What's the best document scanner app?

If you mean a phone app for scanning paper documents into PDFs, my top pick right now is Adobe Scan.

🏆 Best overall: Adobe Scan

Adobe Scan is the best balance of scan quality, OCR, ease of use, and PDF features. It automatically detects document edges, corrects perspective, removes glare/shadows, and uses OCR to make scans searchable/editable.www.adobe.com

🥈 Best for privacy/offline use: Genius Scan

What I'd choose

One important update: Microsoft Lens is no longer a good recommendation. Microsoft retired Lens in 2026 and recommends OneDrive's built-in scanner instead.support.microsoft.com

My recommendation: Start with Adobe Scan. If you don't want your documents tied to Adobe's ecosystem/cloud, choose Genius Scan instead.

If you mean a phone app for scanning documents into PDFs, the best choice depends on what you need:

App	Best for	Why it stands out
Adobe Adobe Scan	Most people	Excellent automatic edge detection, cleanup, OCR (searchable text), and PDF creation. Good if you use Adobe Acrobat.www.itechguides.com+2
Genius Scan	Privacy-focused scanning	Clean interface, strong document workflow, and a scanner-first approach rather than a large cloud ecosystem.scannerdoc.com
SwiftScan	Power users	More advanced features, integrations, and automation options.www.itechguides.com+2
Google Drive (built-in scanner)	Quick free scans	Convenient if you already organize files in Google Drive.www.itechguides.com
Microsoft OneDrive scanner	Microsoft 365 users	Fits well with OneDrive/Office workflows.www.itechguides.com

My pick by scenario:

• 📄 Occasional scans (receipts, forms, homework): Adobe Scan or Google Drive
• 🔍 Need searchable PDFs/OCR: Adobe Scan
• 🔒 Prefer keeping documents under your control: Genius Scan
• 🏢 Work documents every day: Adobe Scan or SwiftScan
• 📚 Books and multi-page documents: Genius Scan or a book-focused scanner app like vFlat Scanwww.itechguides.com

One more note: if you were considering Microsoft Lens, check its current availability on your device; Microsoft has moved users toward OneDrive scanning workflows.www.itechguides.com

For most people, I’d start with Adobe Scan because it gives the best balance of scan quality, OCR, and ease of use.www.itechguides.com
