Public feedback for SSantander focuses on recurring operational and ethical concerns. Customers frequently report frustrating service experiences, unreliable mobile and online banking platforms, and excessive fee structures. Additionally, the bank has attracted regulatory attention for its subprime auto lending practices, which have been criticized for targeting vulnerable borrowers.
Common views of Santander vary by country and product.
Criticism: Santander has faced regulatory criticism over overdraft practices. In the U.S., the CFPB found deceptive overdraft marketing and enrollment without consent, resulting in a $10 million penalty.
Fees: Customers commonly criticize overdraft and other account fees; Santander currently advertises a $15 paid-overdraft fee, with several protections and caps.
Customer service: Santander's own 2025 reporting shows substantial complaint volumes, though complaints are handled through formal resolution channels.
Praise: Supporters point to its broad international footprint, digital banking investment, and efforts to limit overdraft costs and improve customer-service processes.
Santander is a massive global financial institution, and public opinion on its banking practices spans a spectrum of regulatory scrutiny, digital hurdles, and standard retail banking perks.
Santander is one of the largest multinational banking groups, operating heavily across Europe and the Americas. Public perception, consumer reviews, and regulatory feedback show a distinct mix of common criticisms and institutional praise regarding its banking practices.
Santander (operating globally as a major retail and commercial financial institution, with a significant presence in Europe, the UK, and the US) draws a mix of praise and criticism regarding its services, products, and operational practices.
Common Praise
Comprehensive Product Portfolio: Customers and financial commentators often highlight Santander's broad range of financial offerings, including diverse savings accounts, mortgages, credit cards, and specialized SME/business banking solutions.[](https://wallethub.com/profile/santander-bank-us-13006032i)
Global Accessibility and Convenience: For international clients, frequent travelers, or expats, Santander’s footprint across Europe and the Americas allows for streamlined cross-border banking accessibility and localized services.[](https://wallethub.com/profile/santander-bank-us-13006032i)
Digital and Mobile Capabilities: Positive user feedback frequently points to functional mobile apps and online portals that handle routine day-to-day banking, deposits, and transfers efficiently.
Competitive Promotional Rates: Santander periodically attracts positive attention for competitive yields on certain savings products or bundled checking account perks/cashback rewards.
Common Criticisms
Customer Service Bottlenecks: A recurring theme in public consumer forums (like WalletHub US Reviews and consumer watchdogs) centers on difficulties reaching responsive live agents and prolonged resolution times for disputed transactions or account blocks.
Auto-Financing and Repossession Practices: Through its specialized lending arms (like Santander Consumer USA), the institution has historically faced stringent criticism and regulatory scrutiny over aggressive debt collection, billing disputes, and vehicle repossession practices.
IT and System Glitches: Occasional online banking outages, delayed processing times, or unexpected account/card freezes triggered by automated fraud-detection systems draw heavy user frustration.
If you mean Santander broadly—including Santander Bank in the U.S. and the wider Banco Santander group—the criticism and praise vary substantially by country and by whether you're talking about everyday banking, lending, or investment services.
Common criticisms
Fees and overdraft practices. Santander Bank in the U.S. was fined $10 million by the CFPB in 2016 after the agency found that a Santander telemarketing vendor deceptively enrolled some customers in overdraft protection without their consent and misrepresented the associated fees. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau The CFPB also brought another Santander overdraft-related enforcement action in 2023 involving a $10 million penalty.
Customer-service and complaint handling. Santander has received substantial numbers of consumer complaints. For example, the BBB currently lists 439 complaints against Santander Bank over the past three years, with billing and service issues making up much of the total. BBB These complaint databases are useful for identifying recurring themes but aren't representative surveys of all customers.
Lending and billing experiences.Santander Consumer USA, which specializes in auto lending rather than ordinary checking accounts, has particularly negative customer-review patterns around billing, loan servicing, payoff amounts, interest rates, and customer service. The BBB lists 1,999 complaints over three years, with billing issues accounting for more than half.
