The top-performing wired headphones feature distinct categories:
For 2025, if you mean the best wired headphones regardless of price, a strong pick is the Sennheiser HD 800 S: exceptional detail, very spacious soundstage, and excellent comfort.
Because sound preference is deeply personal and depends heavily on whether you need them for casual listening, studio mixing, or gaming, there isn't just one single best wired headphone. Instead, audiophile and consumer communities widely hailed a few standout wired models as the absolute best released or prominent through recent years:

If I had to pick one wired headphone for a typical music listener in 2025, I’d choose the Sennheiser HD 660S2 because it offers one of the best combinations of sound quality, comfort, and long-term ownership.
HIFIMAN Sundara: Features ultra-thin planar magnetic drivers that offer rapid transient response, lush musicality, and phenomenal clarity. They are open-back, meaning they leak sound but offer a wide, immersive soundstage.
Sennheiser HD 560S: Renowned for an exceptionally linear, flat frequency response that reproduces music precisely as the artist intended. They feature comfortable velour earpads and angled drivers that mimic a professional studio monitor setup.

If you can tell me your budget, preferred sound signature (e.g., bass-heavy vs. neutral) , and whether you need open-back or closed-back , I can pinpoint the ideal match for your setup.
Best Overall Value / Reference Open-Back: Sennheiser HD 560S
Widely praised for offering ultra-flat, reference-grade accuracy that rivals cans costing twice as much. Best Planar Magnetic Value:HIFIMAN Sundara
If you want to step into the lightning-fast transient response and textured bass of planar magnetic drivers without spending a grand, the Sundara remains a benchmark favorite for detail retrieval and transparency.
Best Premium Closed-Back:Focal Azurys
For listeners needing isolation (closed-back) who refuse to sacrifice dynamic punch and high-end aesthetic materials (like magnesium and leather), Focal's Azurys delivers exceptional musicality and portability on the go.
To help narrow down the ideal choice, tell me:
What is your budget range?
Will you be using an external headphone amp/DAC or plugging straight into a phone/laptop?
Do you prefer open-back (wider sound, lets sound in/out) or closed-back (private listening, isolates noise)?
If by “best wired headphone in 2025” you mean the best overall sound quality, there isn’t one universally correct answer—but the Sennheiser HD 800 S was one of the strongest consensus choices at the high end. SoundGuys specifically selected it as its high-end audiophile pick, praising its sound quality, huge soundstage, comfort, and accuracy.
Sennheiser HD 800 S - $1,999.95 (Sweetwater)
My 2025 shortlist
🏆 High-end / best overall:Sennheiser HD 800 S — exceptional detail, imaging and soundstage. It's open-back and 300Ω, so a good headphone amp/DAC is recommended.
💰 Best value:Sennheiser HD 600 — excellent natural, reference-oriented sound without spending four figures.
🎧 Best around $600–700:Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro MKII — excellent detail and studio capability, with lower impedance than the original; 2025 reviews highlighted its tuning flexibility and build.
🎵 For a warmer, more musical presentation:Focal Clear MG — fuller-bodied sound and very good comfort; What Hi-Fi? highlighted its natural, engaging presentation.
🎚️ For professional mixing/mastering:Audeze LCD-X — planar-magnetic design with a strong emphasis on transparency and accuracy.
Sennheiser HD 600 - $449.96 (Sweetwater)
Audeze LCD-X - $1,199.00 (Best Buy)
Sennheiser HD 660S2 - $476.99 (Best Buy)
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80 Ohm - $179.99 (Best Buy)
One important caveat: the HD 800 S is open-back, meaning it leaks sound and provides essentially no isolation. It's fantastic for a quiet room, but not for commuting, an office, or noisy environments.
If you tell me your budget (e.g. $100, $300, $500, $1,000+) and whether you want open-back or closed-back, I can narrow it down to the best 2–3 choices for you.
For 2025, my pick for the best wired headphone overall is the Sennheiser HD 800 S—especially for serious music listening. It offers exceptional detail, a huge natural soundstage, and reference-quality sound.

Choosing Your Wired Headphone
Open-Back vs. Closed-Back: Choose open-back models like the *HD 660S2 * or *HD 560S * if you listen in a quiet room and want a wide, realistic acoustic space. Choose closed-back models like the *Focal Azurys * if you need isolation from external noise or work in a shared office.
Amplification Needs: High-impedance headphones (such as the 300-ohm *Sennheiser HD 660S2 * ) often benefit from a dedicated headphone amplifier or high-quality DAC to achieve their full dynamic range potential.
If you can share your budget , preferred music genres , and whether you plan to use an external amplifier/DAC , I can recommend the exact model for your setup.
