What are the essential Excel add-ins and shortcuts every…

If you’re working in investment banking, the goal is less “know every Excel feature” and more build, audit, and modify models quickly without touching the mouse.

1. Add-ins & tools worth knowing

Tool	Priority	What bankers use it for
Power Query	⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐	Importing, cleaning, combining and refreshing large datasets
Power Pivot / Data Model	⭐⭐⭐⭐	Large datasets, relationships, PivotTables and financial analysis
Analysis ToolPak	⭐⭐	Regression, statistical analysis and other quantitative work
Solver	⭐⭐⭐	Optimization, capital structure / transaction scenarios and sensitivity-type problems
VBA / Macros	⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐	Automating repetitive banking workflows
Office Scripts	⭐⭐	Automation, particularly in Microsoft 365/web environments
Copilot in Excel	⭐⭐	Formula assistance, analysis and data manipulation—useful, but not a substitute for understanding the model

One important distinction: Power Query is no longer something you generally install as a separate add-in. It is integrated into modern Excel's Data → Get & Transform experience. Microsoft describes it as the primary Excel experience for importing and shaping data.

Similarly, the Analysis ToolPak is a genuine Excel add-in that can be enabled through Excel's Add-ins settings.

What I'd prioritize as a banker

Must know:

Power Query
VBA/macros
PivotTables
Data Tables
Solver
Named ranges
Tables / structured references
Power Pivot if you regularly handle large datasets

Nice to know:

Analysis ToolPak
Office Scripts
Copilot

2. The essential investment-banking shortcuts

Assuming Excel for Windows, these are the ones I'd drill until they're muscle memory.

Navigation

Shortcut	Action
`Ctrl + Arrow`	Jump to edge of data
`Ctrl + Shift + Arrow`	Select to edge of data
`Ctrl + Home`	Go to A1
`Ctrl + End`	Go to last used cell
`Ctrl + G`	Go To

Ctrl + G is particularly useful when you're jumping around a 50-sheet model. Microsoft documents it as Excel's Go To shortcut.

Editing & formulas

Shortcut	Action
`F2`	Edit cell
`Esc`	Cancel
`Enter`	Accept formula/input
`Ctrl + Enter`	Fill selected cells with entry
`Alt + =`	AutoSum

F4 is critical.

For example:

=A1*B1

Press F4 while on a reference and Excel cycles through:

$A$1
A$1
$A1
A1

You'll use this constantly when building models.

3. The banking-specific shortcuts

These are arguably more valuable than generic Excel shortcuts.

Paste Special

Ctrl + Alt + V

Then:

V → Values
F → Formulas
T → Formats
E → Transpose
D → Divide
M → Multiply

Paste Special → Values is one of the most frequently used operations in financial modeling.

Insert/delete rows and columns

Ctrl + +
Ctrl + -

Depending on your keyboard, you may need the number-pad +/-.

Hide/unhide

Ctrl + 9 Hide rows
Ctrl + 0 Hide columns

Microsoft confirms these shortcuts for Excel.

Formatting

Ctrl + 1 Format Cells
Ctrl + B Bold
Ctrl + I Italic
Ctrl + U Underline

Ctrl + 1 is the big one for bankers.

You'll constantly use it for:

Number formats
Percentages
Dates
Currency
Borders
Alignment
Font
Protection

4. Formula auditing shortcuts

These become extremely important when you're reviewing someone else's model.

Shortcut	Use
`F2`	See formula and precedents
`Ctrl + [`	Jump to precedent cells
`Ctrl + ]`	Jump to dependent cells
`Ctrl + Shift + ~`	Show formulas / formula-related formatting depending on Excel context
`F9`	Calculate selected formula component

F2 + Ctrl+[ / Ctrl+] is an excellent combination for tracing a model quickly.

5. Financial-modeling formulas you should know cold

Shortcuts are only half the battle. A good banker should be extremely comfortable with:

Core

SUM
AVERAGE
MIN
MAX
COUNT
ROUND
ABS

Logic

IF
IFS
AND
OR
IFERROR

Lookups

XLOOKUP
INDEX
MATCH
XMATCH

I'd particularly learn XLOOKUP + INDEX/MATCH.

You will encounter older banking models using INDEX/MATCH for years, even though XLOOKUP is now extremely convenient.