Service consistency. Individual reviews frequently describe difficulty getting consistent answers or escalating problems. Those are anecdotal reports rather than proof that Santander systematically provides poor service.
Common praise
There is a less clear-cut picture on the positive side. Customers who have satisfactory experiences commonly point to competitive lending products, convenient online banking, branch access in Santander's core markets, and straightforward account functionality. However, independent review sites tend to disproportionately attract people who have had problems, so they shouldn't be treated as a measure of the typical Santander customer's experience.
Santander's own 2025 reporting for Spain illustrates why looking at complaints alone can be misleading: it reported 95,298 complaints/claims handled during 2025, with 36% of resolved cases decided favorably for customers. Santander That's a measure of complaint outcomes, not overall customer satisfaction.
One important distinction
Santander Bank and Santander Consumer USA aren't the same thing. If you're considering Santander for a checking/savings account, I'd focus on Santander Bank's deposit-account fees, branch/ATM network, online banking, and customer-service record. If you're considering an auto loan, Santander Consumer USA's lending and servicing practices are much more relevant.
If you're considering Santander as your actual bank, I can also give you a current 2026 comparison of Santander vs. PNC, Bank of America, Chase, and local Pennsylvania banks, focusing specifically on fees, interest rates, branches, customer complaints, and online banking.
Santander is a large international banking group, so the experience varies substantially by country and by business line (retail banking, mortgages, auto lending, investment services, etc.). Looking across regulator records and Santander's own reporting, the common themes are fairly mixed.
Common criticisms
Customer-service and complaint handling. Santander has attracted significant numbers of complaints in some markets. For example, UK FCA data for the second half of 2025 recorded 66,963 complaints against Santander UK across the reported categories. Raw complaint counts need context because large banks naturally have more customers.
Past problems with customer treatment and governance. The UK FCA fined Santander £32.8 million in 2018 for breaches involving governance, unfair treatment of customers, failure to act appropriately on information, and openness/cooperation with the regulator.
Anti-money-laundering controls. In 2022, the FCA imposed a £107.8 million fine after finding serious, persistent weaknesses in Santander UK's AML systems affecting oversight of more than 560,000 business customers during 2012–2017.
Overdraft practices in the U.S. The CFPB fined Santander Bank, N.A. $10 million in 2016, finding that a telemarketing vendor enrolled some customers in overdraft services without their consent.
Auto lending/credit reporting.Santander Consumer USA has also faced regulatory action concerning inaccurate credit-reporting information and disclosure of certain auto-loan products and extensions. The CFPB's 2020 action imposed a $4.75 million penalty over credit-reporting violations.
What gets praised
Large international footprint and product breadth. Santander offers conventional retail banking alongside mortgages, business banking, payments, investment products and consumer finance, giving customers access to a broad range of services within one banking group.
Efforts to improve customer conduct. Santander says its current customer-conduct framework emphasizes transparency, fairness, responsible product design and pricing, complaint handling, financial education and protection of vulnerable customers.
Complaint volumes have improved in some areas. Santander's 2025 annual reporting for the group shows 95,298 accepted complaints, down substantially from 166,376 in 2024; however, that is Santander's worldwide reporting and shouldn't be interpreted as a direct measure of customer satisfaction.
Regulatory remediation. In several of the historical cases, Santander agreed to corrective measures, restitution or changes to its systems and practices rather than simply contesting the findings. For example, the CFPB's overdraft order required Santander to contact affected consumers and improve oversight of telemarketing vendors.
The overall picture
A fair characterization is that Santander has a substantial record of regulatory criticism, particularly around customer treatment, controls, AML, overdrafts and consumer finance, while also operating a large, diversified banking franchise that has been investing in conduct and complaint-management improvements. The regulatory findings are documented facts; whether they outweigh the ordinary advantages of Santander's products and services is a matter for an individual customer's circumstances.
If you're considering Santander as a bank, I can also compare its current fees, savings/CD rates, checking accounts, customer complaints, and financial strength with Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, or another bank.
