Proton Mail and Tuta share the lead for encrypted, ad-free email with no phone number requirements. When buyers ask for messaging apps that keep no server history, Briar is the usual answer.
Since July, Fastmailrising has become one of the three most named providers for email privacy without ad scanning, while GlobaLeaksrising is now named regularly for anonymous source sharing. At the same time, Signalfalling and Threemafalling have seen noticeable declines across the market.

If you want to step away from big tech ecosystems that profile your inbox, several reputable email providers explicitly guarantee no ads, no tracking, and zero content scanning for ad targeting.[](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mpUNp_dNaI)
The top privacy-focused email providers vary depending on whether you prefer strict end-to-end encryption or standard email compatibility:
Would you prefer an option that supports complete end-to-end encryption (like Proton or Tuta) or one that works smoothly with traditional email apps via IMAP/SMTP (like Fastmail or Mailbox.org)?
If your main concern is an email provider that doesn't read your messages to target you with ads, I'd start with Proton Mail or Tuta Mail. Both are built around privacy and encryption, and both explicitly state that your email data isn't used for targeted advertising.
Here are the strongest options I'd consider, based on their published privacy policies and security features.
Best privacy-focused email providers
1. Proton Mail
(Best all-around choice)
Proton says user data is never used for advertising, and it cannot access the contents of emails encrypted within its system. It also scans unencrypted incoming messages for spam and viruses, which is different from scanning for ad targeting.
Based in Switzerland.
End-to-end encryption for messages between Proton users.
Supports OpenPGP for compatibility with other encryption tools.
StartMail promises no ads, no email-activity tracking, and no selling of user data. It offers disposable aliases, encrypted email options, and support for standard email clients.
Fastmail says it doesn't use profiling for personalized ads. It offers features such as masked email addresses and protection against email-open tracking. However, it is not a zero-access encrypted mailbox like Proton or Tuta; the provider can process message content to deliver email and provide its services.
Maximum encryption of email content and subject lines
Tuta Mail
Disposable email aliases and privacy
StartMail
Conventional email workflow and third-party clients
Fastmail
My recommendation: Choose Proton Mail if you want a straightforward replacement for Gmail with strong privacy protections. Choose Tuta if preventing the provider from reading your stored messages is your top priority.
One important distinction: encryption within a provider doesn't automatically encrypt every email you send to someone using Gmail or Outlook. Also, spam filtering and protection against tracking pixels are separate from advertising-based email scanning.
Let me narrow it down
What matters most to you?
1. Budget
Free email account
Willing to pay for better privacy
Either is fine
2. What kind of privacy do you want?
Provider technically cannot read my stored emails
Primarily no ad targeting or profiling
Also block email-open tracking and tracking pixels
3. Do you need to use an existing email app, such as Apple Mail or Outlook?
If you want to step away from ecosystem giants that monetize your attention or scan content for profiling, several independent and privacy-focused email providers fit your criteria . Because these services do not run on advertising, they are entirely ad-free and rely on paid subscription models (or strict zero-access architectures) to respect your data.
Top options that prioritize privacy and keep your inbox free of ad-tracking algorithms:
Proton Mail — Based in Switzerland, Proton uses zero-access, end-to-end encryption, meaning even they cannot read your emails. It features an open-source framework, a generous free tier, and paid plans that bundle calendars, drive storage, and alias tools.[](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mpUNp_dNaI)
Tuta Mail — Formerly Tutanota, this German-based provider offers fully encrypted mailboxes (including subject lines, contact lists, and calendars) with zero tracking or ads. It relies on open-source quantum-resistant encryption and strict EU privacy laws.[](https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-email-encryption-services)
Fastmail — Based in Australia and entirely independent, Fastmail is a paid-only service [8.1] that offers a clean, fast [8.1], traditional email experience. They do not harvest data or track usage for advertising [8.1], and they support masked email aliases to protect your main address [8.1].