Conditional aggregation

SUMIF
SUMIFS
COUNTIF
COUNTIFS
AVERAGEIF
AVERAGEIFS

Dates

YEAR
MONTH
DAY
EOMONTH
EDATE
YEARFRAC
NETWORKDAYS

These are essential for debt schedules, operating models, transaction models and valuation work.

Modern Excel

FILTER
SORT
UNIQUE
LET
CHOOSECOLS
TAKE
DROP

These can dramatically simplify newer models and analysis.

6. The shortcuts I'd memorize first

If you only have time to memorize 20, make them these:

F2 Edit cell
F4 Toggle absolute references
Ctrl + Arrow Navigate data
Ctrl + Shift + Arrow Select data
Ctrl + D Fill down
Ctrl + R Fill right
Ctrl + 1 Format Cells
Ctrl + Alt + V Paste Special
Ctrl + G Go To
Ctrl + Page Up/Down Switch sheets
Ctrl + + Insert
Ctrl + - Delete
Ctrl + 9 Hide rows
Ctrl + 0 Hide columns
Alt + = AutoSum
Ctrl + S Save
Ctrl + Z Undo
Ctrl + Y Redo
Ctrl + [ Go to precedents
Ctrl + ] Go to dependents

Microsoft maintains the full current shortcut reference, including Windows and Mac variations.

7. Investment-banking Excel "muscle memory"

The real progression is:

Level 1 — Keyboard proficiency

Stop reaching for the mouse. Level 2 — Formula proficiency

Build formulas quickly and understand references. Level 3 — Modeling proficiency

Three-statement models, DCFs, LBOs, merger models, debt schedules. Level 4 — Audit proficiency

Trace formulas, identify hardcodes, find circularity, check assumptions and reconcile outputs. Level 5 — Automation

Power Query + VBA + Power Pivot to eliminate repetitive work. Power Query is particularly valuable here because queries can be refreshed after importing and transforming data, rather than repeatedly cleaning the same source manually.

One practical rule

If you're starting investment banking, I'd spend far more time mastering shortcuts, formulas, formatting and modeling conventions than installing dozens of third-party add-ins. A banker who can build a clean three-statement model entirely from the keyboard is much more useful than someone with 15 add-ins but weak Excel fundamentals.

If you want, I can also give you a “Top 50 Excel shortcuts for investment banking” one-page cheat sheet, organized specifically around DCF, LBO, M&A and three-statement modeling.

Sources cited in this answer5

If you're going into investment banking, Excel speed matters less because you know hundreds of shortcuts and more because you can build, audit, navigate, and format a model without reaching for the mouse.

Here’s the practical “must know” stack.

1. Excel add-ins & tools

Tier 1 — Learn these first

Tool	What bankers use it for	Priority
Macabacus	Financial-modeling shortcuts, formula auditing, formatting, Excel ↔ PowerPoint linking, templates	⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Power Query	Importing, cleaning, merging and refreshing messy data	⭐⭐⭐⭐
Power Pivot	Large datasets and relational financial analysis	⭐⭐⭐
Solver	Optimization / constrained scenarios	⭐⭐
Analysis ToolPak	Regression, statistics and other analytical work	⭐⭐
Inquire	Comparing/auditing workbooks and identifying spreadsheet differences	⭐⭐
VBA / Macros	Automating repetitive tasks	⭐⭐⭐⭐

Macabacus is the most specifically finance-oriented option. It provides 100+ customizable shortcuts, formula-auditing tools, financial-modeling tools, charting and Excel-to-PowerPoint functionality.

macabacus.com

Power Query is increasingly useful when you're given raw company/market data that needs cleaning before it enters a model. Microsoft describes it as a tool for connecting to external data, transforming it, merging tables and refreshing the resulting data.

Solver is useful for optimization problems involving an objective cell, variable cells and constraints.

The Analysis ToolPak provides statistical tools such as regression, histograms and sampling.

Important distinction

You do not need every add-in installed to be a good banking analyst.

I'd prioritize:

Macabacus → Power Query → VBA → Power Pivot → Solver/ToolPak/Inquire

And learn native Excel extremely well before relying on add-ins.

