For winter wakeups, the Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 is the best overall: it delivers high brightness, a realistic color spectrum and a long (20–90min) sunrise to counter dark mornings. If you need a low-cost option, choose the JALL; if you want app-controlled routines, pick Hatch Restore; if clinical light transitions matter, choose Philips SmartSleep.
3JALLBest budget fit when you want an effective, low-cost sunrise light under ~$50—provides color-changing lights and natural sounds but lacks premium brightness and clinical validation.43%
4Hatch RestoreBest when you want app-driven customization and routines: app-controlled sunrise, guided meditations and a sound library for tailored sleep/wake habits; less focused on raw brightness than Lumie.29%

For dark winter mornings, the best sunrise simulation alarm clock is usually one that is bright enough to actually affect your wake-up, has a long gradual sunrise, and doesn’t force you into a complicated setup. My top picks:
The Philips SmartSleep and the Body Clock Shine 300 are widely considered the best sunrise simulation alarm clocks for dark winter mornings, offering gradual, natural color shifts from deep red to bright white. []()
Waking up in the dead of winter when it's pitch-black outside at 7:00 AM is rough on your circadian rhythm. Traditional jarring alarms shock you out of deep sleep, leaving you groggy, whereas a sunrise simulation clock gradually fills your room with light, naturally signaling your brain to stop producing melatonin.
The top-performing sunrise simulation alarm clocks vary by budget and features, with standout options categorized below:

Why it’s great: Long considered a gold standard (and top pick by The New York Times Wirecutter ), this model features a truly smooth, clinically-backed color transition. It starts with a dim, Martian red-orange dawn glow before transitioning into a bright, room-filling yellow/white light. It also includes a sunset-fading feature, tap-to-snooze, and power failure backup.
Best for: Most people who want a reliable, scientifically designed color progression to combat winter grogginess. []()

Downside: fewer “smart routine” features than app-based clocks.
Best smart option: Hatch Restore 3
Best for: someone who wants a whole sleep routine, not just an alarm.
Sunrise wake light plus sleep sounds, wind-down routines, and app controls.
More customizable than most sunrise clocks.
Good if you like pairing your morning alarm with bedtime habits.
Downside: some features depend on the app/subscription ecosystem, and it’s less “set it and forget it” than Philips.
Best for seasonal-darkness concerns: Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300
Best for: people who want a longer, more adjustable sunrise.
Offers adjustable sunrise/sunset durations and multiple sounds.
Lumie has a long history making wake-up lights designed around daylight simulation.
Downside: availability and pricing can vary more by region.
Quick recommendation by situation
You hate waking up in pitch darkness: Philips SmartSleep
You want the nicest bedside “sleep system”: Hatch Restore 3
You want maximum sunrise customization: Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300
You are a very heavy sleeper: choose a bright model and keep an audible backup alarm; sunrise clocks are gentle wake aids, not guaranteed replacements for sound alarms.
For most people specifically buying for winter mornings, I’d pick the Philips SmartSleep because the light itself is the main event. If you also want meditation, sleep sounds, and routines, I’d move to the Hatch Restore 3.
When waking up before dawn in the deep of winter, a high-quality sunrise simulation alarm clock (or wake-up light) can completely shift your mood and energy levels by tricking your circadian rhythm into a natural, less-jarring awakening.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sunrise-alarm-clock/)
Depending on whether you want medical-grade dawn simulation, an all-in-one sleep sanctuary, or a budget-friendly pick, several standout models lead the market:
The Gold Standard for Pure Light Performance:Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light (HF3520)
Best Certified Medical-Grade Option:Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300
Why it’s great: Lumie designs certified Class 1 medical devices specifically for SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and winter blues . The Shine 300 features a fully adjustable 15-to-90-minute sunrise/sunset ramp, an auto-dimming display, a robust sound library, and an FM radio . It is wonderfully reliable and completely hub-free.
Best for Holistic Bedtime & App-Connected Routines:Hatch Restore 3
Why it’s great: If your winter sleep hygiene needs an overall upgrade, the Hatch Restore 3 functions as a sunrise alarm, a reading light, and an advanced sound machine . It pairs with an app for deep customization (guided meditations, sleep stories) but allows phone-free tactile control right on the device when you're ready to sleep.
Best Phone-Free Budget / Mid-Range Pick:Dreamegg Sunrise 1
Why it’s great: Wrapped in a soft linen-cotton aesthetic, this option keeps things simple with physical buttons (no frustrating app setups). It provides a reliable sunrise/sunset routine and packs an impressive 29 soothing sound profiles at a fraction of the cost of luxury machines.