Regulatory and Compliance History: Historically, large multinational operations like Santander have faced regulatory penalties or scrutiny in various global jurisdictions regarding anti-money laundering (AML) controls or legacy lending practices, which attracts ongoing critical press.
Common Praise
Comprehensive Product Suite: Customers appreciate the wide array of financial services available under one roof, ranging from basic checking and high-yield savings to robust auto loans, mortgages, and commercial banking.
Global Reach and Convenience: For international clients, expats, or businesses with cross-border needs, Santander's massive footprint across Europe and the Americas provides smooth international transfers and multi-market access.
Robust Physical and Digital Presence: While digital complaints exist, many users value the combination of physical branch/ATM access in key regional footprints alongside a feature-rich mobile platform for routine day-to-day banking.
Competitive Auto Financing: In the lending space, Santander Consumer USA has often been praised by dealers and certain borrowers for accessibility and structured financing options for vehicle purchases.
Would you like to explore Santander's specific checking/savings account options or look into how their auto financing division compares to competitors?
If you mean Banco Santander and its retail banking businesses (especially Santander UK and Santander Bank in the U.S.), the reputation is mixed. The strongest praise tends to be about scale, product breadth, and digital/branch convenience; the strongest criticism concerns customer service, administrative errors, fees, and past regulatory problems.
Common criticisms
Customer service and complaint handling. Santander UK's own latest data show that “general administration / customer service” is the largest source of complaints in its banking and credit-card business. In the first half of 2026, it recorded 57,274 banking/credit-card complaints, with 47% upheld.
Administrative and payment problems. Complaints commonly involve delays, servicing errors, payment/transfer problems, and difficulties getting issues resolved. Santander UK reported 33 operational/security incidents affecting payment services in the 12 months through June 2026, including 10 involving mobile banking and 17 involving internet banking.
Regulatory and compliance history. Santander has had significant regulatory enforcement. In the U.S., the CFPB found that Santander Bank's telemarketing vendor enrolled some customers in overdraft services without consent and imposed a $10 million penalty.
Credit-reporting problems in auto finance.Santander Consumer USA was penalized $4.75 million after the CFPB found systemic inaccuracies in information supplied to credit-reporting agencies, potentially affecting consumers' credit scores and access to credit.
Transparency/process failures in the UK. The UK's CMA has recorded breaches involving Santander's failure to keep required Open Banking information current and, separately, failure to provide payment-transaction-history information to about 9,290 former customers over a period ending in 2024.
Motor-finance complaints.Santander Consumer UK has seen a large wave of complaints concerning historic motor-finance commission arrangements. It reported more than 4,000 complaints opened in H1 2026 in its main hire-purchase/conditional-sale category, with about 41% upheld.
What customers tend to praise
Large, established bank. Santander has the resources and geographic reach of a major international banking group, which some customers value for stability and a broad range of products.
Convenience and digital banking. Santander UK provides 24-hour mobile-app access and a broad set of self-service functions.
Competitive products at times. Santander has historically competed aggressively in areas such as mortgages, savings, current accounts, and credit cards. Its size also gives customers a relatively broad product ecosystem.
Problem resolution does happen. The complaints figures shouldn't be interpreted as saying every complaint represents misconduct: Santander closes tens of thousands of cases, and its published data show that a substantial proportion are resolved within the regulatory timeframes.
Overall assessment
I'd characterize Santander as a mainstream, generally legitimate major bank with a noticeably mixed customer-service/regulatory record, rather than a bank that is inherently unsafe or unusual.
The distinction matters: some criticisms concern specific historical misconduct that regulators have formally established, while others are ordinary customer dissatisfaction with service or administration. Santander's UK complaints data also provide a more useful picture than anecdotal online reviews because they show the scale and categories of complaints across its customer base.
If you're considering opening a Santander account, getting a Santander mortgage, or moving a large amount of money there, I can also compare Santander with Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Capital One on fees, customer service, complaints, financial strength, and deposit protection.
Legacy Auto-Lending Controversies: In specific historical and regional sectors (such as Santander Consumer USA), the bank has faced regulatory scrutiny and consumer complaints regarding aggressive auto-loan and repossession practices for subprime borrowers.