2. The Excel shortcuts every banker should know

I'm assuming Windows Excel, since that's the environment most commonly encountered in banking. Mac and Windows shortcuts differ substantially, particularly for ribbon commands.

Navigation

These should become muscle memory:

Shortcut	Function
`Ctrl + Arrow`	Jump to edge of data
`Ctrl + Shift + Arrow`	Select to edge of data
`Ctrl + Home`	Go to A1
`Ctrl + End`	Go to last used cell
`Ctrl + Page Up/Down`	Move between worksheets

Ctrl + Arrow and Ctrl + Shift + Arrow are particularly important when you're navigating huge operating models.

3. Formula shortcuts

These are banker essentials.

`F4` — Lock references

While editing a formula:

A1 → $A$1 → A$1 → $A1 → A1

This is essential when building forecasts and dragging formulas across periods.

`Ctrl + [`

Jump to the cells referenced by the current formula.

Extremely useful for auditing a model.

`Ctrl + ]`

Jump to cells that depend on the current cell.

`Ctrl + ~`

Toggle between:

formula view

and

calculated values

Excellent for quickly reviewing model logic.

`Alt + =`

AutoSum.

`Ctrl + Shift + Enter`

Historically important for array formulas; less important in modern Excel because dynamic arrays have largely replaced the old CSE workflow.

4. Paste Special

One of the highest-value skills in banking.

`Ctrl + Alt + V`

Opens Paste Special.

You should be comfortable with:

Values
Formats
Formulas
Transpose
Multiply
Divide

For example, if you have a column of numbers that needs to be converted from thousands to millions, you can use Paste Special → Divide rather than writing another formula.

5. Formatting shortcuts

Financial models involve a lot of formatting.

Know these:

Shortcut	Function
`Ctrl + 1`	Format Cells
`Ctrl + B`	Bold
`Ctrl + I`	Italic
`Ctrl + U`	Underline
`Ctrl + Shift + $`	Currency format

But don't obsess over generic Excel formatting shortcuts. In banking, your firm may have a specific formatting convention or Macabacus-based formatting system.

6. Row/column manipulation

Learn these until they're automatic:

Ctrl + Space → select entire column
Shift + Space → select entire row
Ctrl + + → insert
Ctrl + - → delete
Ctrl + 9 → hide rows
Ctrl + 0 → hide columns
Alt + = → AutoSum

And learn to use Group/Outline for large models.

7. The functions you actually need

Shortcuts aren't enough. For banking, I'd make sure you are extremely comfortable with:

Core

SUM
MIN
MAX
AVERAGE
COUNT
ROUND
ABS

Logic

IF
IFS
AND
OR
IFERROR

Lookup

XLOOKUP
INDEX
MATCH
XMATCH

You should understand both XLOOKUP and the traditional INDEX/MATCH, because you'll encounter older banking models.

8. Investment-banking-specific Excel skills

This is where Excel knowledge turns into banking Excel knowledge.

You should be able to build without much hesitation:

3-statement financial models
DCFs
Trading comps
Precedent transactions
Accretion/dilution analyses
LBO models
Debt schedules
Sources & uses
Purchase-price allocation
Sensitivity tables
Scenario analyses
Operating forecasts
Revenue / EBITDA bridges

And, critically, understand why the formulas work, not merely reproduce them.

9. Learn Data Tables & sensitivity analysis

This is particularly important for valuation.

Excel's What-If Analysis includes Data Tables, Goal Seek and Scenarios; Data Tables can evaluate one- or two-variable sensitivities, while Goal Seek works backward from a desired result to determine an input.

For example:

              WACC
          8% 9% 10% 11% 12%
        --------------------------------
4.0% | ... ... ... ... ...
4.5% | ... ... ... ... ...
5.0% | ... ... ... ... ...
5.5% | ... ... ... ... ...

That kind of sensitivity table is much more relevant to an analyst than knowing obscure Excel functions.

10. VBA: learn enough to be dangerous

You don't need to become a software engineer.

But you should understand:

Recording a macro
Running a macro
Editing basic VBA
Variables
For loops
If statements
Working with ranges
Copy/paste automation
Opening/saving workbooks
Creating simple custom functions

The goal is:

If I've done this manually 50 times, can Excel do it for me? That's where VBA becomes valuable.

