Sync holds a clear lead for personal and business use with out-of-the-box zero-knowledge protection. Tresorit is the usual answer when buyers specifically require zero-knowledge encryption where administrators cannot view keys.
Top cloud storage providers operating on a strict zero-knowledge architecture include:
Proton Drive — Uses end-to-end and zero-access encryption automatically in the background. Files, folder structures, and metadata are encrypted on your device using keys derived from your password, meaning Proton cannot read your data or recover your files if you lose your credentials.[]()
Here are the top cloud storage providers that meet your exact requirements:
Note: Because these providers operate on a true zero-knowledge model, if you forget your password, the provider cannot reset it or recover your files . They will provide a recovery phrase or key upon signup that you must store safely. [](]()](]()]()
I am looking for a file syncing service that encrypts data before it leaves my device and doesn't let the provider see my encryption keys.
Filen — A completely open-source, zero-knowledge cloud storage provider. Everything is client-side encrypted, and because the source code is publicly verifiable, you don't have to rely purely on the company's marketing claims regarding their lack of key access.[](https://mdanassaif.medium.com/best-zero-knowledge-cloud-storage-in-2026-18fdadabaeed)
If you want true zero-knowledge cloud storage—meaning the provider encrypts files before upload (or in a way where only your device can decrypt them) and the company never has your encryption keys—look for these features:
Client-side encryption (encryption happens on your device)
No key escrow (the provider does not keep a copy of your keys)
End-to-end encryption
Recovery keys you control (because the provider cannot reset your password or recover your files)
Ideally: open-source clients or independent audits
Some providers worth considering:

My shortlist by use case
Best everyday personal replacement for Google Drive
Proton Drive — strong privacy reputation and a polished ecosystem.
Best for highly sensitive documents
Tresorit — designed around secure file sharing and business compliance.
Best if you want a simple, familiar cloud drive
Sync.com — similar workflow to mainstream cloud storage but privacy-focused.
Best for teams with large active files
LucidLink — built for collaborative workflows while keeping encryption keys under customer control.
A few cautions:
If you lose your password/recovery key with a true zero-knowledge service, the provider usually cannot restore access.
“Encrypted at rest” is not enough—many normal cloud providers encrypt data but still hold the keys.
Check whether file names and metadata are also encrypted; some services protect file contents but expose some metadata.
If you tell me your priority—lowest cost, maximum privacy, open source, self-hosting, business use, or easiest replacement for Dropbox—I can narrow this down.
You’re looking for zero-knowledge / end-to-end encrypted cloud storage: the provider encrypts files on your device, and the provider does not have your password or the decryption keys. If you lose the password/recovery key, the provider generally cannot reset access for you.
You're looking for a zero-knowledge, end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) file-syncing service. The key requirement is that files are encrypted on your device before upload, and the provider cannot access the decryption keys or read your files.
There are several good options, but it's important to distinguish genuine client-side encryption from services that merely encrypt data while it's traveling over the internet or sitting on their servers.
Services worth considering
1. Proton Drive
(Best overall starting point)
An encrypted cloud drive with automatic file syncing and desktop and mobile apps. Proton says it cannot decrypt your files, and its encryption also protects file and folder metadata.
Best for: Personal files, documents, photos, and everyday syncing.
Tresorit explicitly documents a zero-knowledge design: files are encrypted on your device, and the provider does not receive your usable encryption keys. It also supports two-way desktop folder syncing and controlled file sharing.
Best for: Confidential work documents, client files, and team collaboration.
Rather than being a cloud provider, Cryptomator encrypts files locally in a vault that you can store inside a supported cloud-sync folder. This lets you add client-side encryption to a service you already use. Check compatibility with your chosen sync client and operating system before relying on it.
Best for: People who want to keep control of their encryption passphrase while choosing their own cloud provider.
The comparisons above describe the services' stated security models; they aren't independent verification of every client, feature, or implementation.
My recommendation
I'd start by comparing Proton Drive and Tresorit. Both directly address your main requirement without making you assemble an encryption system yourself.
One important caveat: no cloud encryption protects files while they're open and decrypted on a compromised device. Also, keep your account recovery details safe; losing access to your encryption keys can mean losing access to your files.
You are looking for a zero-knowledge, client-side encrypted service (often called end-to-end encrypted or E2EE). With these platforms, your data is encrypted and decrypted locally on your device, meaning the provider only ever sees unreadable ciphertexts and cannot access your encryption keys or look at your files.[](https://www.dragbin.com/blog/zero-knowledge-cloud-storage/)
The top file syncing and storage services that meet this requirement include:
Tresorit : Built with a heavy enterprise-grade focus in Switzerland and Hungary, it offers automatic folder synchronization and client-side zero-knowledge encryption where keys never leave your devices.
The key is to find a service that meets both requirements:
Block-level sync: When you change a small part of a large file, only the changed blocks are uploaded, rather than the entire file.
