What are the best services for booking private homes for holidays?

If you mean services for booking an entire private house, villa, cabin, or apartment for a vacation, these are the main ones I’d consider:

Service	Best suited for	What stands out
Airbnb	Broadest selection & unusual homes	Huge variety, from apartments and cabins to luxury villas; extensive filters and reviews.www.airbnb.com
Vrbo	Families & groups wanting a whole home	Focuses specifically on entire-home rentals rather than shared accommodation; has 2M+ properties across 190+ countries.admin.vrbo.com
Plum Guide	High-end, design-focused homes	Much more curated: Plum says it selects only a small fraction of homes and individually vets properties.www.plumguide.com
Booking.com	Comparing homes with hotels	Particularly convenient if you're already using Booking.com and want apartments, villas, or houses alongside hotels.
Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy	Luxury + hotel loyalty	Upscale private homes with the ability to earn/use Marriott Bonvoy points on eligible stays.

How I'd choose

• Maximum choice: Airbnb
• A proper private house for a family/group: Vrbo
• Beautiful, carefully vetted homes: Plum Guide
• Want to compare vacation homes and hotels in one search: Booking.com
• Luxury + Marriott ecosystem: Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy

One important distinction: Airbnb/Vrbo are marketplaces with lots of inventory, whereas Plum Guide is deliberately much more selective. Plum Guide currently says its collection contains 30,000+ curated homes in 40+ destinations, with homes screened against its quality standards.www.plumguide.com

If you tell me where you're going, approximate dates, number of people, and budget, I can also compare the actual homes available across these services.

When looking for the best services to book private holiday homes, the right choice depends on what kind of trip you are planning, your budget, and the level of service you expect.

The top booking platforms categorized by their strengths include:

1. The Global Market Leaders (Best Overall Selection)

• Airbnb : The undisputed giant for private accommodations. It features everything from a single spare room to massive luxury estates, treehouses, and villas worldwide. It's best for unique local character, wide global reach, and quirky stays.
• Vrbo : Short for "Vacation Rentals by Owner," Vrbo focuses strictly on entire, private homes (no shared spaces or couch-surfing options). It is generally preferred by families and larger groups looking for traditional beach houses, cabins, and suburban holiday properties.
• Booking.com : While famous for hotels, Booking.com has a massive inventory of standalone private apartments and holiday homes. It is great for flexible cancellation policies and Genius loyalty rewards.hostfully.com

2. Curated & Luxury Collections (Best for Vetted Quality)

• Plum Guide : Known as the "Michelin guide" of vacation rentals. They manually vet and test homes, accepting only the top 3% of homes in a given area based on strict criteria like interior design, Wi-Fi speed, and neighborhood quality. Perfect if you want to avoid the "is this place legit?" anxiety.
• Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy : A luxury home rental platform curated by professional property management companies. A major perk here is the ability to earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points on private home stays.

3. Price Comparison & Aggregators (Best for Finding Deals)

• HomeToGo : A massive meta-search engine that aggregates listings from thousands of different sites (including Airbnb, Vrbo, and regional booking agencies). It lets you compare prices across platforms for the exact same property so you don't overpay.hometogo.com+1

If you share your destination, number of guests , or budget range , I can recommend which specific platform will give you the best options for your trip.

If you mean private vacation homes rather than hotels, these are some of the main services worth considering:

• vrbo.com — Particularly good for entire houses, villas, cabins, and condos. Vrbo focuses on whole-home rentals rather than shared rooms, and has listings across 190+ countries.vrbo
• airbnb.com — Huge selection and often the easiest place to find everything from inexpensive houses to unusual properties. It's especially useful when you want lots of location and amenity choices.
• plumguide.com — More curated and luxury-oriented. Plum Guide says it accepts only a small percentage of homes after its vetting process, so it's useful if quality and design matter more than having the largest selection.Plum Guide+1
• homes-and-villas.marriott.com — Worth considering if you prefer professionally managed homes and want to earn/use Marriott Bonvoy benefits.
• vacasa.com — A large professionally managed vacation-rental company, particularly useful for U.S. beach, mountain, and resort destinations.

If you tell me where you're going, approximate dates, number of people, and budget per night, I can also compare actual private homes across these services and help you narrow them down.

The best service for booking private holiday homes depends entirely on your budget, travel style, and whether you want a casual beach cottage, a quirky treehouse, or a fully vetted luxury villa with concierge service.houfy.com+1

The Big Mainstream Platforms

• Airbnb (Airbnb ) is the dominant giant with the largest global inventory. It is best for sheer variety—ranging from budget apartments and suburban houses to unique stays like yurts, castles, and boats.hostfully.com
• Vrbo (Vrbo ) stands for Vacation Rentals by Owner and focuses exclusively on entire private properties (no shared spaces or single rooms). It is generally the go-to platform for family and large-group getaways, particularly for cabins, beach houses, and lake retreats.

Curated & High-End Alternatives

• Plum Guide (Plum Guide ) acts like the Michelin Guide for vacation rentals. They personally vet and inspect only the top tier of homes (rejecting the vast majority of submissions) to eliminate the risk of a place looking nothing like its photos.houfy.com
• Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy (Homes & Villas by Marriott ) features upscale and luxury whole-home rentals that are professionally managed. It is ideal if you want hotel-level cleanliness standards and the ability to earn or redeem Marriott Bonvoy loyalty points.houfy.com

• How many people are in your group?

