To help me narrow down the exact recommendation for you, tell me:
What make, model, and engine size (gas or diesel) is your vehicle?
Do you want an ultra-compact glove-box size or an all-in-one unit with a tire inflator?
My top recommendation for most drivers is the NOCO Boost Plus GB40. It strikes a good balance between portability, safety features, and starting power for everyday cars and SUVs. If you drive a truck, a large SUV, or a diesel, I'd consider a more powerful model instead.
Here are the three options I'd shortlist based on current product information and automotive reviews.
(Best overall)
NOCO Boost Plus GB40
$91.21
Sold by Walmart
1,000 peak amps; rated for gas engines up to 6.0L.
Spark-proof connections and reverse-polarity protection.
Compact, about 2.5 lb, for convenient trunk storage.
Main drawback: short cables and limited reserve capacity for repeated jumps.
GOOLOO GP4000, subject to your engine's requirements
A vehicle in harsh winter conditions
HULKMAN Alpha 85S
These are general recommendations; verify compatibility with your specific engine and battery. Peak-amp ratings alone don't guarantee better real-world starting performance.
One important tip: Keep the jump starter charged, follow its storage-temperature limits, and check its charge every few months. A portable unit with a dead internal battery won't help when your car won't start.
Let me narrow it down for you
What vehicle do you need it for? The make, model, and year are enough for me to recommend the best-sized jump starter without overspending.
If you want a portable jump starter that can get a dead car battery running without another vehicle, the most effective options combine high real-world starting power, reliable clamps, a strong battery, and safety protections.
For most drivers, I'd prioritize a dedicated lithium jump starter over a bulky battery pack with lots of extra features. The right model depends on whether you're starting a small sedan, a V6/V8 SUV or truck, or a diesel engine in cold weather.
The most important thing to know: a high advertised peak-amp rating doesn't automatically mean a booster will start your car more reliably. Clamp quality, power delivery, temperature, and the condition of your vehicle's battery all matter.
My top 5 portable jump starters
These picks are based on recent hands-on testing, starting performance, portability, and suitability for different vehicle sizes. Car and Driver tested units on vehicles with severely depleted batteries, while WIRED tested repeated starts on a six-cylinder engine.
1. Clore Jump-N-Carry JNC325
(Best overall)
2,000 peak amps · 2.6 lb
Car and Driver's top overall pick for 2026. It combines strong starting performance, 24-inch leads, and a straightforward two-button design. A good balance of power and portability for everyday drivers.
My pick for larger gasoline engines, big V8s, and compatible diesel vehicles. It successfully started the test vehicle using Boost mode, has large clamps that are easier to handle with gloves, and doubles as a USB-C power bank.
Trade-off: bulkier than compact emergency packs; its display can be hard to read in bright sunlight.
A popular choice for ordinary cars and smaller SUVs. It is compact, has spark-resistant and reverse-polarity protection, and is rated for gasoline engines up to 6.0L and diesel engines up to 3.0L.
Trade-off: less reserve power than larger packs; a severely drained battery took a substantial bite out of its charge during testing.
4,000 claimed peak amps · around $170 at the time of WIRED's review
WIRED's 2026 testing favorite for its mix of cranking power, price, and battery capacity. It reportedly completed 15 starts on a dead six-cylinder vehicle while retaining more than half its charge.
Trade-off: larger than the smallest glovebox-friendly boosters.
A traditional heavy-duty jump box with a 22Ah internal battery and long, thick cables. Worth considering for a garage, work truck, or someone who values a substantial power reserve over lightweight portability.
Trade-off: much heavier than lithium packs and needs regular recharging.

Which one should you actually buy?
For a normal sedan or crossover: NOCO GB40 is a sensible compact emergency booster.
For a larger SUV or V8 pickup: GOOLOO GT6000 offers more starting headroom.
For frequent use, multiple vehicles, or a garage: Clore JNC660 is a strong traditional option, provided you don't mind its weight.
For repeated jump starts on road trips: WOLFBOX 4000A is particularly compelling based on WIRED's testing.
