule returned 429,207, or 5.7734%, and an address-only rule returned 316,881, or 4.2624%. Adding tutorial or tutorials raised the broad count to 582,829, or 7.8398%.
The rule found 1,831 links without a page title from the public address and zero duplicate answer-page rows. It does not read page content, judge quality, measure traffic, establish causal lift, or show whether a page changed an AI recommendation. The citation-absorption framework makes the same distinction: source selection is not proof that the answer used the source's substance.
What marketers should do
Guide-labeled pages supplied 569,300 of 7,434,246 cited-page links. Their rate nearly doubled between the two engines, rose to 22.4249% when the prompt named guides, and included a decision label in 35.6002% of guide links.
Map guide-shaped buyer questions first. Separate explanatory guides from comparisons and rankings. Keep the cited address, page title, engine, prompt, website category, and industry together. Inspect page substance instead of optimizing the guide label alone. Repeat the fixed method next quarter before calling any difference movement.