To help narrow down which one fits your winter routine best, let me know:
What is your budget range?
Do you prefer a phone-free device with physical buttons, or do you want app integration for sleep stories and advanced scheduling?
If your main goal is getting out of bed when winter mornings are still dark, I’d prioritize brightness, a long/adjustable sunrise, and a reliable backup alarm over smart-home features.
Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light — best for dark winter mornings. It uses a colored, gradual sunrise and can reach roughly 300 lux, with natural sounds or FM radio. It also works without an app or subscription. Recent comparisons specifically favor it when the priority is the actual wake-up light rather than a broader sleep ecosystem.
Hatch Restore 3 — best if you want a complete sleep routine. It combines sunrise lighting with sunset routines, sounds and app-controlled schedules. Its sunrise can be customized, but reviewers note that it's not as bright as some dedicated wake-up lights, and some content requires Hatch+.
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 — best for maximum control without an app. Its sunrise duration is adjustable from 15–90 minutes, which is particularly useful if you find a 20–30-minute sunrise too abrupt.
Lumie Glow 150 — simpler/value option. It offers sunrise and sunset simulation without the complexity of the Hatch ecosystem.
What I'd buy for winter
Philips SmartSleep if you primarily want “make it feel like sunrise even when it's pitch black outside.” Its combination of relatively strong light, colored sunrise, natural sounds, and no required app makes it particularly well suited to that use.
If you're a very heavy sleeper, I'd lean toward a bright dedicated light such as the Philips or Lumie and keep a conventional audible alarm as backup.
One important distinction: a sunrise alarm is designed to make waking gentler; it isn't necessarily a substitute for a 10,000-lux light-therapy lamp if your goal is specifically treating winter seasonal depression/SAD.
If you tell me your budget (e.g. under $100, $150, $250) and whether you're a heavy sleeper, I can narrow it down to one or two models.
When trying to conquer pitch-black, freezing winter mornings, a good sunrise simulation clock does more than just make noise—it triggers your circadian rhythm by gradually increasing light to suppress melatonin and gently boost cortisol.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sunrise-alarm-clock/)
Lumie pioneered the category, and their devices are certified Class 1 medical devices specifically recommended for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and winter blues.
The Glow 150 features an exceptionally smooth, realistic red-to-yellow hue gradient that mimics a true dawn rather than just turning a bright white light on . It also includes a fading sunset mode to help you wind down at night. You can explore details or purchase directly via the Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150 Shop.
Philips SmartSleep Wake-Up Light (HF3520) (Best for Pure Light Intensity)
If you are a heavy sleeper who needs a massive punch of brightness to get going, Philips' high-end models excel with high lux output.
It transitions smoothly through colored gradients (red to orange to bright yellow) over 20 to 40 minutes and features a wide array of pleasant natural wake-up sounds.
If you prefer controlling your sleep/wake environment via an app and want an all-in-one sound machine, reading light, and dawn simulator, Hatch is a favorite.
It lets you completely customize color palettes, custom routines, and wind-down content, though note that some advanced library features require a subscription.
If you want to test out the sunrise alarm concept without dropping over $100, Jall’s popular Amazon-favorite model offers reliable color-changing sunrise simulation, FM radio, and multiple natural sounds at a fraction of the cost.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sunrise-alarm-clock/)
To help narrow down the best choice for your bedroom, let me know:
What is your budget?
Do you prefer physical buttons on the clock or an app-controlled smart device?
Are you looking for something that is strictly an alarm/lamp , or do you want robust white noise / sleep-sound machine features too?
If your main problem is dark winter mornings, I’d focus on a clock that gets genuinely bright, has a gradual 30–60 minute sunrise, and doesn’t require your phone to work.
1. Philips SmartSleep — best for dark winter mornings
This is the one I’d pick if your priority is simply waking up more naturally when it’s still pitch-black outside. Its colored sunrise gradually brightens, it has 20 brightness levels, natural wake-up sounds/FM radio, and it works without an app. Independent comparisons put its maximum output around 300 lux, and multiple 2026 reviews specifically highlight it for winter wake-ups.
Current price I found: about $139.
If you want more than an alarm
Hatch Restore 3 - $169.99 (Hatch)
2. Hatch Restore 3 — best for a whole sleep routine
The Hatch is better if you want sunrise + sleep sounds + bedtime wind-down routines + app control. It can build a complete evening/morning routine and is currently around $170. The trade-off is that some content requires Hatch+, and reviewers note that its light isn't as powerful as some dedicated wake-up lights.
