Questions and answers
We are looking for a CDN that provides deep observability into cache hit ratios and edge performance metrics. Which providers offer the most detailed analytics dashboards?
Which content delivery networks offer the best analytics for monitoring cache hit ratios and edge performance metrics? We need deep observability into our traffic.
What are the best CDNs for deep-dive analytics on edge performance and cache hit ratios?
Which CDN providers give the most detailed real-time metrics on cache hit ratio and edge performance?
When it comes to granular, second-by-second, and highly customizable real-time metrics regarding cache hit ratios (CHR) and edge performance, a few CDN providers stand out from the traditional crowd.
The top choices for deep, real-time edge visibility and the specific advantages of each include:
Fastly : Widely considered the gold standard for developer-centric, real-time observability. Fastly's architecture streams log data and metrics almost instantaneously . Through their Fastly Observability / Real-Time Analytics dashboards and streaming logs, you can track cache hit/miss ratios, TTFB, origin fetch performance, and byte/request ratios down to the second. Because it operates on a VCL (Varnish Configuration Language) foundation, you get hyper-detailed insight into why a request missed or hit the cache.
Cloudflare : Offers robust real-time analytics straight out of the box in their core dashboard. Cloudflare tracks requests, bandwidth, cache status breakdowns (HIT, MISS, BYPASS, etc.), and Workers execution metrics in a single pane. For enterprise tiers, their GraphQL Analytics API gives you raw, granular, real-time querying capabilities over every single edge request, making it exceptional if you want to pipe edge performance metrics into your own data warehouse or SIEM.
Akamai : Best-in-class for massive-scale enterprise media and web delivery. Akamai’s Akamai Control Center and data-streaming architectures (like DataStream) provide deeply comprehensive visibility into edge node behaviors, geographical distributions, and complex multi-layer caching efficiency (such as Cloud Wrapper). While historically more corporate and configuration-heavy, its real-time analytics handle massive peak traffic volumes without lagging.
Gcore : A strong contender, particularly in Europe and emerging markets, providing granular dashboard segmentation of cache hit ratios by content type and URL patterns. Gcore stands out for operational transparency, offering direct integrations like their Gcore CDN Stats for Grafana plugin, which lets you graph edge traffic, shield efficiencies, and status codes live inside your own observability stack.

Are you looking for out-of-the-box UI dashboards or API/Log streaming to feed an external tool like Datadog or Grafana?
What kind of content are you primarily serving (static assets, APIs, or heavy video/live streaming)?
If real-time cache-hit visibility and edge-level performance telemetry are the priority, I’d focus on Fastly, Akamai, and Cloudflare. They differ quite a bit in how deep and how real-time their observability goes.
Excellent — hit processing time, origin latency, status/error rates, HTTP versions, etc.
Excellent
Akamai
Excellent — CDN cache-hit rate and cache status
Real-time through mPulse/RUM; CDN telemetry available
Excellent — CDN edge time, origin time, RUM performance, geography, etc.
Excellent, particularly with mPulse
Cloudflare
Very good — cache status, hit/miss behavior, URLs, hosts, content types
Near-real-time analytics, but generally less granular than Fastly's 1-second API
Very good — request/traffic/error/cache analytics
Very good
AWS CloudFront
Good
Good, especially with CloudWatch
Good, particularly when combined with AWS observability
Excellent AWS integration

Fastly: strongest if you want raw CDN telemetry
Fastly is probably the one I'd investigate first for an engineering team that wants to measure the CDN itself, rather than just overall website performance.
Its real-time analytics API provides data in one-second intervals, with the latest data generally only about an aggregation delay behind real time.
Its edge metrics include:
cache hits and misses
edge hits and misses
hit ratio
average hit-processing time
hit/miss response bytes
HTTP status-code rates
HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 traffic
origin-related metrics
shielding metrics
FastlyFastlyThat's unusually useful for answering questions such as "Did latency increase because users are farther from the POP, because our cache hit ratio fell, or because the origin got slow?"
Akamai: strongest for CDN + real-user performance correlation
Akamai is particularly interesting if by "edge performance" you mean what users actually experienced, rather than merely CDN processing time.
Its mPulse system captures real-user performance data and can populate dashboards in real time. It exposes both CDN Cache Hit Rate and CDN Edge Time, while separately measuring origin time.
That gives you a useful decomposition:
browser → Akamai edge → origin
rather than just:
request → CDN → response
mPulse also supports segmentation by things such as geography, browser, bandwidth and page group.
Cloudflare: strongest combination of CDN + broad platform analytics
Cloudflare's Cache Analytics is quite detailed: you can break traffic down by cache status, hostname, URL/path and content type, and distinguish traffic served by Cloudflare from traffic that reached the origin.
The important caveat is that Cloudflare's request summary graphs can be sampled, with totals extrapolated from that sample.
So if your requirement is specifically high-frequency, programmatic CDN telemetry, I'd look at Fastly first. If you want a broad operational dashboard encompassing CDN, security, networking, and application traffic, Cloudflare becomes particularly attractive.
My practical shortlist
Fastly — best fit for deep, low-latency CDN/edge telemetry and APIs.
Akamai + mPulse — best fit for connecting CDN behavior to actual end-user performance.
Cloudflare — best fit for broad observability plus strong cache analytics in one platform.
CloudFront + CloudWatch — particularly compelling if your infrastructure is already heavily AWS-centric.
One subtle point: don't compare providers using only their headline cache-hit ratio. Fastly, for example, explicitly distinguishes edge cache hit ratio from a more global/offload-oriented cache ratio because they answer different questions.
If you're evaluating these for a production architecture, I can also give you a metric-by-metric comparison (cache hit ratio, POP-level latency, TTFB, origin latency, shielding, stale hits, purge latency, real-time API granularity, retention, and cardinality) for Fastly vs. Cloudflare vs. Akamai vs. CloudFront.
