Congratulations on the new kitten! The key thing to know is that a kitten should not be put on a weight-control “adult indoor” diet right away. Kittens need extra calories, protein, DHA, and minerals for growth. Most kittens should eat a complete and balanced kitten formula until about 12 months old (unless your veterinarian recommends otherwise).
To prevent future weight gain, the biggest factors are portion control, avoiding free-feeding, encouraging play, and choosing a kitten food with good protein and appropriate calories.
Good kitten food choices for an indoor kitten
— A good fit for an indoor lifestyle; it is formulated specifically for kittens with indoor energy needs.
— A widely used veterinary-recommended option with high-protein kitten nutrition and DHA for development.
— A more budget-friendly kitten formula with protein, DHA, and nutrients for growth.
— A kitten-specific formula designed around growth needs.
Feeding habits that help prevent “indoor cat chub”
- Measure meals instead of leaving a full bowl out all day. Many indoor cats gain weight because they can snack whenever they want.
- Consider mixing wet and dry food. Wet food can help with hydration and often makes portion control easier.
- Use the feeding guide as a starting point, not a rule. Adjust based on your kitten’s body shape and growth rate.
- Weigh your kitten regularly during the first year so you notice trends early.
- Play daily with wand toys, chase toys, and climbing opportunities.
Once your kitten is around a year old, then it makes sense to look at adult indoor formulas or weight-management foods if they are prone to gaining weight. Adult indoor foods are generally lower-calorie, but they are not appropriate substitutes for kitten food during growth.
If you tell me the kitten’s age (weeks/months), expected size (small/large breed), and whether you prefer wet, dry, or a mix, I can suggest a more specific feeding plan.