A good middle ground
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 - $234.99 (Walmart - The Lot Store LLC)
3. Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 — best if you want lots of control without an app
It allows sunrise/sunset durations from 15–90 minutes, has 15 wake/sleep sounds, and is designed as a dedicated wake-up light rather than a smart sleep ecosystem.
What I'd buy
For winter specifically, my shortlist would be:
Philips SmartSleep — if you want the strongest case for a dedicated, simple winter wake-up light.
Hatch Restore 3 — if you want the best combination of alarm, sleep sounds and bedtime routines.
Lumie Shine 300 — if you want a traditional, highly adjustable wake-up light without subscriptions.
One important distinction: a sunrise alarm is not the same thing as a clinical bright-light therapy lamp. If you're asking because winter mornings leave you feeling unusually sleepy or low, that's a separate consideration.
If you tell me your budget (e.g. under $100, $150, $200) and whether you're a heavy sleeper, I can narrow it down to one.
When waking up during pitch-black winter mornings, a good sunrise simulation clock helps suppress melatonin (the sleep hormone) and trigger cortisol (the alertness hormone) gradually, avoiding the jarring shock of a standard audio alarm. [](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sunrise-alarm-clock/)
The best options on the market vary depending on your budget and whether you want clinical-grade light therapy or smart home features:
Why it's great: Lumie invented the wake-up light, and their devices are certified Class 1 medical devices researched for treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The Shine 300 features a smooth, customizable sunrise/sunset duration (15 to 90 minutes), shifting realistically from a dim red glow to bright warm white. It also includes an auto-dimming display and multiple nature sounds. [](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sunrise-alarm-clock/)
Why it's great: A perennial top pick by testers (like Wirecutter ), it uses a striking, highly effective colored sunrise curve starting from a deep red/orange hue into a bright, room-filling daylight white. It has intuitive tap-to-snooze and stellar build quality, though it occupies a larger footprint on a nightstand. [](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-sunrise-alarm-clock/)
Why it's great: If you want a sleek, modern aesthetic paired with robust app integration, white noise libraries, guided meditations, and a custom sleep-and-wake routine builder, Hatch is a favorite. It acts as an all-in-one nightlight, sound machine, and gentle sunrise alarm.
Best Budget Pick:JALL Wake Up Light
Why it's great: If you want to test out a sunrise simulator without spending over $100, this popular Amazon choice features a reliable 10-to-60-minute gradual brightening cycle, dual alarms, color options, and built-in radio/nature sounds at a fraction of the cost. [](https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbes-personal-shopper/article/best-sunrise-alarm/)
Would you prefer a recommendation focused strictly on medical-grade SAD treatment (Lumie) , an all-in-one app-connected sleep device (Hatch) , or something on a strict budget?
Bright, convincing sunrise simulation: It gradually changes from reddish dawn tones to warm yellow over about 30 minutes. Independent testing has consistently found Philips’ sunrise particularly realistic and bright.
No app or subscription: You can set it and leave your phone alone.
20 brightness levels, plus natural wake-up sounds and FM radio.
Sunset mode: Useful for creating a gradual wind-down at night.
Especially good when sunrise is much later than your desired wake time—exactly the problem you get in winter.
The alternatives
Hatch Restore 3 - $169.99 (Hatch)
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 - $234.99 (Walmart - The Lot Store LLC)
Best overall smart option — Hatch Restore 3: Better if you want elaborate bedtime routines, lots of sleep sounds, and app control. Sleep Foundation currently rates it its best overall sunrise alarm, while WIRED notes that its sunrise is not quite as bright as Lumie's.
One important distinction: a sunrise alarm is great for waking up when it's still dark, but it isn't equivalent to a 10,000-lux light-therapy lamp. If you're specifically trying to combat winter low mood or seasonal symptoms, I'd look at a separate bright-light lamp rather than relying on the alarm clock alone.
Best overall for a natural light gradient and pleasant wake-up sounds. It transitions smoothly from a deep red-orange hue through amber and finishes with bright white over 20 to 40 minutes. It also includes a sunset-fading feature and intuitive controls.
Best for maximum brightness and heavy sleepers. It features fully customizable sunrise and sunset durations (15 to 90 minutes) with a wide color spectrum and 15 different natural wake-up audio tones or FM radio.
Best mid-range budget option (around $50), offering dual alarms, 7 color options, and simple controls without needing an app or Wi-Fi.
