ChatGPT Search vs Google AI Mode: same brands, different sources
The two newest AI search surfaces do not read the same web. On the same 18,206 prompts, ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode share only 6.2% of cited sources per prompt, while sharing 27.6% of named brands.

We compared 18,206 matched prompts, meaning the same prompts run on both ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode, from May 24 to June 25, 2026, covering 221,278 answers, 1,845,188 citations, and 35 industry groups, with search-engine redirect wrappers and links back into Google's own result pages excluded.
The engines agree more on brands than on sources
ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode do not read the same set of sources. On identical prompts, the average cited-source overlap is just 6.2%. The average named-brand overlap is 27.6%.
Overlap here is the share of a prompt's combined set that both engines have in common, averaged over the 18,206 matched prompts. That means the engines often arrive at a similar shortlist through different evidence. Optimizing for AI search as one blended channel misses the real difference: brand presence and source presence are diverging.
Takeaway
Google AI Mode is the source-heavy surface
Google AI Mode cited at least one source in 98.7% of answers and averaged 13.3 references per answer. ChatGPT Search cited in 65.7% of answers and averaged 3.7 references. Per prompt, AI Mode exposed 42.2 distinct domains versus 11.9 on ChatGPT Search.
The top sources are different lists
ChatGPT Search starts with Reddit, then tech-review, academic, news, encyclopedia, and developer sources. Google AI Mode starts with YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook, Medium, and Instagram. Reddit is the only source in both top three.

YouTube is an AI Mode source, not a ChatGPT Search source
The largest individual split is YouTube. It supplies 5.3% of Google AI Mode citations and only 0.11% of ChatGPT Search citations, about a 50x lean toward AI Mode. Facebook shows an even larger lean, while TechRadar and arXiv lean hard toward ChatGPT Search.
| 0.016 | 1.077 | Google AI Mode | ~66x | 1 | |
| 1.342 | 0.025 | ChatGPT Search | ~54x | 2 | |
| 0.106 | 5.315 | Google AI Mode | ~50x | 3 | |
| 1.028 | 0.105 | ChatGPT Search | ~10x | 4 | |
| 0.131 | 1.097 | Google AI Mode | ~8x | 5 | |
| 0.519 | 0.074 | ChatGPT Search | ~7x | 6 |
AI Mode leans into social platforms and video
Google AI Mode's most-cited source is YouTube, at 5.3% of its citations. Everything Google owns, YouTube included, reaches 5.5%, against 0.51% on ChatGPT Search. Its social-platform group reaches 13.0%, versus 7.7% on ChatGPT Search.
What we stopped counting: Google's own result pages and redirect wrappers
A search engine sometimes returns a link on its own host in place of the page it is citing. Two shapes appear in Google AI Mode answers: a link back into a Google results page, and a wrapper that redirects to the real page without naming it. Neither is a source, so neither is counted here.
Almost every google.com reference Google AI Mode returned in this window was one of the two. An earlier version of this study counted them, which made google.com the second most-cited source on Google AI Mode at 4.92% of its citations. Counted properly, google.com is 0.009% of its citations and ranks 962nd.
Takeaway
ChatGPT Search leans more toward vendor and specialist pages
ChatGPT Search sends 32.1% of citations to vendor or SaaS pages, compared with 22.3% for Google AI Mode. It also leans more toward editorial review pages and academic sources. That makes owned technical and product pages more important on ChatGPT Search than the social-heavy AI Mode source mix implies.
| Vendor/site | 32.09 | 22.27 |
| General web | 22.25 | 28.56 |
| Social | 7.74 | 13.03 |
| Editorial | 7.58 | 4.71 |
| Directory | 3.42 | 2.31 |
| Academic | 1.17 | 0.3 |
The top brands mostly overlap anyway
Despite the evidence split, the top brand lists are similar. Microsoft and Google take the top two places on both, and 12 of each surface's top 15 brands overlap, including Amazon, Salesforce, HubSpot, Notion, AWS, GitHub, Slack, LinkedIn, Microsoft Azure, and Google Workspace.
Takeaway
The gap in how much each engine cites held every week
The gap in how much each engine cited was not one unusual week. Across five full weeks, ChatGPT Search stayed between 3.4 and 4.3 references per answer, while Google AI Mode stayed between 11.5 and 17.7.
| Jun 1 | 3.64 | 13.93 |
| Jun 8 | 3.38 | 11.53 |
| Jun 15 | 3.54 | 12.77 |
| Jun 22 | 4.31 | 13.22 |
| May 25 | 3.96 | 17.7 |
The new surfaces split sources harder than the old pair
Classic ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews shared 10 of their top 25 sources in the earlier study of matched prompts. ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode share only 7. Brand overlap moved the other way, rising from 16.4% on the older pair to 27.6% here.
The operating rule: split source work by surface
If you need Google AI Mode coverage, YouTube, social platforms, and broad web aggregation matter more than the ChatGPT Search evidence mix suggests. If you need ChatGPT Search coverage, vendor pages, specialist editorial, developer sources, and academic sources matter more.
A single AI-search checklist is too coarse. Track the sources separately from the brands, and measure each surface on the sources it actually reads.
