The median measured page behind an AI citation runs 1,744 words

A citation is one cited page in one AI answer. A measured citation is a citation whose page has a successful crawl with a main-content word count, is not a PDF, and is not a google.com search or redirect link. Cited page length is that word count. Across 2,961,773 measured citations, the median cited page length was 1,744 words. One quarter of citations pointed to pages under 832 words, and one quarter to pages over 3,146 words. The mean was 2,342.6 words because a small share of very long pages pulls it up: one in ten citations pointed to a page over 4,898 words, and one in a hundred to a page over 10,685.

Counting each page once instead of each citation once gives a median of 1,516 words across 594,619 pages. Pages that get cited repeatedly are longer than pages cited once. Ahrefs measured an average of 1,282 words across 174,048 pages cited in Google AI Overviews, counting each page once. This study covers two different engines, ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode, and finds a longer typical page: a mean of 2,342.6 and a median of 1,744.

Takeaway

The typical page behind an AI citation is a mid-length article, not a short answer and not a long guide.

Three in ten citations point to pages under 1,000 words

Pages under 300 words received 297,642 measured citations, or 10.0%. Pages of 300 to 999 words received 590,621, or 19.9%. Pages of 1,000 to 1,999 words received 756,892, or 25.6%. Pages of 2,000 to 4,999 words received 1,036,289, or 35.0%, the largest band. Pages of 5,000 words or more received 280,329, or 9.5%.

Pages of 2,000 words or more took 44.5% of measured citations. Ahrefs found the opposite mix for Google AI Overviews, counting each cited page once: 53.4% of cited pages under 1,000 words and 16% over 2,000. Counted the same way, this study's pages were 33.2% under 1,000 words. The two engines measured here cite a longer mix. The next insight shows that one of them is close to the Ahrefs figure and the other is not.

On the same prompts, ChatGPT Search cites pages half as long as Google AI Mode

The matched prompt panel is the 15,601 prompts with measured citations on both engines. On that panel, ChatGPT Search's 557,941 measured citations had a median cited page length of 928 words. Google AI Mode's 2,244,766 measured citations had a median of 2,010 words, 2.2 times longer. Pages under 1,000 words took 53.4% of ChatGPT Search citations and 24.3% of Google AI Mode citations. Pages of 2,000 words or more took 21.2% and 50.2%.

The gap does not depend on the panel or the grain. Across all measured citations, the medians were 927 and 1,993. At prompt grain, taking each engine's median cited page per prompt, ChatGPT Search's page was shorter on 12,516 of 15,601 prompts, or 80.2%, and the median of prompt medians was 927 against 1,933.5. ChatGPT Search's under-1,000 share, 53.4%, matches the 53.4% Ahrefs reported for Google AI Overviews, although Ahrefs counted pages and this study counts citations. Google AI Mode's share, 24.3%, does not match it. The two Google surfaces cite differently sized pages.

This split explains why published content-length studies disagree. Ahrefs measured Google AI Overviews and found almost no correlation between word count and citation. SE Ranking measured ChatGPT and found pages over 2,900 words averaged 5.1 citations against 3.2 for pages under 800. AirOps measured ChatGPT and found pages over 5,000 words cited less often than pages under 500. Each study measured one engine. Measured on the same prompts, the two current engines cite pages of different length.

Takeaway

Keep separate length baselines per engine. One number for AI citations hides a two-to-one difference.

Homepages explain part of the gap, not all of it

ChatGPT Search sent 238,815 of its 558,206 measured citations to homepages, or 42.8%. Google AI Mode sent 61,399 of 2,403,567 to homepages, or 2.6%. A homepage is a URL with no path after the hostname. The median cited homepage ran 739 words, so the homepage habit pulls ChatGPT Search's median down.

Removing every homepage citation leaves medians of 1,207 words for ChatGPT Search and 2,034 for Google AI Mode. The gap shrinks from 2.2 times to 1.7 times and stays. ChatGPT Search cites shorter pages even when it cites deeper pages.

On the same website, ChatGPT Search picks the shorter page

Of 260 websites with at least 200 measured citations on each engine, ChatGPT Search's median cited page was shorter than Google AI Mode's on 197, or 75.8%. It was longer on 42 and tied on 21. For the median website, the Google AI Mode page was 1.67 times as long.

The table names the 12 shared websites with the most measured citations, each with at least 1,000 on both engines. On arxiv.org, ChatGPT Search cited pages with a median of 540 words, which is abstract-page length, while Google AI Mode cited pages with a median of 8,980 words, which is full-paper length. On monday.com the medians were 153 and 4,777. Business Insider is the exception: 657 words on ChatGPT Search and 52 on Google AI Mode.

Takeaway

The engines do not just cite different websites. They cite different pages on the same website, and ChatGPT Search takes the shorter one.

Best-of lists are the long pages; homepages, product pages, and docs are the short ones

We assigned each measured page to one of 14 page groups from its URL and title. Best-of and top lists took 930,726 measured citations, or 31.4%, and had a median cited page length of 3,000 words; 71.8% of those citations went to pages of 2,000 words or more. Blog and editorial pages took 558,902 citations, or 18.9%, with a median of 1,982. Head-to-head comparisons ran 2,008 words and alternatives pages 2,587. Wikipedia articles ran 2,092.

Homepages took 300,214 citations, or 10.1%, with a median of 739 words. Product and commerce pages ran 942, docs and help 960, pricing pages 805, and LinkedIn pages 771. Reddit threads ran 1,663. The length of a cited page follows its type: list and comparison pages are long, and brand pages are short.