Mailbox.org — A privacy-first, ad-free [3.1] provider based in Germany [3.1] operating under strict GDPR and German data protection laws [3.1]. It is an eco-friendly, feature-rich suite (mail, calendar, office tools) built on open standards where your data belongs strictly to you.
Zoho Mail — A business-grade and personal email provider that explicitly promises an ad-free interface and does not scan your inbox contents or keywords for marketing or advertising purposes [6.1].
To help narrow down the best fit, let me know:
Do you prefer a free tier to start, or are you looking for a paid premium plan?
If you want an email account that keeps your communications private and doesn't scan your inbox to target you with ads, I'd start with a privacy-focused email provider rather than a free account built around an advertising business model.
The key distinction is that an email provider may process messages to deliver mail, block spam, and detect malware without using your message contents to personalize advertising. You'll also want to consider whether your messages are encrypted, what data the provider retains, and whether it can access your emails.
My top recommendations
1. Proton Mail
(Best overall)
A strong choice if you want a free email account, no advertising in your inbox, and encryption that prevents Proton from reading stored message contents. It also blocks email tracking pixels in its web app.
Best for: everyday personal email and stronger privacy.
Tuta : Headquartered in Germany, Tuta encrypts practically everything in your inbox—including email bodies, subjects, and contacts. They are funded entirely by subscriptions, feature open-source clients, and have zero technical capability to read your mail.[](https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-email-encryption-services)
Mailbox.org : A privacy-first, ad-free German provider built for security-conscious individuals and businesses. They use strict server-side encryption to ensure no automated system or third party can scan your inbox content, and they allow anonymous cash payments.[](https://privacytools.io/privacy-email)
Mailfence : Operating under strict Belgian privacy laws, Mailfence offers zero tracking, zero ads, and OpenPGP-based end-to-end encryption to ensure complete user sovereignty over data.
If you'd like to narrow down the best choice, let me know:
Do you prefer a free tier or are you willing to pay for a subscription?
Do you need features like a custom domain , calendar, or cloud storage?
If your priority is making sure your email provider doesn't scan your messages to build an advertising profile about you, I'd focus on privacy-first email services with explicit policies against advertising-based profiling, rather than simply choosing a provider that calls itself “secure.”
One important distinction: a provider can promise not to use your emails for advertising without being technically unable to access them. End-to-end encryption provides a stronger technical safeguard for message contents, although it doesn't necessarily protect every email you exchange with someone using a different provider.
My top recommendations
1. Tuta Mail
(Best fit for your requirement)
Tuta explicitly says it does not scan emails for advertising, track users, or send targeted ads. Its encryption covers message contents and subject lines, and its encrypted search runs locally on your device. It also offers a free plan.
Here are top secure email providers that prioritize anonymity and do not mandate a phone number for registration:
Tuta (formerly Tutanota) : Registration requires no phone number or personal verification. It features end-to-end quantum-safe encryption for your mailbox, strips IP addresses from emails, and allows anonymous premium upgrades via cryptocurrency like Monero or Bitcoin. Note: Signing up over Tor may trigger a 48-hour activation delay to prevent abuse. You can review the details on the Tuta Anonymous Email Guide.[](https://tuta.com/blog/anonymous-email)
ProtonMail : Based in Switzerland, it allows you to create an account with just a username and password without forcing a phone verification step (though a CAPTCHA or secondary verification might occasionally trigger under heavy abuse networks). It provides robust zero-access encryption. Check options directly at Proton Mail.
Disroot : A platform based in the Netherlands run collectively, offering free, privacy-oriented services including email without phone verification. It utilizes open-source software and adheres strongly to data minimization principles. Learn more at Disroot.[](https://blog.superhuman.com/create-email-without-phone-number/)
Atomic Mail : A privacy-focused email provider featuring seed-phrase account recovery instead of phone numbers or backup emails, instant setup, and zero data collection. Explore further on Atomic Mail.[](https://atomicmail.io/free-email-without-phone-number)
Would you like to know more about how to access these services via Tor/VPN for maximum anonymity, or do you need a comparison of free vs. paid storage limits?
