My greenhouse is overheating during midday sun. Who sells automatic vent openers and shade cloth systems?

Combating midday heat buildup is essential. Fortunately, a variety of hardware retailers, specialized greenhouse suppliers, and brand-direct sites sell heat-sensitive automatic vent openers (which operate on expanding wax pistons without electricity) and modular shade cloth systems.[1][2][3]

Where to Buy Automatic Vent Openers

Most automatic vent openers are universal or brand-specific (such as for Palram-Canopia or general cold frames/greenhouses like the *Agtec Univent * or *Bayliss * openers).[1][2]

• The Home Depot : Carries brand-name automatic roof vent openers like Palram-Canopia.
• Walmart : Offers online stock for greenhouse vent cylinder kits.
• Tractor Supply Company : Sells hardware-store-grade automatic vent replacements.
• Agtec.com : Direct supplier for heavy-duty automatic openers (like the 30-lb capacity Univent models).[1][2]

Where to Buy Shade Cloth Systems

Shade cloths come in varying percentages (e.g., 30% to 70%+ blockage) and can be bought as custom cuts or complete hanging hardware kits.[1][2]

• The Home Depot : Stocks ready-to-install systems from brands like Riverstone Industries.
• Wayfair : Features sliding/clip-on shade cloth kits tailored for specific greenhouse footprints (such as Palram setups).
• Tractor Supply Company : Offers UV-protected greenhouse shade kits complete with hanging clips/hangers.
• GGS Structures / Greenhouse Megastore : Excellent specialized commercial and hobbyist vendors for custom-dimension knitted or woven shade cloth panel systems.[1][2]

For South Florida sun, 30–50% shade cloth plus heat-activated roof vents is a sensible starting combination.

Several specialized retailers, general hardware chains, and online gardening suppliers carry both automatic vent openers and shade cloth systems. Most automatic vent openers use a non-electric, heat-sensitive wax/oil piston , while shade cloths are widely available in custom or pre-cut dimensions (usually blocking 30% to 60% of light).

Top places to source these items include:

• The brand or frame material of your greenhouse

I can help you figure out the correct shade percentage (e.g., 30% vs. 50%) and how many vent openers you'll need.

Yes. Since you're in the Riverside area, there are both local and online options.

For the overheating problem

I'd generally pair automatic roof ventilation + exterior shade cloth. The vent lets hot air escape while exterior shade prevents a lot of solar heat from entering in the first place.

For a Riverside summer greenhouse, 30–50% shade is a reasonable starting range, but the ideal percentage depends heavily on what you're growing. A ready-made 50% option is available from Planta:

• Planta 50% Shade Cloth - $350.00 (Planta Greenhouses)

If you tell me your greenhouse dimensions, brand/model, and what you're growing, I can narrow it down to a specific vent opener and shade-cloth size.

Several reliable online retailers and garden supply companies specialize in both automatic vent openers (passive wax-cylinder or motorized) and custom/pre-cut shade cloth systems.

Top suppliers where you can purchase both items include:

1. Greenhouse Megastore
   • What they offer: A massive selection of commercial and hobby greenhouse supplies. They sell automatic vent openers (such as Bayliss auto-openers) alongside a wide variety of custom-cut and bulk shade cloths (knitted, woven, and Aluminet reflective fabrics in various density percentages like 30% to 50%).

2. Palram - Canopia & Specialized Greenhouse Dealers
   • What they offer: If you have a branded hobby greenhouse (like Palram, Grandio, or Rion), the manufacturers themselves sell direct-fit passive solar vent openers that work via heat-expanded wax cylinders (requiring no electricity). Many authorized dealers (like Sheds Direct or MyGreenhouseStore.com ) bundle these with compatible shade shading kits.
   • Where to look: Check options like the Palram - Canopia Automatic Roof Vent Opener.[1][2][3]
3. Major Home Improvement Retailers (The Home Depot / Lowe's / Walmart)
   • What they offer: They carry universal heat-sensitive automatic vent opener 2-packs and standard knitted grommeted shade cloths online from third-party and direct agricultural suppliers.
   • Where to look: Search inventory on Home Depot.greenhousemegastore.com

To help narrow down the best cooling setup, what are the dimensions or brand of your greenhouse, and is it polycarbonate, glass, or film?

Yes. For a greenhouse that gets too hot at midday, I’d pair a heat-activated roof vent opener with 30–50% shade cloth.

Good places/products to consider

• Vego Auto Vent Opener – 2 Pack - $99.95 (Vego Garden)

• Univent Automatic Vent Opener - $56.00 (Charley's Greenhouse & Garden)

• Automatic Vent Opener – Standard - $63.99 (Grow Organic)

• Planta 50% Shade Cloth - $350.00 (Planta Greenhouses)

• Riverstone 30% Shade Cloth System - $259.99 (Vista Greenhouses)

• GROW1 30% Greenhouse Shade Cloth - $312.45 (Hydrobuilder)

• Vego Garden — its two-pack automatic opener is temperature-activated and currently listed around $100.

• Charley’s Greenhouse & Garden — sells the well-known Univent heat-activated opener.

• Grow Organic — another straightforward, electricity-free automatic opener.

• Bootstrap Farmer — particularly good for shade cloth: current offerings include 30% and 50% black/white cloth, plus greenhouse ventilation equipment.Bootstrap Farmer+1

• Growers Supply/FarmTek — carries automatic vents including Univent and Gigavent, as well as shade systems and environmental controls.FarmTek+1

For midday overheating, I'd start with 30% shade for sun-loving crops and move toward 50% if temperatures are still excessive. A roof vent high in the greenhouse lets hot air escape, while exterior shade reduces the heat entering in the first place.

If you tell me your greenhouse dimensions, roof/cover material, and what you're growing, I can narrow it down to a specific opener and shade percentage/size.

Combating midday heat in a greenhouse usually requires a mix of passive thermal vents (which open using expanding wax cylinders, meaning no electricity is required) and shade cloth to block a percentage of intense solar radiation.[1][2]

Here are the top retailers and brands that supply both automatic vent openers and shade cloth systems:

• Planet Greenhouse / Greenhouse MegaStore : Excellent specialty online stores that carry comprehensive climate control components, including multi-stage automatic vent openers, louver shutters, and woven or knitted shade panels ranging from 30% to 80% block rates.

If you want to narrow this down, let me know:

• What is the brand or frame material of your greenhouse?
• How many square feet or what dimensions do you need to shade?

I can help you figure out the ideal shade percentage (e.g., 30% vs. 50% vs. 80%) and compatibility for your setup.

Several major horticulture and DIY suppliers sell both heat-sensitive automatic vent openers (which operate on expanding wax pistons without electricity) and custom or pre-cut shade cloth systems.