Best budget-friendly pick (under $40) featuring simple physical buttons, multiple sound choices, and a 30-minute gradual brightening cycle. [](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-YNd4Z69Xo&t=29)
Key Features to Look For in Winter
Color Spectrum: Look for models that start with a dim, authentic reddish-orange glow before transitioning to bright daylight. This mimics real dawn and triggers natural melatonin reduction.
Customizable Duration: Winter mornings require a longer ramp-up time (30–60 minutes) to gently pull your body out of deep sleep compared to bright summer months.
Audio Pairing: Ensure the ascending alarm sound pairs smoothly with the peak of the light cycle so you aren't startled awake in total darkness if the light isn't enough. [](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-YNd4Z69Xo&t=29)
If you'd like, let me know your budget and whether you prefer physical buttons or smartphone app controls , and I can narrow down the ideal model for your bedroom.
For waking up in the dark winter months, the best sunrise simulation alarm clock depends on whether you care most about realistic light, smart features, or simplicity. My top picks:
🥇 Best overall: Hatch Restore 3
Best for: People who want a complete sleep/wake routine.
Why it stands out:
Excellent sunrise and sunset routines
Lots of calming sounds, sleep stories, and wind-down options
Easy to customize through the app
Attractive bedside design
Helps make dark winter mornings feel less abrupt
Downsides:
More expensive
Some content requires a subscription
App/Wi-Fi dependence may annoy people who want a simple clock
Best winter use: Set a 30-minute sunrise that begins with deep orange/red light and ends bright white before your alarm.
🥈 Best for the most realistic “sunrise”: Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light
Best for: People who mainly want light therapy-style waking without apps.
Best winter use: Especially good if your problem is “my bedroom is pitch black at 6:30 AM.”
🥉 Best for winter blues / SAD-style needs: Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300
Best for: People who want a strong sunrise/sunset lamp from a company known for wake-up lights.
Why it stands out:
Warm, natural sunrise colors
Adjustable sunrise duration
Good sunset mode
No subscription required
Downsides:
Less “smart” than Hatch
Availability varies by region
Best budget option: Dreamegg Sunrise Alarm Clock
Best for: Trying the concept without spending $150–200.
Sunrise simulation
White noise/sound machine features
Much cheaper than premium models
The light quality usually won’t match Philips or Lumie, but it can be a good entry point.
My recommendation by situation
If you are…
Buy
A very heavy sleeper in a dark winter bedroom
Philips SmartSleep
Wanting the nicest overall sleep routine
Hatch Restore 3
Struggling with dark mornings and seasonal mood changes
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300
Unsure if sunrise alarms will help
Dreamegg
A small tip that matters: place the clock within 1–2 feet of your face and slightly above mattress level. Many people are disappointed because they put the light across the room where it is much less effective.
If I were buying one specifically for a Chicago-style winter (late sunrise, cloudy mornings, dark commutes), I’d choose Philips SmartSleep for pure waking power or Hatch Restore 3 if I also wanted a better bedtime routine.
Why it’s great: Lumie actually invented the wake-up light concept and specializes in medical-grade light therapy devices . The Luxe 700FM offers customizable sunrise durations (15 to 90 minutes), mixed low-blue LEDs that mimic a real sky gradient, high-quality Bluetooth speakers, an FM radio, and over 25 sleep/wake sounds.
Best for: Premium seekers who want luxury audio features, highly customizable durations, and top-tier build quality.
Add to list
Why it’s great: A step down in price from the Luxe, the Shine 300 still hits the sweet spot with an incredible depth of color (deep reds fading into bright white), 15 alarm sounds, an FM radio, and a bright maximum light setting that doubles as an effective reading lamp.
Best for: Those who want Lumie's elite light-realism without paying for luxury Bluetooth speakers.
Add to list
Why it’s great: This is a budget-friendly, compact footprint choice. A rare feature at this price point, it allows you to program independent dual alarms with separate light and sound settings—making it fantastic for couples on different morning schedules.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers or couples with staggered wake-up times.
To help narrow down the ideal choice for your bedroom, let me know:
What is your approximate budget?
Do you prefer a clock with built-in Bluetooth/radio or something simple and distraction-free?
Are you sharing the bed with a partner who wakes up at a different time?
Best premium/simple option — Lumie Bodyclock: Excellent if you want a particularly bright, lamp-like sunrise without an app. WIRED's current favorite is the more expensive Luxe 700FM, while the Shine 300 is the smaller version.
Best budget — Dreamegg Sunrise 1: Around $65 and gives you sunrise simulation plus sleep sounds without requiring an app.