If your priorities are strong email security, anonymity, and signing up without a phone number, I’d start with Tuta Mail or Proton Mail. Both offer free encrypted email accounts, but Tuta is the stronger first choice if minimizing the personal information you provide at signup is especially important.
Best secure email services for anonymity
1. Tuta Mail
(Best for anonymity)
Germany · Free plan available
Tuta says you can register without a phone number or other personal details. It encrypts your mailbox, calendar, and contacts, and does not log IP addresses by default. Its apps are open source.
Signup: No phone number required; CAPTCHA may appear.
A strong all-round option with end-to-end encryption for messages between Proton users, zero-access encryption for stored mail, and open-source apps.
Signup: A phone number is not always required. Proton may ask for a CAPTCHA, an email verification, or phone verification depending on the circumstances.
Whichever service you choose, these steps help reduce how easily the account can be linked to your identity:
Use a unique username that doesn't include your real name, birthday, or existing online handles.
Avoid linking personal recovery information if the provider allows it. Keep any recovery codes somewhere safe.
Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication (2FA).
Consider network privacy. A reputable VPN can hide your home IP address from the email provider; Tor can provide additional anonymity where supported.
Remember that encryption has limits. Email sent to ordinary, unencrypted email providers may not be end-to-end encrypted. The subject, sender, recipient, and timing of messages can also reveal information depending on the service.
My recommendation: Start with Tuta Mail if avoiding phone verification and minimizing personal information are your main goals. Choose Proton Mail if you prefer a broader ecosystem of privacy tools and can accept that signup verification requirements may vary.
One important distinction: no-phone signup is not the same as guaranteed anonymity. Your behavior, device, IP address, and the information you share in messages can still identify you.
An excellent alternative if encryption is your priority. Tuta says it doesn't track users or serve targeted ads, and it encrypts email subjects and stored mailbox data as well as message contents.
Best for: privacy-first email with minimal tracking.
A good option if you want a conventional email experience, powerful search and filters, and no ad-based business model. The main trade-off is that it does not provide end-to-end encryption for your mailbox.
Best for: convenience and privacy without advertising.
My recommendation is Proton Mail as the first service to try. If you want the provider to have as little ability as possible to read your stored emails, Proton and Tuta are the two I'd compare most closely.
One important caveat: no email service can guarantee complete privacy for every message. When you email someone using a conventional provider, the recipient's provider may still be able to read the message. Sender and recipient details may also remain visible even when message contents are encrypted.
One question: Do you need a completely free account, or would you pay a few dollars a month for stronger privacy and more features? That will help me narrow this down to the best fit.
Proton says it doesn't use your email contents for targeted advertising, and its zero-access encryption protects stored messages from being read by Proton. It also blocks email tracking pixels and offers a free plan.
Trade-off: Some metadata remains visible to the provider, and ordinary emails exchanged with non-encrypted external providers aren't necessarily end-to-end encrypted.
Comparison based on each provider's published documentation; these are provider claims, not an independent guarantee of future conduct.
What “guarantees” really means
No provider can promise absolute privacy under every circumstance. But you can choose one whose business model, published policies, and encryption design all support your requirement.
For your specific concern, I would start with Tuta Mail because its stated policy directly addresses no scanning for advertising, no tracking, and no targeted ads. Proton Mail is a close alternative if you value broader email-client compatibility and additional productivity tools.
One further precaution: if you exchange sensitive messages with people using Gmail or Outlook, the recipient's provider may still be able to process the messages on its side. For confidential communications, use end-to-end encryption with the recipient as well.
One question: Do you want a free email account, or are you willing to pay for stronger privacy features and a custom email address?
