YouTube is the most cited source domain, but the lead is narrow

Across the observed cut, YouTube logoYouTube is the single most cited source domain in AI answers, with 60,164 citations. That makes it the source AI engines reach for more than any other, ahead of every news outlet, encyclopedia, and forum.

The headline overstates the gap, though. YouTube logoYouTube sits just 8.4% ahead of Reddit logoReddit, which lands 55,505 citations. This is a citation-rank story, not a claim that video beats text across every answer.

Takeaway

A clear lead, not a runaway. YouTube logoYouTube and Reddit logoReddit are effectively the same tier of cited source.

Reddit reaches more questions than YouTube

Citation volume and reach are not the same thing. Reddit logoReddit appears in 11,622 distinct prompts to YouTube logoYouTube's 9,370, 24% wider reach. AI cites Reddit logoReddit across more questions; it just cites YouTube logoYouTube more times within the questions it does appear in.

Takeaway

Reddit logoReddit is the broader source. If your topic spans many questions, Reddit logoReddit is the source to watch.

Reddit carries far more brand associations than YouTube

Reach extends to brands, too. Reddit logoReddit is linked to 74,716 brand associations against YouTube logoYouTube's 50,747, roughly 47% more. When AI cites Reddit logoReddit, it tends to pull in more named brands per answer, which makes the forum a denser map of who gets mentioned alongside whom.

YouTube earns the most citations per question it appears in

Where YouTube logoYouTube wins is intensity. When it shows up in a prompt, it gets cited 6.42 times on average, the highest rate among the seven and well above Reddit logoReddit at 4.78 and Wikipedia at 4.36. YouTube logoYouTube behaves like an anchor source: it turns up in fewer questions, but is leaned on heavily once it does.

Takeaway

YouTube logoYouTube is an anchor, not a generalist. Reddit logoReddit is a generalist, not an anchor.

The top seven domains carry more than half of all citations

Citation attention is concentrated at the top. The seven leading source domains account for 53.0% of every citation in the full dataset. All other domains split the other half, so a handful of platforms shape a large share of what AI answers point to.

User platforms outrank publishers as cited sources

The top of the list is dominated by user-generated platforms, not traditional publishers. YouTube logoYouTube, Reddit logoReddit, Medium, LinkedIn logoLinkedIn, and Facebook logoFacebook are all places people post, while Wikipedia and Forbes are the only editorial outlets in the seven. AI leans on community and creator content as much as on edited media.

Reddit, not YouTube, appears in the most questions

Rank the seven by reach instead of raw citations and the order flips at the top. Reddit logoReddit appears in more distinct prompts than any other source domain in the seven, ahead of YouTube logoYouTube and well clear of the publishers. Which source matters most depends on whether you optimize for depth or breadth.

Reddit covers more brands than any other cited source

On brand associations, Reddit logoReddit leads the seven outright with 74,716, ahead of YouTube logoYouTube's 50,747 and far ahead of every publisher. For a brand trying to understand where it gets named in AI answers, the forum is the single richest source to monitor.

How to read this

Pick the metric that matches your goal. Raw citations tell you which source AI quotes most, citations per prompt tell you which source it leans on hardest, and prompt appearances tell you which source spans the most questions.

Do not read first place as video beating text. YouTube logoYouTube leads on volume, but Reddit logoReddit reaches more questions and more brands. The cited-source mix is split between intensity and breadth, and the two rarely point at the same domain.

How we measured this

We took the top seven source domains by citation count from a 30-day public index cut and compared them on citations, distinct prompt appearances, brand associations, and citations per prompt. Citations per prompt is citations divided by prompt appearances. The seven account for 53.0% of all citations in the full dataset.

Counts are aggregate across the AI answer engines in scope, ChatGPT logoChatGPT Search and Google logoGoogle AI Mode, and do not separate results by model. The figures describe an observed sample of AI answers, not every answer every engine produces, and not Perplexity, Gemini, or Copilot. Citation presence measures where AI points, not commercial impact, and this cut does not claim AI prefers video over text.
