Chewy is the preferred choice for online shopping value, reliable recurring order savings, and responsive customer service. Petco is best for owners who require in-person services such as veterinary care, grooming, training, and same-day access to products, which remain unavailable through exclusively online retailers.

Petco advantage: Physical stores make same-day purchases, in-person returns, grooming, training, and other services more convenient.
Bottom line: For recurring food/supplies and hassle-free online shopping, Chewy has the stronger overall value proposition. For in-store convenience and services, Petco may fit better.
When comparing Chewy and Petco , both are major players in the pet industry, but they cater to slightly different shopping habits and operational strengths. Deciding which offers better value and customer service depends on whether you prefer a pure online experience or an omnichannel (brick-and-mortar plus digital) approach.[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)
Petco provides reliable customer service, but its support is split between online operations and physical store staff. While in-store employees can offer immediate, face-to-face assistance, resolving complex online orders or return issues through their digital or phone support channels can sometimes feel less streamlined than Chewy's dedicated 24/7 setup.[](https://www.forwardme.com/blog/petsmart-vs-chewy)
Value and Pricing
Chewy shines on recurring staple items (like bulk dry food, litter, and treats) through its Autoship program, which typically gives an extra discount on your first auto-order and ongoing savings. Their free-shipping threshold is generally easy to clear for large pet households, though individual item pricing fluctuates compared to big-box competitors.[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)
Petco offers competitive pricing and strong value through its Vital Care membership tiers (which give regular discounts on grooming, nutrition, and veterinary care). If you regularly utilize in-store services, local same-day pickup, or vital care perks, Petco's ecosystem can drastically shift the overall economic value in your favor.[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)

My practical take
For mostly online shopping, Chewy has the more straightforward value proposition. Its 365-day return window, free returns, convenient Autoship, and strong delivery infrastructure make it particularly attractive if you're regularly buying food, litter, medications, or other consumables.
Petco becomes more compelling if you actually use its physical-store ecosystem. For example, if you buy food and use grooming, training, veterinary care, or frequently need something immediately, the ability to combine those services with Perks/Premier can change the economics substantially. Petco also advertises online price matching against Chewy and several other retailers.
Bottom line
Mostly online + recurring supplies: Chewy
Store access + grooming/vet/training: Petco
Best return policy: Chewy
Best for immediate/local purchases: Petco
Best rewards ecosystem if you use multiple pet services: Petco
Simplest overall shopping experience: Chewy
So rather than one being universally cheaper, the better value depends heavily on whether you're buying products only or also using Petco's services.
When comparing Chewy and Petco , both are giant heavyweights in the pet care industry, but they operate on very different models. Which one offers "better" value and service depends heavily on whether you need physical in-store care or purely digital convenience.[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)
Petco: Offers customer support via online channels and in-person at their physical retail locations. However, customer service reviews are much more mixed. While individual store experiences vary wildly depending on your local management and staff, corporate or app-based customer support generally doesn't match the universal acclaim and proactive empathy of Chewy’s digital support team.[](https://www.facebook.com/fb-answers/petco-vs-chewy-customer-service/?ref=related_queries)
Value and Pricing
Chewy (Best for pure delivery value & Autoship):
Prices are consistently competitive, and their Autoship subscription model typically takes an extra 5$ off your first auto-ship order and around 5% to 10% off recurring deliveries without requiring a paid tier.
Standard retail pricing is very similar to Chewy, but the value equation changes if you utilize their paid loyalty/membership program, Vital Care.
If you regularly use in-store services like grooming, veterinary clinics, or dog training, Petco’s membership tiers can yield significant cumulative savings that an online-only retailer like Chewy structurally cannot compete with.[]()
Choose Petco if: You value immediate same-day in-store pickup, need localized physical services (grooming, vet care, training), and can maximize a paid Vital Care membership.[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)
If you let me know what specific products or services you use most (e.g., specific prescription food, monthly grooming, or basic toy deliveries), I can help you figure out which platform will save you more money.
Choosing between Chewy and Petco comes down to whether you prioritize pure e-commerce convenience and legendary customer support or an integrated omnichannel experience with physical stores and grooming. Neither is universally cheaper or better for every pet owner, as they operate on distinct structural models.[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)
Customer Service
Chewy (Winner for Support): Chewy has built its entire reputation on empathetic, ultra-responsive customer service. They are famous for 24/7 availability, no-hassle refunds (often issuing a refund and telling you to donate the unused food to a shelter if your pet dislikes it), and sending personalized handwritten sympathy cards or hand-painted portraits when a pet passes away.
Petco (Good, but Variable): Petco's online and phone customer service is adequate, but your experience can vary depending on whether you deal with corporate support or visit a local retail storefront. Because Petco has physical locations, you can handle immediate returns and exchanges face-to-face, which some people prefer to waiting on an email or phone call.
Value and Pricing
Chewy (Best for Hands-off Reordering): Chewy’s Autoship program offers a dependable initial discount (usually around $5-$20 off your first recurring order) and a steady ongoing discount (typically 5%) on subsequent auto-deliveries. Prices are competitive, though heavy items like large bags of kibble or cat litter are priced dynamically. Shipping is free on orders over a set threshold (usually $49).[](https://pawprices.com/blog/chewy-vs-petco/)
Petco (Best for In-Store Perks & Hybrid Shoppers): Petco’s Repeat Delivery program mirrors Autoship with similar recurring savings, but Petco shines on value if you take advantage of their paid loyalty program (Vital Care ) or buy online and pick up in-store (which frequently triggers an extra 10% to 20% discount). Petco also offers frequent "buy X get Y back" or "buy 9 bags, get the 10th free" punch-card style rewards on select premium dry foods.[](https://www.reddit.com/r/DogFood/comments/1cf9xn2/do_you_purchase_your_dogs_food_from__or_your/)[[2]()](]()]()