No content scanning: The provider cannot inspect your files for their contents, ideally because files are encrypted on your device with keys the provider doesn't possess.
These requirements can conflict. End-to-end encryption can prevent a cloud provider from reading your files, but some privacy-focused services sacrifice block-level sync because of their encryption architecture.
Best options to consider
1. Dropbox + Cryptomator
My first option to investigate if you need both features. Dropbox is known for block-level synchronization; Cryptomator encrypts files locally before they enter the cloud, so Dropbox receives encrypted data instead of readable document contents. This can give you a practical combination of efficient sync and privacy, though you should test how your specific large files behave.
Trade-off: two applications, and Dropbox still sees some account and file-transfer metadata.
A better fit if privacy is the priority. Sync.com advertises end-to-end encryption designed to prevent the provider from reading your files. However, it does not offer block-level deduplication, so it does not satisfy both requirements.
A strong alternative for private storage. Proton says files are encrypted on your device and cannot be read by Proton. It splits large files into 4 MB chunks for encrypted transfer, but that is not proof of block-level delta sync—only changed blocks being uploaded after an edit.
Start by evaluating Dropbox with a Cryptomator vault, but verify that it transfers only changed blocks for the specific file types and applications you use. Dropbox documents delta sync, while Cryptomator encrypts file contents and names locally.
One important caveat: encryption alone does not guarantee efficient delta sync. If an application rewrites an entire large file, many or all encrypted blocks may change, increasing upload traffic.
One question to narrow this down: Do you need block-level sync mainly for large files that change slightly (such as virtual-machine disks, databases, or Outlook PST files), or for ordinary documents and photos? That distinction can change the best recommendation.
To perform block-level sync , a cloud provider's server or sync algorithm must inspect, compare, and index the internal chunk hashes or byte-segments of your files to figure out what changed. If the provider cannot read or look inside your files because they are encrypted client-side with a key they don't possess (zero-knowledge), they cannot mathematically calculate or perform block-level deduplication/syncing on those chunks.[](]()](]()]()
Sync.com
Yes, by default
Zero-knowledge design
Good general-purpose replacement for Google Drive/Dropbox-style use.
Tresorit
Yes
Zero-knowledge design
Popular for business and sensitive documents.
MEGA
Yes
Uses client-side encryption
Larger free tier than many privacy-focused competitors.
Filen
Yes
Zero-knowledge design
Open-source-oriented privacy option.
pCloud
Only with its Crypto feature
Depends on using Crypto mode
Be careful: ordinary pCloud storage is not the same as its encrypted vault feature.
My shortlist by use case:
Best everyday replacement for Dropbox/Google Drive: Sync.com or Proton Drive.
Best for business/sensitive files: Tresorit.
Best if you want a larger free allowance: MEGA.
Best if you want more technical transparency: Filen.
A few things to verify before choosing:
“Encrypted at rest” is not enough — many big cloud providers encrypt stored files but still hold the keys.
Confirm whether all files are encrypted client-side or only a special “vault” folder.
Turn on 2FA and store your recovery key/password in a password manager.
Remember that zero-knowledge encryption protects cloud contents, but not an already-compromised device where files are open.
If you tell me your priority (cheapest, most secure, open source, easiest like Dropbox, or best for family/business), I can narrow it down.
Proton Drive : Hailing from the team behind Proton Mail, it provides open-source, Swiss-based zero-knowledge encryption for file content, folder names, and metadata.
MEGA : Offers a generous free tier with client-side zero-knowledge encryption built into its sync apps across desktop and mobile.
NordLocker : Created by the makers of NordVPN, it utilizes local "lockers" to encrypt files on your device before syncing them to the cloud with a strict zero-knowledge architecture.
Cryptomator : If you already use a mainstream provider (like Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive) but don't trust them with your keys, Cryptomator acts as a middleman—encrypting a local virtual vault client-side before it syncs to your existing cloud storage.[](https://www.privacyon.com/blog/best-privacy-focused-cloud-storage-2026)
Proton Drive: Focuses heavily on open-source, zero-knowledge architecture with end-to-end encryption for files, though it uses traditional file sync/upload mechanisms rather than delta block-level sync.
pCloud: Supports efficient block-level data syncing (uploading only changed parts of a file). Standard pCloud storage does not encrypt data client-side by default. However, you can add pCloud Crypto , a paid add-on that creates a client-side, zero-knowledge encrypted folder on top of their infrastructure. Keep in mind that applying zero-knowledge encryption to specific folders restricts how block-level delta sync behaves on those specific secure compartments.[](https://cloudstorageinfo.org/tresorit-review)[[2](https://cloudstorageinfo.org/block-level-file-sync)](https://gizmodo.com/best-cloud-storage/pcloud-vs-sync)
Would you prefer to lean toward strict zero-knowledge privacy (and compromise on file-level syncing), or do you have a specific file size/workflow issue (like syncing large databases or disk images) that makes block-level sync mandatory?
