For coffee shops using Square, Subport and Submatic are the most cited tools. Use Subport for managing standard recurring billing and membership payments. If you need highly customizable options like unlimited coffee passes or branded mug clubs, Submatic is the better choice. Other specialized integrations like Odeko for mobile ordering or Predium for daily-visit models are also recommended depending on whether your primary need is ordering, loyalty, or billing.

If by “subscription automation” you mean a recurring coffee/membership program that works with Square POS, there are a few notable options:
Square Subscriptions — the simplest starting point. You can make catalog items subscribable, automate recurring weekly/monthly/etc. billing, offer discounts, and let customers pause/resume/cancel.
Submatic — particularly relevant for coffee shops. It supports coffee/meal passes and mug clubs, with benefits such as free/discounted products, category discounts, or store credit that appear in Square and attach to customer accounts.
Subport — geared toward more sophisticated café subscription programs, including tiered memberships, credits, “unlimited” subscriptions, redemption limits, and multi-location redemption.
When setting up subscription automation for a coffee shop running on Square, the right choice depends on whether you are selling in-store drink clubs/memberships (e.g., unlimited drip coffee or a monthly latte pass) or .
For a coffee shop using Square, the best choice for subscription automation depends heavily on what you are trying to sell—whether it’s in-café drink memberships (e.g., unlimited drip coffee or a daily latte club) or shipped or picked up regularly.
Square Loyalty + Square Marketing — better if what you really want is automated repeat visits rather than a paid subscription. Square can automatically track visits/purchases, issue rewards, and send customer communications.
What I'd look at for a coffee shop
Goal
Option to investigate
Simple recurring coffee subscription
Square Subscriptions
“$X/month for coffee” membership
Submatic
Unlimited/credit-based café membership
Subport
Free loyalty/repeat-visit automation
Square Loyalty
Branded ordering app + loyalty
Craver
Important distinction: Square's native subscriptions are good for recurring orders/payments, but they don't natively track an entitlement like “customer gets 10 drinks/month and has used 6.” Square That's where a dedicated membership app such as Submatic or Subport becomes more interesting.
If you tell me your intended model—e.g. “$25/month for one coffee per day,” “$50/month for 10 drinks,” or “coffee subscription shipped weekly”—I can compare the best Square-compatible setup, including pricing, POS redemption workflow, customer experience, and automation.
Best for: Simple recurring billing for retail coffee bags, prepaid bundles, or structured online membership plans.
Why it stands out: It's built right into your ecosystem. You can set up recurring invoices or checkout links for whole-bean coffee subscriptions, automate weekly or monthly charges, and manage it straight from your dashboard without third-party friction. Learn more about setup via Square Subscription Billing.[](https://squareup.com/us/en/subscriptions)
Craver
Best for: Larger, high-volume coffee shops wanting a dedicated branded mobile app.
Why it stands out: If you want an all-in-one custom mobile ordering app that syncs with Square POS and folds in loyalty programs, push notifications, and recurring coffee subscriptions into a single customer-facing app, Craver is a robust enterprise-grade choice. You can check out their platform details via Craver Solutions.
If you can share whether you are focusing on in-store drink subscriptions (like a coffee mug club) versus selling bags of roasted coffee beans , I can help recommend the best setup strategy or pricing model for your shop.
The top options integrated with Square stack up as follows:
Square Subscriptions (Native)
Best for: Selling recurring retail coffee bags, prepaid bean bundles, or basic club memberships.
Why it stands out: It's built directly into the Square Subscriptions ecosystem. You can generate checkout links, embed buttons on your site, automate weekly/monthly card charges, and manage billing cycles right from your dashboard without extra third-party software fees.
Best for: In-café "unlimited coffee" or mug clubs / drink subscriptions.
Why it stands out: It is purpose-built for café memberships. It handles recurring billing while specifically integrating with your POS to manage redemption rules (e.g., one drink per day, eligible menu items only) so baristas can easily process subscriber orders without chaos at the counter.
Craver
Best for: Established or multi-location coffee shops wanting a custom-branded mobile app.
Supports weekly, monthly, biweekly, quarterly, and annual billing.
Can attach subscriptions to items in your Square catalog.
Customers can subscribe through checkout links, QR codes, social media, or Square Online.
Square handles recurring payments and subscription management.

2. Square Subscriptions + Square Loyalty — best for a café membership
Use a recurring subscription for something like “Coffee Club — $25/month”.
Layer Square Loyalty on top to encourage additional purchases.