Customer service
There is some measurable difference in the available complaint data. Chewy is currently BBB-accredited with an A+ rating, although it also has hundreds of complaints and some recent customers report shipping and refund problems.
Petco's BBB complaint record is more mixed: its national profile shows 812 complaints over the past three years, including 56 categorized as customer-service complaints, although complaint counts alone don't establish the quality of typical customer interactions.
Where Petco can actually be the better value
Petco's membership ecosystem can make a substantial difference if you use its services. Its current dog/cat Premier program advertises discounts on nutrition and litter, grooming savings, monthly rewards, and benefits involving routine veterinary exams.
Have recurring food purchases → Chewy Autoship is particularly convenient
Need grooming, veterinary care, or frequent in-store purchases → Petco becomes much more compelling
Want the easiest return process → Chewy has a notably generous 365-day policy
Want to physically see products or get something immediately → Petco
Bottom line: If you're comparing the two primarily as online pet-supply retailers, I'd lean toward Chewy for the combination of convenience, recurring-order savings, shipping, and returns. If you're looking for a broader pet-care ecosystem that includes stores, grooming, and veterinary services, Petco offers capabilities Chewy doesn't.
If you tell me what kind of pet you have and roughly what you spend per month on food/supplies, I can compare the actual annual cost of Petco vs. Chewy for your situation.
When comparing Chewy and Petco , the better choice depends largely on whether you prefer the unmatched convenience and legendary support of an online-only retailer or the hands-on, immediate utility of a brick-and-mortar storefront.
Here is how they stack up across value and customer service:
Customer Service
Chewy (Winner for Support): Widely regarded as having some of the best customer service in retail. Their support team is available 24/7 via phone, chat, or email, and they are famous for no-hassle refunds (often letting you keep or donate the item if it didn't work out) and sending personalized handwritten sympathy cards or portraits when a pet passes away.
Petco: Service varies. While in-store employees are generally helpful and passionate, corporate customer service for online orders lacks the frictionless, empathetic reputation that Chewy has built. However, Petco does win points for face-to-face interactions regarding grooming, training, and vet clinics.
Petco (Winner for In-Store & Services Value): Petco’s Vital Care membership programs (split into Premier tiers for pet food, grooming, and veterinary care) offer solid ongoing value if you utilize their physical services. They also offer a robust "Buy Online, Pick Up In Store" (BOPIS) discount—often 10% to 20% off—if you need items immediately rather than waiting for delivery.[](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/chewy-vs-petco-pet-care-154800736.html)