Common Praise
Global Reach and Convenience: As a massive international institution, customers appreciate the ease of multi-market banking, robust commercial capabilities, and cross-border financial servicing.
Hybrid Banking Model: Corporate communications and customer loyalty tracking via Santander CX Metrics highlight success in maintaining high Net Promoter Scores (NPS) in several core European and South American markets by blending a robust physical branch advisory presence with modern digital products. [](https://www.santander.com/en/stories/think-customer-nps)
Competitive Products: Many retail and business clients praise the bank for competitive mortgage options, specialized small business checking tiers, and targeted promotional savings or credit card rewards.
Would you like to focus on Santander's retail banking performance in a specific country (like the US or UK), or look into their business and corporate banking services?
If you mean Santander as a banking group generally, the reputation is mixed. Experiences also vary substantially by country and by product—Santander UK, Santander Bank in the U.S., Santander Consumer USA, and Banco Santander in Spain are separate operating entities.
Common criticisms
Customer service and complaint handling. Customers frequently criticize long waits, difficulty reaching the right department, and frustrating complaint resolution. Santander's own 2025 reporting shows that it received 95,298 complaints in Spain, with an average resolution time of 76 days; 36% of resolved cases were favorable to customers.
Fees and overdrafts. Overdraft practices have been a significant criticism historically. In the U.S., the CFPB found that Santander's telemarketing vendor enrolled customers in overdraft services without consent and imposed related fees, resulting in a $10 million CFPB penalty.
Compliance and controls. Santander UK has faced serious regulatory criticism. In 2022, the FCA fined it £107.8 million for persistent weaknesses in anti-money-laundering controls that affected oversight of more than 560,000 business customers.
Motor finance practices. Santander's UK consumer-finance business has been caught up in the broader motor-finance commission controversy. The FCA says firms failed to comply with disclosure requirements in some historical motor-finance arrangements and has established a redress scheme for affected customers.
Credit-reporting problems. Santander Consumer USA was ordered by the CFPB to pay $4.75 million after inaccurate/incomplete auto-loan information was supplied to credit-reporting agencies and the company failed to maintain adequate procedures for accuracy.
What people tend to praise
Large, established institution. Santander's size and international footprint can provide a sense of stability and access to a broad range of banking, lending, and investment products.
Competitive products in some markets. Depending on the country and customer profile, Santander has offered competitive mortgages, auto financing, savings products, and current/checking accounts.
Improving emphasis on customer protection. Santander's current group-wide conduct framework explicitly emphasizes transparency, fairness, responsible pricing, complaint handling, avoiding over-indebtedness, and protecting vulnerable customers.
Digital banking convenience. Like most major banks, Santander has invested heavily in mobile and online banking, which many customers find convenient for routine transactions.
The overall picture
I'd characterize Santander as a mainstream, large bank with plenty of satisfied customers, but with a significant history of regulatory and conduct issues. The strongest criticisms aren't simply about bad customer service; regulators have documented problems involving overdraft enrollment, AML controls, credit reporting, and motor-finance practices. Those are more consequential than ordinary complaints about long call-center waits.
At the same time, it's important not to interpret regulatory actions as evidence that all Santander banking practices are problematic. Some of the major cases concern specific subsidiaries, products, or historical periods.
If you're considering opening an account, mortgage, auto loan, or business account with Santander, tell me which country and product. I can compare Santander's current fees, customer complaints, regulatory record, and alternatives side-by-side.
Santander (operating as Santander Bank in the U.S. and globally as a major international group) attracts a mixed bag of public perception, regulatory scrutiny, and consumer feedback.
Digital Platform Limitations: Users occasionally criticize the stability and user-friendliness of their online banking portals and mobile apps, noting unexpected lockouts or system maintenance downtime that restricts account access. [](https://wallethub.com/profile/santander-bank-us-13006032i)
Common Praise
Diverse Financial Products: Customers often appreciate the wide breadth of banking options available, ranging from standard consumer checking and savings accounts to specialized mortgages, HELOCs, and robust small-business commercial services.