One caveat: if you regularly drive in harsh Midwest winter temperatures, don't choose on peak amps alone. Keep the booster charged, follow its cold-weather operating limits, and size it for your actual engine. A jump starter also cannot fix a failed starter motor or a battery that has an internal physical failure.

If you tell me your vehicle's year, make, and model, I can narrow this down to the best two or three options for your engine and budget.
When looking for a reliable, top-rated portable battery jump starter, performance, safety protections (like spark-proof technology and reverse-polarity safeguards), and cold-weather reliability are key.[2]
The top-rated portable jump starters on the market feature standout options categorized by power, reliability, and multi-use capability:
NOCO Boost Series (e.g., GB40, GB70, and GBX155)
Why it's top-rated:NOCO is widely considered the gold standard for portable lithium jump boxes. Units like the compact NOCO Boost HD GB70 (2,000 Amps) or the heavy-duty Boost X GBX155 (4,250 Amps) feature ultra-safe, spark-proof designs and rapid-recovering lithium tech. They hold a charge remarkably well in freezing temperatures and double as dependable USB power banks.[2][3]
Hulkman Alpha Series (e.g., Alpha 85 / Alpha Max 2500A)
When it comes to keeping a jump box in your trunk, modern lithium-ion portable jump starters have completely replaced the heavy, bulky lead-acid bricks of the past. They are lightweight (often around 1 to 3 pounds), hold a charge for months, and double as phone chargers or emergency flashlights.
The top-performing and most reliable portable jump boxes on the market fit a few distinct needs:
NOCO Boost Plus (GB40) / Boost HD (GB70): The industry standard for safety and reliability. NOCO units feature robust UltraSafe technology with spark-proof connections and reverse-polarity protection , meaning you can't accidentally shock yourself or fry your car's computer if you hook up the clamps backward. The GB40 (1,000 amps) handles most standard cars and small SUVs, while the GB70 (2,000 amps) is great for larger V8 engines and diesel trucks . You can check options out via retailers like the NOCO Boost HD GB70 on Motorcycle Parts Store.
Clore Automotive Jump-N-Carry (JNC325 / JNC770R): Clore is legendary in professional automotive circles. Their newer compact lithium versions (like the JNC325 ) pack a massive punch for their size, delivering high start-assist amperage alongside heavy-duty build quality. If you prefer a traditional heavy-duty sealed lead-acid unit and have plenty of trunk space, the heavy-duty JNC770R is a powerhouse, though most everyday drivers prefer the lighter lithium packs.
HULKMAN Alpha Series (Alpha 85 / Alpha Max): Known for extreme weather performance, featuring low-temperature start technology that works reliably even in freezing sub-zero environments (down to -40°F). They also feature large, clear digital status screens so you always know your exact battery percentage.
Weego (e.g., Weego 44s): Highlighted by Wirecutter as a top roadside emergency pick, Weego packs are weather-, water-, and dirt-resistant (IP65 rated), making them exceptionally rugged for trunk storage where temperature swings and rough conditions happen.
Engine Size Match: Check your engine displacement (liters) against the jump box's rating. A standard 1,000A–1,500A pack is fine for 4-cylinder and standard 6-cylinder cars, but get 2,000A+ if you drive a large truck or a heavy-displacement V8.
Trunk Temperature Maintenance: Lithium-ion batteries degrade or discharge faster in extreme heat or bitter cold. Set a calendar reminder every 3 to 6 months to check the charge level on your jump box and top it off via USB-C.
What kind of vehicle and engine size (gas or diesel) are you buying for, and do you prefer something ultra-compact or something with extra features like a built-in air compressor?
For a portable car jump box to keep in your trunk, I'd prioritize reliable starting power, safety protections, and the ability to hold a charge for months. You want something you can pull out on a cold morning, connect in a minute, and use without needing another car.
My general recommendation is a lithium-ion jump starter with built-in reverse-polarity protection, spark protection, and enough peak current for your engine. You don't need to spend extra on an oversized unit unless you drive a large truck or diesel.
My top portable jump-box picks
(Best for most cars)
NOCO Boost Plus GB40
$91
1000 peak amps · Compact lithium pack
A strong all-around choice for everyday cars and many small-to-medium pickups. It has spark-proof connections, reverse-polarity protection, and a compact design.