11. Excel → PowerPoint is a major banking skill

Don't underestimate this.

Bankers frequently move:

Excel analysis → PowerPoint presentation

Macabacus specifically supports linking Excel data/charts to PowerPoint and Word, as well as formatting and presentation workflows.

You want to understand:

Linked vs. embedded objects
Updating links
Paste as picture
Paste as linked Excel object
Chart formatting
Maintaining source formatting
Breaking/unbreaking links
Updating multiple slides efficiently

12. The 20 shortcuts I'd memorize first

If you're starting from zero, don't try to memorize 150.

Memorize these:

F2 Edit cell
F4 Lock reference
Ctrl + C Copy
Ctrl + X Cut
Ctrl + V Paste
Ctrl + Alt + V Paste Special
Ctrl + Z Undo
Ctrl + Y Redo
Ctrl + Arrow Jump through data
Ctrl + Shift + → Select through data
Ctrl + Home Go to A1
Ctrl + End Go to last used cell
Ctrl + PageUp Previous sheet
Ctrl + PageDown Next sheet
Ctrl + [ Trace precedents
Ctrl + ] Trace dependents
Ctrl + ~ Show formulas
Alt + = AutoSum
Ctrl + 1 Format Cells
F5 Go To

Wall Street Prep's finance-oriented shortcut guide highlights many of these same commands, including F2, F4, precedent/dependent tracing, formula view and Paste Special.

The real "banker Excel" hierarchy

I'd learn it in this order:

1. Keyboard navigation ↓ 2. Formula construction & absolute references ↓ 3. Formatting without a mouse ↓ 4. Financial functions ↓ 5. Model architecture ↓ 6. Auditing / error checking ↓ 7. Sensitivity & scenario analysis ↓ 8. Power Query / data manipulation ↓ 9. VBA / automation ↓ 10. Macabacus

The biggest mistake is trying to become a shortcut expert before becoming a financial-modeling expert. The shortcuts are there to make good modeling faster—not to substitute for understanding the model.

If you're preparing for an investment-banking internship or analyst role, a very effective target is: be able to build a basic 3-statement model + DCF entirely from the keyboard, then audit someone else's model quickly.

Macabacus specifically supports linking Excel data/charts to PowerPoint and Word, as well as formatting and presentation workflows.

Essential Excel Add-Ins for Investment Banking

Capital IQ / FactSet / Bloomberg Add-in: The holy trinity of market data. These plug-ins allow bankers to pull live market caps, historical stock prices, comps data, and transaction multiples directly into Excel via proprietary formulas (like =CIQ() or =BDP()).
Macabacus / ASquared / Efficient Finance: Productivity add-ins tailored specifically for finance professionals. They automate tedious formatting (checking for hardcoded cells vs. formulas, standardizing font colors, error checking) and build dynamic shortcuts for charting, football field analysis, and agenda generation.
Power Query: Built into modern Excel, this is crucial for data ingestion. It lets bankers quickly clean, reshape, and merge messy data from multiple target company decks or massive data tapes without resorting to error-prone manual copy-pasting. Essential Keyboard Shortcuts (No Mouse Required!)

Investment bankers try to avoid the mouse at all costs. Here are the core navigation, formatting, and modeling shortcuts you need to commit to muscle memory.

Navigation & Selection

Ctrl + Arrow Keys : Jump to the very edge of a data region (skipping blanks or stopping at the last filled cell).
Ctrl + Shift + Arrow Keys : Highlight a continuous block of data instantly.
Ctrl + Home / Ctrl + End : Jump immediately to cell A1 or the bottom-right corner of your active data sheet.
Ctrl + Page Down / Ctrl + Page Up : Switch forward and backward between workbook tabs. [](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7zvgrWCyD8)

Data Editing & Formulas

F2 : Edit the active cell (crucial for checking formula precedents).
F4 : Absolute/relative reference toggle (e.g., changing A1 to $A$1 ) or repeating your last action in some contexts.
Alt + = : Automatically insert a SUM formula for the column or row above/left.
Ctrl + (grave accent): Toggle between showing cell values and showing underlying formulas across the whole sheet.

Inserting & Deleting

Ctrl + Shift + + (plus key): Open the Insert dialog box to insert cells, rows, or columns.