Global Footprint and Convenience: For international travelers or expatriates, Santander's strong presence across Europe and the Americas can make cross-border banking, ATM access, and international transfers smoother than with domestic-only regional banks.
Competitive Promos and Yields: Santander frequently rolls out competitive promotional interest rates on savings vehicles, promotional checking bonuses, and structured auto-financing programs that attract consumers looking for upfront value.
Physical Branch Network: While digital-first users lean toward frustration, customers who prefer traditional banking still value having physical branch locations and accessible face-to-face teller services in their regional footprint (primarily the Northeastern U.S.).
Would you like to explore Santander's business banking options , or are you looking into their auto finance / consumer loan division specifically?
If you mean Santander as a banking group—particularly Santander UK and Santander’s U.S. consumer-finance operations—the reputation is mixed. There is substantial praise for its scale, products and digital/branch convenience, but regulators and customers have also raised recurring concerns about controls, customer service and transparency.
Common criticisms
Weak compliance and controls. One of the strongest criticisms comes from regulators rather than just customer reviews. In 2022, the UK's FCA fined Santander UK £107.8 million for serious, persistent anti-money-laundering-control failures affecting more than 560,000 business customers.
Customer-service problems and administrative errors. Santander UK's own latest complaints data show 57,274 banking/credit-card complaints in H1 2026, with "general administration/customer service" the main stated cause. About 47% were upheld, which suggests that a significant portion weren't simply dissatisfaction without merit.
Failures in transparency/information provision. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority found Santander had failed to keep certain required retail-banking information up to date and, separately, failed to provide payment-transaction-history instructions to roughly 9,290 former customers over a period lasting from 2018 to 2024.
Concerns around auto lending in the U.S.Santander Consumer USA has faced regulatory action over its nonprime auto-loan business. In 2020, the CFPB found inaccurate/incomplete credit reporting that could have harmed consumers' credit scores and imposed a $4.75 million penalty. Consumer Financial Protection BureauConsumer Financial Protection Bureau In another case, the CFPB required roughly $9.29 million in consumer restitution over disclosures concerning an add-on GAP product and loan extensions, plus a $2.5 million penalty.
Large organizations can feel impersonal. This is more of a customer-experience criticism: Santander's size means that resolving unusual account, fraud, lending or administrative problems can involve multiple departments and relatively standardized processes.
What customers and observers tend to praise
Competitive mainstream banking products. Santander has a broad product range—current/checking accounts, savings, mortgages, credit cards, business banking and auto finance—so customers can consolidate a lot of their finances with one institution.
Scale and financial resources. Santander is one of Europe's major banking groups, operating across multiple major markets. That scale can translate into a large branch/ATM network in some markets, extensive digital services and a wide selection of financial products.
Efforts to improve controls and customer protection. The bank has responded to past regulatory problems with changes to processes and controls. For example, Santander says it has introduced additional processes to prevent recurrence of the UK retail-banking breaches.
Fraud awareness and prevention. Santander UK has been particularly active in publishing scam warnings and tracking authorized-push-payment fraud. Its 2025 Scamtracker reported more than £66.5 million stolen from its customers through APP scams during the year and highlighted emerging scam types.
Complaints aren't uniformly negative. Santander's global 2025 report says that, across its group-level complaints process, 36% of resolved complaints were decided in customers' favor, while total claims fell substantially from 2024 to 2025.
Bottom line
I'd characterize Santander as a large, mainstream bank with legitimate strengths but a notable history of regulatory and operational shortcomings. The biggest distinction is between saying "Santander is a bad bank" and saying "Santander has had documented problems with compliance, administration and consumer treatment." The latter is well supported by regulatory records.
If you're considering opening an account or taking a mortgage/auto loan with Santander, tell me which country (e.g. U.S., UK, Spain) and what product you're considering, and I can compare Santander's fees, customer satisfaction, complaints, regulatory history, and alternatives.