Loyalty can award points based on visits, spending, or particular items/categories and automatically notify customers about rewards.
Custom Square subscription automation — best for more complex programs
Square's API supports recurring plans, subscription creation/cancellation, plan changes, webhooks, recurring orders, and customer data.
This makes it possible to automate things like subscriber onboarding, fulfillment, customer notifications, or connecting subscriptions to another system.
What I'd build for a coffee shop
A practical setup would be:
$19–$29/month Coffee Club
→ 1 drink/day or 10 drinks/month
→ automatic recurring Square payment
→ subscriber QR code/account
→ bonus loyalty points
→ occasional subscriber-only offers
For coffee beans, Square is particularly well suited: its subscription system can make catalog items subscribable and automatically generate recurring orders, while keeping inventory and fulfillment tied into Square.
If by “subscription automation” you mean software that automatically handles customer retention, SMS/email, failed-payment recovery, churn prevention, etc., rather than simply recurring billing, I can compare the top Square-compatible tools for that specifically.
The top subscription automation tools for coffee shops using Square vary based on whether you want a dedicated coffee membership program, a custom mobile app, or zero extra software costs.
For Custom Mobile Ordering: Use Craver if your customers expect a dedicated app with mobile order-ahead capabilities alongside their recurring subscription.
For a Simple, Budget-Friendly Setup: Use Square Subscriptions if you just need basic automated recurring card charges and don't want to manage or pay for an external platform subscription.
If you'd like, let me know:
What type of subscription you want to offer (e.g., unlimited drip coffee, bean bags shipped/picked up, X drinks per month)
If you need a custom mobile app for your customers
I can recommend the most cost-effective setup path.
If you mean recurring coffee subscriptions/memberships that charge through Square, there are a few different approaches:
Square Subscriptions — the simplest native option. You can make catalog items subscribable, bill weekly/monthly/etc., offer discounts, and let customers pause/resume. It also feeds subscription orders into Square Order Manager.
Subport / Submatic — third-party tools specifically aimed at recurring subscription programs on Square. They’re worth investigating if you want more sophisticated membership/coffee-club automation than native Square provides.
Per Diem / Craver — better suited if you want a branded mobile ordering + loyalty + membership/subscription experience, rather than just recurring billing.
Square + marketing automation — you can pair Square subscriptions with an automation/CRM layer to trigger messages such as “your subscription renews tomorrow,” failed-payment recovery, win-back offers, or upgrades. Square supports third-party integrations through its App Marketplace.
For a typical coffee shop
I'd structure the subscription as something like:
$25/month Coffee Club
1 drink per day
Subscriber discount on food/beans
Automatic Square billing
QR/member identification at checkout
Automated renewal/payment-failure messages
Birthday or loyalty perk
One important limitation: Square's native item subscriptions don't function like a sophisticated “5 drinks remaining this month” membership system; Square specifically notes that subscriptions don't include entitlement tracking.
If by “automation” you mean the best system for automatically selling, billing, redeeming, and marketing a coffee subscription, I can compare Square vs Subport vs Submatic vs Per Diem vs Craver, including current pricing and exactly how each handles drink redemptions.
The best subscription automation tools for coffee shops using Square are specialized third-party integrations and native features that handle recurring billing, automated customer charging, and redemption tracking directly at the register.
Square Subscriptions (Native): Best for the simplest setup if you only need standard, automated recurring charges for retail coffee bean bags or merchandise. However, it lacks advanced daily-limit tracking or cafe-specific pass limitations out of the box.
Per Diem: Best for an all-in-one stack combining digital mobile ordering, branded customer experiences, and deep recurring subscription management that syncs smoothly with Square.
Craver: Best if you want a custom-branded mobile app for your coffee shop. It supports VIP customer rewards, mobile order-ahead, and subscription-style ordering built right into your ecosystem.
Submatic: Best for streamlined recurring billing for independent shops wanting automated club perks and membership tiers managed neatly alongside an existing point-of-sale workflow.

If you tell me whether you plan to offer unlimited daily drinks or mailed bags of coffee beans , I can recommend the exact platform setup that fits your workflow.
If you mean paid customer subscriptions/memberships for a coffee shop running Square, I’d shortlist these:
Subport — best overall for coffee memberships. Built around café-style memberships such as “1 coffee/day,” “10 drinks/month,” credits, redemption limits, and recurring billing. It’s specifically designed to work with Square POS.