Pages under 300 words received 297,642 measured citations. By page group, 87,435 of those citations went to other pages, 75,579 to best-of and top lists, 59,004 to homepages, and 34,365 to blog and editorial pages. By website, instagram.com led with 5,868 citations to pages with a median of 154 words, then quora.com with 5,003 and a median of 24 words, linkedin.com with 4,137 and a median of 233, and garagegymreviews.com with 3,490 and a median of 37.

A 24-word Quora page or a 37-word garagegymreviews.com page is what the crawler could read, not what a person sees. The under-300 band mixes real short pages with pages whose text the crawler did not receive. The word counts for these websites understate the page a reader gets.

Long pages are cited for more prompts, and the gradient holds within one website

Counting each measured page once, 49.9% of pages of 5,000 words or more were cited for two or more prompts. The share was 41.8% for pages of 2,000 to 4,999 words, 28.5% for 1,000 to 1,999, 21.8% for 300 to 999, and 27.2% for pages under 300 words. Mean prompts per page ran 3.10, 2.37, 1.76, 1.63, and 1.88 in the same order. The bump under 300 words is homepages, which are cited for many prompts about the same brand.

The gradient is not only a mix of websites. Within blog and editorial pages, 18.1% of pages of 300 to 999 words were cited for two or more prompts against 43.1% of pages of 5,000 words or more. Within reddit.com, the shares were 17.7% and 27.5%. SE Ranking found the same direction for ChatGPT: pages over 2,900 words averaged 5.1 citations against 3.2 for pages under 800. This is an association. A long page covers more questions, so it can be cited for more prompts; the length itself is not shown to cause the citations.

A page that answers several questions gets cited for several prompts. Length is a byproduct of coverage, not a target.

Brand-owned pages behind a recommendation run 1,049 words; third-party pages run 2,180

A citation link joins a ranked brand recommendation in an answer to a measured page cited for that brand in the same answer. A brand-owned page sits on the brand's primary website; every other page is a third-party page. Of 1,694,529 citation links, 566,829 pointed to brand-owned pages with a median of 1,049 words; 48.0% were under 1,000 words. 1,127,700 pointed to third-party pages with a median of 2,180 words; 22.8% were under 1,000.

Recommendation rank does not move page length. Brand-owned pages behind a #1 recommendation ran 1,060 words, behind #2 to #3 1,070, and behind #4 or lower 1,022. Third-party pages ran 2,089, 2,188, and 2,231. By engine, brand-owned pages ran 780 words on ChatGPT Search and 1,363 on Google AI Mode; third-party pages ran 1,758 and 2,234. Longer owned pages do not sit behind higher ranks in this window.

The engine gap held every month

To rule out changes in which prompts were tracked, we kept only prompt-engine pairs with measured citations in each of June, July, and August (through the 24th). On that panel, ChatGPT Search's 7,746 prompts had a median cited page length of 925 words in June, 943 in July, and 922 in August. Google AI Mode's 14,941 prompts had medians of 2,089, 1,972, and 1,946.

Google AI Mode's median drifted down by 143 words over the three months, and its under-1,000 share rose from 22.2% to 26.6%. ChatGPT Search did not move. Three months is a panel, not a trend, and the gap between the engines is about two to one in every month.

What we measured and what we could not

We started with 7,547,954 citations. 4,579,587, or 60.7%, pointed to pages with no successful crawl and word count in the window, 196 were google.com search or redirect links, and 6,398 were PDFs. That left 2,961,773 measured citations, or 39.2%: 30.7% of ChatGPT Search citations and 42.0% of Google AI Mode citations. Each website is counted at its root domain, so en.wikipedia.org counts as wikipedia.org, and pages on Google subdomains such as support.google.com are measured under google.com. Cited page length is the main-content word count from the page's latest successful crawl before the cutoff; boilerplate such as navigation and footers is removed before counting.

The measured set is not a random sample. A measured page averaged 4.98 citations in the window and an unmeasured page 1.83, so the measured set over-represents pages cited repeatedly. Repeat crawls mostly agree: counting every stored crawl with a word count, not only the successful crawls before the cutoff used above, 78.4% of 182,712 measured pages crawled two or more times kept their word count within 10%, with a median spread of 1%. Two independent checks agree with the headline. Exactly 1,480,876 citations sit below 1,744 words and 1,480,354 above. At prompt grain, ChatGPT Search's median cited page was shorter on 80.2% of matched prompts, and the median of prompt medians was 927 words against 1,933.5.

Counts measured over the stated window. Shares are of all 7,547,954 citations, except the two engine rows, which are shares of that engine's citations: 1,819,947 on ChatGPT Search and 5,728,007 on Google AI Mode.

What marketers should do

The median measured cited page ran 1,744 words. On the same prompts, ChatGPT Search cited pages with a median of 928 words and Google AI Mode 2,010. Best-of lists ran 3,000 words, homepages 739, product pages 942, and docs 960.

Write for the engine that cites your kind of page. A homepage or product page of 700 to 1,000 words is what ChatGPT Search cites when it names a brand, so keep those pages accurate and complete rather than long. A best-of list or comparison of 2,000 to 3,000 words is what Google AI Mode cites for a category question, so that is the page to earn or to publish. Compare your industry's median before calling a page too short. Track the cited URL and its length per engine for each priority prompt, and recheck after a page change before crediting the change.
