We analyzed 4,393,034 brand recommendations across 738,228 answers on ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode from May 24 through August 22, 2026, and rolled each of the 236,204 recommended brands up to its owner through 25,038 verified ownership edges.

203 of the top 1,000 recommended brands are sub-brands

A recommendation is a brand mention that carries a recommendation rank in a ChatGPT Search or Google AI Mode answer. A verified ownership edge is a parent link in the Parse brand graph that was manually reviewed, adjudicated, or sourced from a public registry such as Wikidata; automatic guesses are excluded. A sub-brand is a brand with a verified ownership edge to a parent.

We ranked all 236,204 recommended brands by recommendation count and rolled each one up to its owner. Of the top 1,000, 203, or 20.3%, are sub-brands. That is about 1 in 5. The list of names AI produces is shorter at the company level than it looks at the brand level.

The top 100 recommended brands belong to 87 owners

Among the 100 most recommended brands, 22 are sub-brands, and after roll-up the 100 brands belong to 87 distinct owners. Slack sits under Salesforce, Google under Alphabet, Booking.com under Booking Holdings, and QuickBooks under Intuit.

Because the roll-up uses verified edges only, 87 is a ceiling on the true owner count, not a floor. Known ownership links that are not yet verified in the graph would lower it further.

Alphabet owns 30 of the top 1,000; Microsoft owns 19

Alphabet has 30 brands in the top 1,000 recommended brands, or 3% of the entire list. Microsoft has 19 and Amazon has 10. Three companies own 59 of the top 1,000 names.

The next tier is owners with multi-product portfolios: Adobe, Atlassian, Grafana, and Salesforce each place 6 brands; HubSpot, Sony, and Zoho each place 5.

Alphabet's portfolio collected 70,795 recommendations, more than any single brand

Summed across its portfolio, Alphabet collected 70,795 recommendations, or 1.6% of all 4,393,034. The most recommended individual brand, Datadog, collected 12,908. Microsoft's portfolio collected 59,213 and Amazon's 34,408; together the top 3 owners collected 164,416 recommendations, or 3.7% of all.

Portfolio breadth drives this. Alphabet had 318 distinct brands recommended at least once, and 95 with at least 100 recommendations. A #1 pick is a recommendation ranked first in its answer.

80 of the 203 sub-brands are separately named companies, not product lines

The 203 sub-brands in the top 1,000 split two ways. 123, or 60.6%, are product lines of the same company, such as Stripe Billing under Stripe or Microsoft Azure under Microsoft. 80, or 39.4%, are separately named companies under a corporate owner: Trello under Atlassian, Splunk under Cisco, CeraVe under L'Oréal, Vrbo under Expedia Group, and Petco under CVC Capital Partners.

The second group is the one readers miss. A product line signals its owner in its name. A separately named company does not, so the shortlist looks more independent than it is.

17.3% of all recommendations went to sub-brands

Across the full corpus, not just the top 1,000, sub-brands received 758,235 of 4,393,034 recommendations, or 17.3%. That is about 1 recommendation in 6.

This is a floor. It counts only brands with a verified ownership edge; every unverified ownership link would move a brand's recommendations into this share.

In 1 in 3 markets, one owner holds two or more top-10 slots

Portfolio double-dipping: one owner holding two or more slots in a market's top-10 brand list. A market shortlist here is a market's top 10 brands by mentions over the window, measured only where all 10 slots have at least 20 mentions, which leaves 1,806 markets.

In 587 of those 1,806 markets, or 32.5%, one owner holds 2 or more of the 10 slots. In 93 markets, or 5.2%, one owner holds 3 or more.

Takeaway

A 10-brand shortlist often contains fewer than 10 companies. Count owners before you count competitors.

Booking Holdings holds 4 travel booking slots under 4 different names

In the travel booking deals market, Booking.com, Agoda, Priceline, and Kayak all sit in the top 10, and all four belong to Booking Holdings. Agoda, Priceline, and Kayak give no hint of a shared owner, and Booking.com reads as one product rather than the holding company behind the other three.

Meta holds 6 of the top 10 in digital advertising and retargeting tools, DJI holds 6 in drones and video capture gear, Autodesk holds 5 in engineering design software, Texas Instruments holds 5 in STEM learning platforms, and Citi and Capital One each hold 4 in a credit card market.

Alphabet double-dips in 50 markets

Ranked by the number of markets where they hold 2 or more top-10 slots, Alphabet leads with 50 markets, followed by Microsoft with 23, Amazon with 22, and Meta with 20. Alphabet's largest single-market count is 7 slots.

These are the owners most likely to appear across a category under several names at once. A brand competing in any of their markets faces one budget behind multiple shortlist entries.

Alphabet's top 10 recommended brands run from Google Gemini at #19 to Google Sheets at #191

Alphabet's highest-ranked brand is Google Gemini at #19 overall with 6,423 recommendations, followed by Google Workspace at #34 and Google itself at #82. YouTube, Google Search, Google Cloud Platform, Google Cloud, Google Cloud BigQuery, Firebase, and Google Sheets complete the portfolio's top 10.

No single Alphabet brand cracks the overall top 15, but ten Alphabet brands sit inside the top 200. Breadth, not a single flagship, is what makes Alphabet the largest owner in the data.

Every consolidation figure here is a floor

The roll-up uses 25,038 verified ownership edges covering 10,727 owners, with chains at most 4 edges deep. We excluded the graph's automatic ownership guesses because most are unreviewed. The cost of that choice is missing true edges: GitHub, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Figma, and Tableau have no verified edge in the graph, so they count as standalone brands here even though their corporate owners are public knowledge.

So the real owner counts are lower than 87 and 820, and the real sub-brand counts are higher than 22 and 203. Recommendation ranks exist only for ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode from May 24, 2026, so this study makes no claims about earlier engines or about movement over time. Market shortlists are mention-based top-10 lists; markets with fewer than 20 mentions in any top-10 slot were excluded.

The GEO takeaway

Consumer research has long shown that a few companies own most supermarket brands. This study shows the same structure inside AI answers: 203 of the top 1,000 recommended brands are sub-brands, and in a third of markets one owner already holds multiple shortlist slots.

Map your AI competitive set at the owner level, not the brand level. If two of the shortlist entries you chase share an owner, you are competing against one company's budget twice, and displacing either one still leaves the owner on the list. For portfolio owners the play inverts: separately named brands in the same market can hold shortlist slots that one house brand never would.