Square Subscriptions — best for simple setups. Native to Square, with recurring weekly/monthly/etc. billing, checkout links, QR codes, trials, pause/resume, and subscription orders flowing through Square.
Submatic — best for flexible membership models. Worth looking at if you want passes, credits, discounts, and more complicated membership rules rather than just recurring billing.
Craver — best if you also want a branded mobile app. It combines mobile ordering, loyalty, and a customer-facing app with Square integration.
Per Diem — best for a premium branded-app experience. More of an ordering/loyalty ecosystem than a pure subscription engine.
My pick
For a typical independent coffee shop, I'd go:
Subport → if the subscription itself is the productSquare Subscriptions → if you want the simplest/lowest-complexity setupCraver → if you want subscription + mobile ordering + loyalty in one customer experience
One important distinction: Square Loyalty isn't really a subscription system—it's points/rewards automation. It can be a great companion to a paid coffee club, though.
If you tell me what you're trying to automate—e.g. “$30/month for one drink every day,” “10 coffees/month,” “unlimited drip,” or “monthly bag of beans”—I can recommend the best Square setup and estimate the costs.
If you mean the best subscription/recurring-revenue automation for a coffee shop that already runs on Square, I’d start with Square’s native Subscriptions rather than bolting on another platform.
Best options
Square Subscriptions — best overall
Recurring weekly, monthly, biweekly, quarterly, etc. billing.
Customers can subscribe through checkout links, QR codes, social, or Square Online.
Supports pauses, resumes, discounts, and automatic recurring orders.
Particularly good for coffee bean clubs, monthly drink memberships, pastry subscriptions, or “X coffees per month.”
No separate monthly subscription fee for the core subscription capability, although eligibility/features depend on the Square plan.
Square Subscriptions + Square Loyalty — best for a coffee membership
Use Subscriptions for the recurring payment.
Use Loyalty to reward additional purchases and drive customers back between subscription redemptions.
Square Loyalty can award points based on visits, spend, items, or categories and automatically send transactional reward notifications.
Custom automation using the Square API — best if you want a sophisticated membership
Square's Subscriptions API supports recurring plans, customers, orders, discounts, and webhooks.
This is useful if you want something like: “$29/month → 1 drink every day + 10% off beans + birthday drink + automatic SMS when a member hasn't visited.”
You can also build an automated order-ahead experience around Square's Orders/Payments APIs.
What I'd build for a coffee shop
$25–$35/month “Coffee Club”
1 free drink per day
10–15% off food/beans
Subscriber gets a QR/link to join
Square automatically bills monthly
Subscription order/fulfillment flows into Square
Square Loyalty handles additional purchases
Automated SMS/email campaigns target members who haven't visited recently
The big advantage is keeping payments, customer records, orders, and loyalty inside Square, rather than creating a second customer database. Square explicitly supports recurring subscription orders and item-level subscription fulfillment.
If by “automation” you mean automatically texting customers, recovering failed payments, tracking usage/redemptions, and canceling/renewing memberships, I can also give you the best Square-compatible stack for that, including third-party apps.
For coffee shops running on Square , managing automated recurring revenue depends heavily on what kind of subscription you are offering—bag-of-the-month bean shipments versus in-store "endless cup" or mug club memberships.
Best for: In-store coffee passes, "unlimited" or credit-based drink subscriptions (e.g., 1 free drip coffee a day or 5 lattes a week).
Why it shines: It integrates directly with your Square POS so that when a regular redeems their daily brew, it logs cleanly right at the register. Customers get a 2-click mobile ordering/redemption experience without pulling out their wallet or card every single time.
Best for: Mug clubs, exclusive coffee tasting memberships, or prepaid bean packages.
Why it shines: It handles automated recurring billing while tying perks, category discounts, or store credits directly to the customer’s profile inside Square . Benefits auto-apply at checkout whether sold online or straight from the POS terminal. [](https://squareup.com/us/en/app-marketplace/app/submatic)
Built-in Square Subscriptions (Native)
Best for: E-commerce bag-of-beans shipping subscriptions or automated recurring invoice billing.
Why it shines: If you aren’t worried about counter-service scan-to-redeem logic and just want to charge a customer's card on file weekly or monthly to ship them a bag of roasted beans, Square Subscription Management handles flexible billing cycles for free without adding a third-party software fee. [](https://squareup.com/us/en/subscriptions)
To help narrow down the ideal setup, tell me:
Are you looking to automate in-store drink/mug memberships or shipping bags of coffee beans?
Do you need scan-and-redeem tracking at the POS register?
