When it comes to professional zookeeping, aquarium management, and conservation record-keeping, the industry is anchored by two titan platforms. The "best" choice depends on whether your focus is global standardized pedigree/medical sharing or granular, day-to-day operational husbandry and behavioral tracking.

The two gold standards used across modern zoological facilities are:

• ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System by Species360)
  • Best For: Global database integration, pedigree tracking, and veterinary records.
  • Overview: ZIMS is the undisputed global standard used by over 1,200 institutions in nearly 100 countries. It is divided into core modules like ZIMS for Husbandry (daily logs, feeding, environment) and ZIMS for Medical (vet notes, lab results integrated with diagnostic tools like IDEXX).
  • Why it shines: If an animal is transferred between international zoos, its entire lineage, reproductive history, and medical profile move seamlessly with it. It's heavily backed by major bodies like WAZA and AZA.

• Tracks Software
  • Best For: Day-to-day operational tracking, training logs, enrichment, and animal welfare indexing.
  • Overview: Developed jointly by major zoological institutions (like the Denver Zoo and National Aquarium), Tracks is intensely practical for front-line zookeepers. It features specialized, highly granular modules for tracking animal training sessions, behavioral enrichment, welfare assessments, water quality, and ambassador animal programs.
  • Why it shines: Zookeepers often praise Tracks for its user-friendly interface and mobile app (Pocket Tracks) that make logging observations right at the enclosure fast and intuitive. (Many facilities that use ZIMS for global/vet data actually use Tracks or its companion tool ZooMonitor specifically for behavioral and welfare monitoring).

Breakdown of Top Options

• Species360 ZIMS : Universally used by WAZA- and AZA-accredited zoos. It connects global collections, making it vital for managing international studbooks, life-history data, medical treatments, and general daily husbandry. Its primary drawback is a legacy interface that can feel dated and less mobile-friendly.facebook.com [species360.org](https://www.facebook.com/groups/457674185029274/posts/2237130240416984/)[[2](https://www.facebook.com/groups/457674185029274/posts/2237130240416984)](https://species360.org/zims-for-husbandry/)[[3](https://trackssoftware.com/)](https://species360.org/zims-for-husbandry/)
• Tracks Software : A robust alternative to ZIMS used widely by progressive aquariums and zoos. It excels in operational workflows like tracking animal training milestones, behavioral enrichment schedules, and environmental water quality. []()

If you can share the size of your facility (small sanctuary vs. AZA-accredited zoo) and your primary goal (global compliance/pedigree vs. daily behavioral monitoring), I can recommend the exact system that fits your workflow.

The best record-keeping software depends on whether your focus is global institutional compliance, daily husbandry workflows, or granular behavioral research , with Species360 ZIMS, Tracks, Animal Care Software , and ZooMonitor serving as the top industry standards.

Zookeepers and registrars generally do not rely on a single application for everything; instead, they pair an overarching institutional database with specialized daily logs or behavioral tracking modules.facebook.com [facebook.com](https://www.facebook.com/groups/457674185029274/posts/2237130240416984/)

Top Zoological Record-Keeping Systems

• Species360 ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System) : The global gold standard and mandatory database for WAZA-affiliated and major accredited institutions. It handles global studbooks, life-history tracking, medical data, and population analytics across facilities, though users note its interface can feel dated and clunky for fast-paced mobile daily notes.facebook.com [facebook.com](https://www.facebook.com/groups/457674185029274/posts/2237130240416984/)
• Tracks Software : A robust alternative used by many zoos and aquariums for comprehensive animal management. It features dedicated modules for daily inventory, animal welfare tracking, enrichment, training logs, nutrition, and water quality.trackssoftware.com [facebook.com](https://trackssoftware.com/)
• Animal Care Software (ACS) : A modern, user-friendly platform tailored specifically for day-to-day zookeeper operations, shift handoffs, and routine husbandry tracking. It is widely praised for being more intuitive than legacy systems, though it lacks the massive global research database of ZIMS.facebook.com [facebook.com](https://www.facebook.com/groups/457674185029274/posts/2237130240416984/)

It runs seamlessly on tablets right at the habitat exhibit and allows easy data export for behavioral research.zoomonitor.org [facebook.com](https://zoomonitor.org/)

Feature Comparison

Are you looking for software for an accredited institutional zoo , a smaller sanctuary , or specifically for academic behavioral research ? Let me know and I can narrow down the best fit and implementation details.

Best overall:species360.org

For a professional zookeeper or zoo animal-care department, I’d choose ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System). It is purpose-built for zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, and wildlife facilities and is used by more than 1,400 institutions worldwide.Species360+1

It covers the things you’re most likely to need in one animal record:

• Health: exams, diagnoses, treatments, medications, vaccinations, lab results, weight and growth.
• Behavior: behavioral observations and welfare assessments.
• Husbandry: feeding, diets, enrichment, routines and environmental observations.
• Lifetime history: identification, transfers, reproduction, lineage and population information.
• Veterinary records: ZIMS for Medical adds detailed clinical records, anesthesia, pathology, samples and diagnostic results.Species360
• Team continuity: keepers, veterinarians and managers can work from the same centralized record rather than separate notebooks or spreadsheets.Species360

If behavior is your main priority

I'd look at ZooMonitor as a specialized behavior/welfare tool alongside ZIMS. If you're doing formal ethograms, focal sampling, behavioral research, or detailed welfare studies, a dedicated behavior platform can be better than relying solely on a general animal-record database.

Other options worth considering

Software	Best for
ZIMS	⭐ Best overall for a zoo/institution
ZooMonitor	⭐ Detailed behavior & welfare observation
Tracks Software	Keeper-focused daily husbandry, training and mobile observations
OERCA	Broad animal/wildlife management with customizable workflows

For example, Tracks supports mobile observations, health records, feeding, training, enrichment and animal measurements, while OERCA offers animal monitoring, breeding and medical records. Software Advice Capterra Antz is another newer platform explicitly designed to combine observations, husbandry, medical, diet, transfers and compliance in a unified animal record.Antz Systems

My short recommendation: If this is for an actual zoo rather than a personal collection, start with ZIMS. If your particular job is heavily focused on behavioral observation, consider ZIMS + a dedicated behavior tool rather than trying to make one system do everything.

If you tell me whether you're at a large accredited zoo, small zoo, sanctuary, or working with a few animals privately, I can narrow this down to the best 2–3 choices, including cost and mobile usability.
