When ChatGPT and Google recommend the same top brand, do they cite the same page?
Almost never. When both engines chose and cited the same top brand, they shared a cited page for it in 309 of 8,612 matched answer pairs.
ChatGPT and Google shared a cited page in 3.6% of matched pairs
A matched pair is one answer from each engine to the same organic prompt in the same run. ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode shared at least one cited page attached to their shared top brand in 309 of 8,612 matched answer pairs, or 3.6%. They cited entirely different pages for that brand in 8,303 pairs, or 96.4%.
Agreement on the first recommendation does not imply agreement on the evidence. Track the exact cited page on each engine instead of treating the shared brand as a shared source strategy. Ahrefs found 13.7% URL overlap between two Google products across 540,000 query pairs; this result measures the stricter case of page overlap attached to one shared top brand across ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode.
Takeaway
The engines still used different websites in 57.9% of pairs
The two engines shared a registered website attached to the top brand in 3,628 of 8,612 pairs, or 42.1%. A registered website groups every page that sits under the same domain name. The engines used entirely different websites in 4,984 pairs, or 57.9%.
Website-level reporting is less strict than page-level reporting, but it still misses more than half of the cross-engine difference. Keep both levels in a citation audit. BrightEdge found different brand sets on 61.9% of identical prompts across three AI products; this result starts only after two engines agree on the first brand and then measures their sources.

Takeaway
Google AI Mode attached four pages at the median; ChatGPT Search attached one
Google AI Mode attached 39,289 cited-page links across 8,612 top recommendations, with a median of four and a mean of 4.6 pages. ChatGPT Search attached 15,225 links across the same 8,612 top recommendations, with a median of one and a mean of 1.8 pages.
More attached pages create more chances to overlap, yet exact-page agreement remained 3.6%. Use engine-specific page-count baselines instead of interpreting a longer citation list as stronger agreement.

More cited pages did not produce more exact agreement
Exact-page agreement was 4.5% with two or three attached pages across the pair, 3.2% with four to six, 4.0% with seven to ten, and 2.1% with eleven or more. The four groups contained 2,085, 3,156, 2,345, and 1,026 matched pairs, respectively.
Citation volume alone does not explain page agreement. Compare page addresses in their standard form directly instead of using citation count as a stand-in.

LinkedIn and Datadog shared no exact cited page
Among displayed brands with at least 30 matched pairs, LinkedIn shared no page in 216 pairs and Datadog shared no page in 102. WeMod had the highest displayed page-agreement rate at 7 of 33, or 21.2%. HubSpot reached 4 of 58, or 6.9%, and Stripe reached 2 of 39, or 5.1%.
These brand profiles are audit starting points, not quality scores. Prompt mix differs by brand, so compare recurring page choices for the same brand and buyer questions before comparing brands.
No shared page appeared in more than seven matched pairs
NOCD, WeMod, and Plausible each had one shared page appear in seven matched pairs. Resend, Quimby Digital, and Y Combinator's cofounder-matching page each appeared in six. TransUnion SmartMove appeared in five, and HubSpot CRM appeared in four.
The shared pages were distributed across named brand and product pages rather than dominated by one universal source. Marketers should inspect their own recurring pages instead of copying one broad publisher tactic.
The result uses only pairs with one shared top brand and cited pages on both engines
The window contained 312,036 answers. Of those, 192,991 had a single top brand after merging name variants, and 28,229 same-prompt, same-run pairs chose the same brand. The main result uses the 8,612 pairs where both engines attached a cited page to that brand. Exact-page agreement was 3.6% in the main result, 2.7% from June 12 through July 6, 5.4% when each engine attached one page, and 4.1% when each attached at least two.
The rule for which pairs count isolates evidence choice after the engines already agree on the brand. It does not measure answers without attached brand citations, citation quality, factual support, recommendation accuracy, or causation. A second way of counting returned 309 of 8,612, while a check based on raw brand mentions returned the same shared-page count and one additional pair that qualified.

What marketers should do
Exact-page agreement was 3.6%, registered-website agreement was 42.1%, and Google AI Mode attached a median of four pages compared with one on ChatGPT Search.
Record the shared top brand, registered website, and exact cited page as separate fields for every priority prompt. Compare ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode separately. Investigate repeated page differences before changing content, and rerun this study over the same window length next quarter.
