Personal Laptops and Chromebooks in AI answers

What I'd look for

For school + gaming, my target specs would be:

16GB RAM + 512GB/1TB SSD + RTX 4050 + Ryzen 5/Core i5 or better.

I wouldn't spend extra for an RTX 4060 unless the price difference is modest. Also, gaming laptops tend to be heavier and have shorter battery life than ordinary school laptops; the Lenovo LOQ, for example, is about 5.4 lb, and battery life/fan noise are recurring considerations in user feedback.Best Buy

One caution: the $598 HP Victus is a marketplace/Walmart listing, so I'd check who the seller is, the return window, and warranty before buying. For a child's everyday machine, those details can matter as much as the specs.

If you give me your maximum budget (e.g. $500, $700, $900), I can narrow this to a few current deals and check Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, Costco, and manufacturer outlets.

• AMD Ryzen 7 Value Laptops : Machines equipped with processors like the Ryzen 7 5700U or similar configurations offer plenty of muscle for heavy multitasking, research tabs, and light-to-moderate gaming. For example, you can find options like the Walmart AMD Ryzen 7 15.6" Laptop floating around the $529 mark.[1]
• NIMO 15.6" Gaming Laptops : Configurations featuring the AMD Ryzen 5 6600H with 16GB of DDR5 RAM provide a solid entry point for esports titles (like Minecraft, Roblox, or Fortnite) while easily chewing through standard school assignments. Check out availability on the Best Buy NIMO Ryzen 5 Gaming Laptop priced right around $499.[1]
• Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming / HP Victus Last-Gen Closeouts : Keep an eye out at major retailers for clearance deals on older HP Victus 15 or Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 units powered by RTX 2050 or RTX 3050 GPUs. They frequently drop into the $500–$600 range during promotional windows and offer dedicated graphics that far outperform standard integrated chips for gaming.

If you want to narrow this down, let me know:

• What is your strict maximum budget?
• What specific games does your kid play?
• Do you prefer a lighter weight for school commuting or is battery life more important?

If you want to narrow it down, let me know:

• What is your strict maximum budget (e.g.,$7 0 0,$1 0 0 0)?
• Are there any specific games you're hoping to play smoothly?

I can recommend a specific model and target GPU to look out for!

Why I'd pick it: Good performance without using the whole budget.

What matters most for middle school

• Memory: Aim for 8GB RAM. Avoid 4GB models if possible.
• Screen: 14 inches is a good balance of portability and workspace; 15.6 inches is better if it will mostly stay at home.
• Battery: Look for a laptop that can last through a school day.
• School compatibility: Confirm the school doesn't require Windows-specific applications or a particular device.
• Protection: Budget for a padded sleeve and consider accidental-damage coverage.

The ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 is my first choice if the school supports Chromebooks. The ASUS Vivobook is the safer pick if you want Windows.

One question before you buy: Does your child's school use Chromebooks, or does it require a Windows laptop? That can change which one is the best purchase.