Chewy currently advertises 5% off eligible Autoship items and 24/7 customer support. ChewyChewy Petco also gives 5% off Autoship, but its free-shipping threshold is generally $39, versus Chewy's commonly advertised $49 threshold. Petco Autoship purchases also earn Perks rewards.
Where each tends to make more sense
Choose Chewy if most of your purchases are food, treats, litter, medications, toys, or other supplies delivered to your home. Its online selection is particularly extensive, and its customer-support model is built around online/phone service. Independent comparisons also tend to find Chewy particularly strong on selection and customer-service experience, although customer reviews aren't a perfect measure.
Choose Petco if you value having a physical store nearby, want to combine shopping with grooming or veterinary services, or can make good use of Petco Perks. Petco's membership ecosystem can provide additional savings beyond basic Autoship.
For pure price, don't assume one always wins. Prices and promotions vary considerably by brand and product. A recent comparison similarly found that the cheaper option depends on the specific shopping basket rather than there being a universal winner.
Bottom line: For a pet owner who primarily shops online, Chewy has the more straightforward value proposition and customer-service experience. Petco becomes particularly compelling if you actually use its stores, grooming/vet services, and Perks rewards.
If you tell me what pet you have and what you buy regularly (e.g., Purina food + litter + flea meds), I can compare the actual recurring costs at both and show which is cheaper for your basket.
When deciding between Chewy and Petco , the choice generally comes down to digital convenience versus physical, in-person care. Both offer robust ecosystems for pet owners, but they excel in different areas.
Customer Service
Chewy is widely considered the gold standard for pet retail customer service. They are legendary for their empathetic, 24/7 support, hassle-free refunds (often without requiring you to return heavy bags of food if your pet dislikes it), and personalized touches like sending handwritten sympathy cards or flowers when a pet passes away.
Petco provides solid customer service, particularly through its brick-and-mortar staff, but its digital and phone support doesn't quite match the cult-like devotion inspired by Chewy's proactive care teams. However, Petco wins if you need a face-to-face conversation or immediate in-store assistance.
Chewy is a pure-play digital experience with an intuitive app, excellent pharmacy integration, and heavy boxes delivered directly to your doorstep—saving you from hauling 40-lb bags of kibble or cat litter.
Choose Chewy if you prioritize unmatched customer support, hassle-free doorstep delivery, and straightforward subscription savings on heavy or bulk items.
Petco wins if you place a high value on in-person services

In-person shopping

🏆 Petco
Its physical-store model gives it a major advantage for services; Petco also operates veterinary and grooming offerings.
Convenience
🏆 Chewy
Door-to-door delivery is hard to beat for heavy bags of food or litter.
Where the value difference really shows
For routine supplies, I'd lean Chewy. A recent price comparison found that Chewy is generally cheaper for recurring staples such as food, litter, and treats, while Petco can become more competitive when you use its in-store services.
Chewy's current Autoship program can also provide 5% off eligible recurring orders, and orders over $49 qualify for free shipping according to a recent 2026 comparison.
Petco's advantage is less about the lowest sticker price and more about the ecosystem: you can buy supplies and also use grooming, training, veterinary, and other services. That can make Petco the better total-value choice for someone who wants one local pet-care provider.
My recommendation
Choose Chewy if your priority is low ongoing cost + convenience + customer service.
Choose Petco if your priority is in-person service + grooming/vet/training + immediate purchases.
Best strategy for many owners: use Chewy for recurring essentials and Petco when you need a physical store or one of its services.
If you tell me dog vs. cat, approximate monthly spending, and whether you use grooming/vet services, I can also compare the two based on your specific situation and estimate which would save you more per year.