When looking for the best services to book private homes for holidays, the right choice depends on your budget, desired level of luxury, and whether you want global variety or curated, high-end management.

Global & Mainstream Marketplaces

• Airbnb: The largest platform globally, offering everything from a cheap suburban room to massive multi-million dollar private beachfront architectural marvels. Excellent for sheer variety, global reach, and unfiltered user reviews.
• VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner): Part of the Expedia group, VRBO focuses exclusively on entire places rather than shared spaces. It tends to attract families and larger groups looking for traditional whole-home holiday rentals in major leisure destinations.

Vetted & Premium Boutique Agencies

• Onefinestay: Ideal if you want high-end urban or resort homes with hotel-quality hospitality, crisp linens, and 24/7 guest support. Every home is personally vetted for design and location.
• Luxury Retreats / Inspirato: Excellent choices if you are looking for ultra-luxury estates, fully staffed villas, and integrated concierge services to handle every detail of your vacation.
• Local Boutique Managers: For specific high-demand regions (like regional coastal spots or mountain towns), regional curators like Sanctuary Vacation Rentals in Carmel or regional specialists often provide cleaner, more reliable localized service and direct property knowledge than massive global listing sites.

To help narrow down the best platform for your trip, tell me:

• What destination or type of location (beach, mountain, major city) are you eyeing?
• What is your group size and vibe (family-friendly, romantic getaway, luxury party)?

If by “private homes” you mean an entire house, villa, cabin, or apartment rather than a hotel room, these are the main services I’d look at:

• vrbo.com — Particularly strong for whole-home rentals, family trips, and larger groups. Its inventory is focused on private properties rather than shared rooms.Forbes

• homes-and-villas.marriott.com — Worth checking for higher-end homes, particularly if Marriott Bonvoy benefits matter to you.Forbes
• hometogo.com — More of a comparison/search engine, aggregating vacation rentals from numerous sources. Handy for checking whether the same type of property is available elsewhere at a different price.Independent Travel Cats
• thetopvillas.com — Particularly relevant for large luxury villas and group holidays.Independent Travel Cats

Quick way to choose

For a typical holiday, I'd search Vrbo, Airbnb and Booking.com first, then check HomeToGo, rather than relying on one site. Prices, fees and cancellation terms can differ substantially between properties and platforms.Forbes+1

If you tell me where you're going, dates, number of people, and roughly what you want to spend per night, I can also compare the best private-home booking options for that specific trip.

If you mean booking an entire private house, villa, cabin, or apartment for a holiday, these are the strongest options:

• airbnb.com — Best overall for selection and variety. Excellent for everything from city apartments to villas, cabins, and unusual homes.
• vrbo.com — Particularly good for families and groups. It focuses heavily on whole-home vacation rentals, so it's often my first comparison with Airbnb.
• plumguide.com — Best for high-quality, stylish homes. Plum Guide says it curates its collection rather than simply accepting every listing, making it useful if quality matters more than having the biggest selection.Plum Guide Help Center+1
• homes-and-villas.marriott.com — Best for premium/luxury homes and Marriott Bonvoy members. Homes are professionally managed and evaluated, and members can earn/redeem Bonvoy points.Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy
• vacasa.com — Good for professionally managed vacation homes, especially in North America. Vacasa provides local support and manages cleaning and other aspects of the stay.Vacasa+1

My quick ranking

Tip: For an expensive holiday, I'd search Vrbo + Airbnb + Plum Guide rather than relying on just one. For a luxury trip, add Marriott Homes & Villas.

If you tell me where you're going, approximate dates, number of people, and budget, I can also recommend the best services/listings for that specific holiday.

When it comes to booking private holiday homes, the "best" service depends on what you're looking for—whether it's global variety, high-end luxury, or specialized regional support.

Major Global Platforms

• Airbnb : The undisputed giant for private residences, offering everything from spare rooms to massive luxury villas worldwide. It has the largest inventory, but it's wise to carefully read reviews and check host communication before booking.reddit.com+1
• VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) : Part of the Expedia Group, VRBO specializes strictly in entire-place private properties (no shared spaces or single rooms). It’s generally preferred by families and groups looking for traditional whole-home holiday rentals, particularly in North American and European vacation hotspots.
• Booking.com : While primarily known for hotels, Booking.com has heavily expanded its private apartment, villa, and holiday home sector. It features a straightforward interface and a robust Genius loyalty discount program, though you should still scrutinize property-specific reviews.reddit.com+1

Boutique and Luxury Alternatives

• Onefinestay : Ideal if you are looking for high-end, luxury private homes paired with hotel-quality service (like professional cleaning, 24/7 guest support, and tailored concierge services). They operate in major luxury travel destinations globally.
• Plum Guide : Known as the "Michelin guide of vacation rentals." They personally vet every single home on their platform using a rigorous 110-point quality test (checking things like water pressure, interior design standards, and neighborhood vibe) so you don't have to guess based on user reviews alone.
• Local/Regional Property Management Agencies : For specific destinations (like beach towns, ski resorts, or specific mountain ranges), booking directly through local boutique management companies often saves you money on third-party service fees and gives you much more responsive, on-the-ground support during your stay.

If you can tell me where you plan to go and who you're traveling with (family, group of friends, couple) , I can recommend the best specific platform or local approach for that destination.