A powerful alternative with a USB-C charging feature and a claimed capacity for gasoline engines and diesel engines up to 10 liters. More than enough on paper for most ordinary cars.
Three things to know before putting one in your trunk
Check the temperature rating. A parked car can get much hotter than the outside air. Check the manufacturer's storage-temperature limits, and don't leave a lithium jump pack in a hot trunk if its manual prohibits it.
Keep it charged. Check the charge indicator every month or two and recharge as needed.
Follow the vehicle's jump-start instructions. Connect the clamps to the designated terminals or grounding point, and never try to jump a frozen, damaged, or swollen battery.
Let me narrow it down to the best one for your car
I looked at current tested recommendations and available models. For a car emergency kit, I’d prioritize: reliability, auto shutoff, accurate digital gauge, enough airflow for your tire size, and a power source you’ll actually have available. A compressor won’t fix a blown tire, but it’s excellent for slow leaks and low-pressure situations.
Best portable air compressors for keeping in your car
When choosing a portable air compressor for roadside emergencies, you generally have to decide between cordless rechargeable battery-powered units (which are super convenient but need to be charged periodically) and 12V corded units that plug directly into your car's socket or battery (which never run out of juice as long as your car works).
The top portable car air compressors categorized by how they handle emergencies include:
Best Overall Cordless / Heavy-Duty:ETENWOLF Vortex S6
Packed with a massive 19,200 mAh battery, this heavy-duty cordless inflator can top off multiple truck or SUV tires on a single charge. It features auto-shutoff precision (± 1 PSI), a 100% duty cycle, and doubles as a power bank for your phone during a stranded situation.[1]
Best Multi-Function Emergency Unit:WolfBox 4-in-1 Jump Starter with Air Compressor
If you want an all-in-one emergency box, this unit combines a 24,000 mAh battery jump-starter (4000A peak current) with a high-performance 160 PSI air compressor. It’s bulkier than a standalone pump, but it solves both dead batteries and low tires in a single trunk-friendly package.[1]
Best Corded 12V Heavy-Duty Pick:AstroAI Heavy-Duty Air Compressor (T4)
Plugging straight into a 12V source using alligator clips, this unit delivers a strong 1.97 CFM airflow and runs continuously for up to 25 minutes. Because it doesn't rely on an internal lithium battery, you never have to worry about the device's battery degrading or being uncharged when left sitting in a freezing trunk for months.[1]

Clore Automotive Jump-N-Carry Series (e.g., JNC325 or JNC770R)
Why it's top-rated: Long favored by professional mechanics and roadside assistance, Jump-N-Carry offers incredible starting muscle. While traditional heavy-duty models are larger, their newer lithium iterations (like the JNC325 ) deliver tremendous start-assist power, long cables for awkward battery placements, and robust build quality that stands up to heavy use.
TOPDON JumpSurge Series (e.g., JS3000)
Why it's top-rated: TOPDON provides heavy-duty cranking power (up to 3,000 peak amps) at a competitive price point . The JS3000 features bi-directional 45W USB-C power delivery (meaning it can fast-charge laptops as well as charge itself quickly), heavy-duty clamps, and 10 layers of smart safety protections including "Stop Spark" sensors.[1]
Weego Series (e.g., Weego 44s)
Why it's top-rated: Frequently highlighted by expert testers like The New York Times Wirecutter for years, Weego focuses on ultra-reliable, compact, and mistake-proof design. The Weego 44s is small enough to fit easily into a glove box or center console while packing enough punch for mid-size engines, complete with distinct audio-visual warnings for incorrect hookups.
If you share what kind of vehicle you drive (compact car, heavy-duty diesel truck, boat, RV) and whether you want extra features like a built-in air compressor or fast laptop charging, I can narrow down the exact model that fits your needs.
Best Budget / Lightweight 12V Option:Viair 84P
Recommended by The New York Times Wirecutter , the Viair 84P plugs right into a standard 12V cigarette lighter port . It is compact, highly reliable, straightforward to operate, and built specifically for standard passenger vehicle tires up to moderate sizes.
