For a wide interior opening, my top choice is a hardware-mounted metal gate, especially if your dog is medium/large or tends to push on gates.

🥇 Best overall: North States Deluxe Hardware-Mount

North States Deluxe Hardware Mount Dog Gate

$109.99

38.3–72" wide

Steel construction

Hardware-mounted, so it doesn't shift when a dog leans against it

Walk-through door

Current listing: about $110

Strong choice for a permanent room-to-room boundary

Independent 2026 comparisons also consistently put the North States/Toddleroo Deluxe Décor among the best wide-opening gates, particularly because it reaches 72" and uses a secure hardware mount.

When looking for a dog gate for a wide opening (typically anything over 48 inches up to several feet), the "best" choice really depends on your dog's size/strength and whether you need a walkthrough door.

Top-rated options tailored to wide spaces include:
My dog needs to stay in one room, but I have a very large doorway to block off. Can you recommend a gate that fits wide spaces?
I'm trying to block off a large doorway to keep my dog in one room. Can you recommend a gate that fits wide spaces?

A retractable gate is much less visually intrusive and rolls away when you need the opening clear. There are models around 72" wide; however, I'd choose a metal gate instead if your dog is a strong pusher/chewer.

If the opening is REALLY wide

Regalo Double Door Super Wide Gate & Play Pen

$129.99

This is a better format when you're trying to create an entire contained zone, rather than simply blocking a doorway. The multi-panel design can be configured into different shapes.

My recommendation: If you tell me the exact width of the opening (e.g. 60", 72", 84", 96") and your dog's approximate weight/breed, I can find the best 2–3 gates that will actually fit and compare their current prices.

Type: Hardware-mounted, multi-panel metal gate (covers up to 72 inches or up to 87+ inches with extensions).

Why it’s great: Recommended by expert testing outlets like The New York Times Wirecutter , this style features a wide walk-through door panel in the center with a secure double-locking system. It is sturdy, highly customizable for angled or straight walls, and looks stylish.

Type: Freestanding multi-panel wooden gate (can configure to fit wide openings or convert into a pen).

Why it’s great: If you prefer wood over heavy metal and want something flexible that doesn't necessarily require drilling into your walls, Richell's multi-panel system locks securely at specific angles (90∘90 raised to the composed with power 9 0∘ and 180∘180 raised to the composed with power 1 8 0∘) to block off wide floor plans. Many models also include a convenient lockable walk-through door.

Type: Heavy-duty aluminum/metal hardware-mounted gate.

Why it’s great: Known for ultimate durability, Cardinal Gates are ideal for large, powerful dogs who might knock over or lean heavily on flimsier tension gates. It's built for wide hallways and expansive room entries.

Retractable Mesh Gates (e.g., Cardinal Gates or similar wide mesh options)

Type: Wall-mounted roll-out mesh barrier.
Why it’s great: If you want something discreet that rolls completely out of the way when not in use, a wide retractable mesh barrier can span large openings cleanly without a rigid metal frame getting in the way.[2]

To help me narrow this down to the exact right fit for your home, tell me:

How wide is the opening (in inches)?
How big or strong is your dog (are they a small puppy or a large, determined jumper)?
Do you prefer a hardware-mounted gate (screwed into the wall) or a freestanding/pressure option?
