Enterprise CDN comparisons are tricky because performance and bandwidth price are not independent: the cheapest CDN on a $/GB basis may not be the best fit for APIs, video, security-heavy sites, or global latency requirements. Enterprise contracts also often differ substantially from public list prices.
Below is a practical comparison of the major enterprise-oriented CDN providers.
A CDN serving 95% from cache can be dramatically cheaper than one serving 70%, even at the same bandwidth.
Origin egress
Moving from CloudFront to another CDN can introduce additional origin-transfer costs depending on where your origin runs.
Requests
APIs, small objects, and video segments can create large request bills even when GB volume is modest.
Security bundles
WAF, bot mitigation, DDoS protection, and edge compute can exceed CDN bandwidth costs in enterprise deployments.
Rule-of-thumb selection
Choose Cloudflare when you want a broad edge/security platform and predictable pricing.
Choose CloudFront when AWS integration is the priority.
Choose Fastly when developer control, APIs, and rapid cache operations matter most.
Choose Akamai when you need a long-established enterprise CDN footprint and are willing to negotiate.
Choose Google Cloud CDN or Azure Front Door when your infrastructure is already centered on those clouds.
For a real procurement comparison, the most meaningful benchmark is usually a workload-specific model: monthly TB delivered, request count, regions, cache hit ratio, origin location, and required security features.
Comparing major enterprise Content Delivery Network (CDN) providers involves balancing raw edge performance, programmability, ecosystem lock-in, and distinct bandwidth pricing models.
1. Bandwidth Pricing Models
Enterprise CDN pricing varies drastically depending on whether a provider uses a metered per-GB model or a flat-rate unmetered model.
Cloudflare (Flat/Unmetered): Sits entirely outside the traditional per-GB pricing matrix. They charge fixed monthly or annual enterprise tiers where bandwidth is unmetered. For high-volume or heavy video/cacheable workloads, Cloudflare’s flat fee heavily undercuts competitors.
Amazon CloudFront (Pay-As-You-Go / Tiered): Standard tier pricing for North America and Europe clusters around $0.08 to $0.085 per GB for the first 10 TB/month, dropping significantly at higher commitment tiers. Highly cost-effective if your origin and data egress stay within the AWS ecosystem (e.g., pulling from S3).
Google Cloud CDN & Azure Front Door (Cloud-Native): Generally align with AWS pricing, hovering around $0.08 to $0.085 per GB for standard regional egress, with discounts for higher volume commitments or bundled enterprise agreements.
Fastly (Metered / Usage-Based): Sits on the higher end of public per-GB list pricing, running around $0.12 per GB in North America and Europe. However, enterprise contracts allow for heavily negotiated committed-use discounts (CUDs) that reduce these rates significantly based on traffic volume.
Akamai (Custom Enterprise Contracts): Akamai rarely relies on public per-GB meters; instead, they operate via customized, high-minimum annual contracts that bundle robust edge security (WAF, DDoS), professional services, and multi-CDN management.
2. Performance & Global Reach
Independent and vendor-backed performance benchmarks (measuring metrics like p95 Time to First Byte and cache hit ratios) show that the gap in raw delivery speed between top-tier networks has narrowed significantly, though their strengths differ:
Fastly: Frequently edges out competitors in raw processing speed and TTFB on developer-heavy and API-driven networks. Its VCL (Varnish Configuration Language) and WebAssembly (Compute@Edge) programmability allow for blazing-fast instantaneous cache purging and dynamic edge logic execution.
Cloudflare: Delivers exceptionally consistent, low-latency performance globally. Because of its massive scale and massive concurrent request volume, its edge network is deeply peered with consumer ISPs, keeping latency competitive down to the millisecond across most major networks.
Akamai: Boasts the most mature, pervasive legacy global footprint. While raw TTFB benchmarks on specific consumer networks can sometimes rank slightly behind Fastly or Cloudflare depending on the region, Akamai excels at routing traffic reliably through congested or complex enterprise/hybrid architectures.
Amazon CloudFront: Offers stellar performance if your origin infrastructure lives inside AWS datacenters. With 750+ points of presence (PoPs), performance within major AWS regions is top-tier, though configuration complexity is higher for multi-cloud setups.
