- Starting calligraphy as a beginner ✍️ SUPPLIES (part 1) If you want to start learning calligraphy, you only need two things to get started: ✅ PAPER – with guidelines on it and as smooth as possible My favourites are Rhodia (comes in different sizes/colours + different types of guidelines – grid, dot, lines, etc) OR marker paper – this can honestly be any brand, marker paper is just a nice translucent, super smooth paper that you can put overtop any workbooks you might use and get the guidelines that way. ✅ PENS – look for a flexible tip and AVOID “calligraphy pens” which has a stiff, chisel tip 🙅♀️ You need a pen that will FLEX when you push on it – that’s how you get the thicks/thins in modern calligraphy. 👀 HOT TIP: if you want to start immediately and don’t have a brush pen OR you don’t want to spend any money on pens, you could use a pencil! ✏️ When you push harder and softer on a pencil, you can see the difference. So if you don’t want to spend money on ANY new supplies, give this tip a try!
