I want to learn basic magic tricks. Where are the best resources for a beginner?

Where to Find Resources:

• Libraries: The 793.8 section is packed with beginner books.
• Local Magic Shops: They often provide hands-on advice.
• Online Magic Shops: Vanishing Inc. and Theory11 offer beginner-friendly kits and downloads. Vanishing Inc.+2

Tips for Beginners:

• Focus on the Method: Don't be overwhelmed by the amount of tricks.
• Master One Trick: It's better to learn one trick well than five poorly.
• Performance Matters: Magic is about presentation, not just the secret.
• Join a Club: Look for local IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians) rings or SAM (Society of American Magicians) assemblies. Reddit +2

👉 Why books first? They go deeper into technique, presentation, and psychology—things quick tutorials usually skip.Source 1

🎥 2. Use YouTube—but selectively

Videos are great for seeing moves, but quality varies a lot.

Good beginner-friendly channels:

• MisMag822 (tons of beginner card tricks)Source 1

• EvanEraTV (fun, simple tricks for casual learning)Source 1

💡 Reality check:
Some experts warn that YouTube can lead to copying moves without understanding fundamentals, which slows long-term progress.Source 1

👉 Best approach:

• Learn the trick from a book

• Use YouTube to see the move in action

🌐 3. Free online tutorials & sites

If you want structured video learning:

• Magic tutorial sites (like Disturb Reality) offer step-by-step videos for beginners and beyond.Source 1

These are useful for:

• Visual learners

• Practicing specific tricks (card levitations, coin vanishes, etc.)

💬 4. Learn from communities (underrated but powerful)

Beginner magicians often improve fastest when they get advice from others.

From Reddit discussions:

“Learn three tricks really well instead of many poorly.”[Removed]

Common beginner advice:

• Start with cards or coins (simplest props)

• Practice in front of a mirror

• Focus on presentation, not just mechanics

🧠 5. What to focus on first (this matters more than resources)

Don’t try to learn everything at once. Start with:

• 2–3 self-working tricks (confidence boost)

• 1–2 basic sleights (like card control or false shuffle)

• Simple performance skills (eye contact, storytelling)

Magic isn’t just tricks—it’s performance.

🎯 Simple beginner plan (if you want structure)

1. Get one book (Joshua Jay or Mark Wilson)

2. Learn 3 tricks from it

3. Watch YouTube only for those tricks

4. Practice daily for 10–15 minutes

5. Perform for a friend within a week

If you want, I can suggest your first 3 tricks to learn (based on whether you prefer cards, coins, or everyday objects).

Many even say books beat YouTube because they include deeper detail and theory behind tricks, not just quick demos Recommended Magic Books for Beginners - Vanishing Inc. Magic shop.

👉 If you pick one: Mark Wilson’s Complete Course is often considered the best all-around beginner book.

🎥 2. YouTube (good—but use carefully)

YouTube can be helpful, especially when you want to see moves in action.

Good beginner-friendly channels:

• MisMag822 (great for card tricks)

• EvanEraTV (fun, simple tricks)

• 52Kards / Alex Pandrea (more serious card magic)

You’ll find:

• Easy card tricks

• Basic sleight-of-hand moves

• Practice drills

But here’s the catch:

• Many tutorials skip fundamentals or teach bad habits

• You may learn tricks without understanding performance

Even experienced magicians warn that YouTube alone can lead to shallow learning Stop Watching YouTube to Learn Magic Tricks (Read a Book Instead) – Magickits.com Magic Shop.

👉 Best approach: use YouTube to supplement , not replace structured learning.

🧠 3. Online courses & magic sites

If you want something more guided than YouTube:

• Magic shop websites (like Vanishing Inc., Penguin Magic)

• Beginner courses (often paid, but high quality)

These usually include:

• Structured lessons

• Professional instruction

• Practice routines

They’re basically the “middle ground” between books and videos.

💬 4. Communities (for feedback & ideas)

Learning magic alone is tough—feedback helps a lot.

• Reddit communities like r/Magic

• Magic forums and Discord groups

Example insight from Reddit:

“YouTube teaches tricks, not magic… books and structured learning are better.”Source 1

Communities help you:

• Get advice

• Fix mistakes

• Discover new tricks

🎯 5. What to start with (simple plan)

If you want a clear path:

1. Start with a beginner book (foundation)

2. Learn 3–5 simple tricks (cards or coins)

3. Use YouTube to see the moves

4. Practice performance (this is key!)

5. Get feedback (friends or online)

⚡ Final tip

Start with card tricks —they’re the easiest entry point and require minimal props. Many beginner resources focus on them for a reason 20 Best YouTube Channels To Learn Magic Tricks (with links)! – Improve Magic.

If you want, tell me what kind of magic interests you (cards, coins, mentalism, street magic), and I can give you a custom beginner roadmap with specific tricks to learn first.

Tips for Beginners

• Focus on Books: While video is great, books often force you to learn the mechanics and performance, not just copy the movements, as discussed on Reddit.
• Master a Few Tricks: It is better to perform three tricks well than ten tricks poorly.
• Practice Regularly: Rehearse your tricks until you can perform them smoothly without thinking about the mechanics.
• Start with Self-Working Tricks: Look for tricks that don't require complex sleight of hand to start, such as those by Karl Fulves.

If you learn better by watching:

These are good for immediate, visual learning—especially when you’re just getting comfortable with hand movements.

📺 YouTube (free but inconsistent quality)

YouTube is useful, but quality varies a lot. Good starting searches:

• “self-working card tricks beginner”

• “easy coin magic tutorial beginner”

• “top 10 beginner magic tricks”

Tip: prioritize channels that explain why a trick works, not just performance.

🧠 Beginner communities (very underrated)

• Reddit: r/Magic and r/cardmagic
Good for feedback, routine ideas, and avoiding bad beginner habits.

• Magic Café forum (large magic discussion community)
Great for learning what’s worth practicing long-term.

🎯 A simple way to start (what actually works)

If you want a clean starting path:

1. Learn 3–5 self-working card tricks (no sleight of hand yet)

2. Add 1 coin vanish + 1 simple palm technique

3. Practice presentation (story + timing) more than tricks

4. Perform for friends as soon as possible (this matters more than tutorials)

If you tell me your goal (card tricks, coin magic, mentalism, or “street magic style”), I can give you a tight 2–3 week beginner plan with specific tricks to learn in order.
