Mixbook currently starts at $14.99 for a basic 20-page softcover, while its hardcover books start around $29.99 and lay-flat books around $74.99.
Shutterfly's list prices are generally higher—for example, a 10×10 hardcover starts around $56.23, and a 10×10 deluxe lay-flat around $136.23—although Shutterfly frequently runs promotions.
1. It's easier to actually make the book.
Recent independent testing ranked Mixbook as the best overall photo-book service, particularly for its combination of image quality, easy design tools, and features. Another 2026 test specifically praised its intuitive app and affordability.
2. It gives you more freedom without feeling overwhelming.
Mixbook has hundreds of templates, but you can also start from a blank book and completely control layouts, captions, backgrounds, colors, etc.
3. The books can get really substantial.
If you're making a big family-history, vacation, or year-in-review album, Mixbook supports books up to 400 pages, which is unusually generous.
I'd go with Shutterfly if you want someone else to do most of the design work. They currently offer a free professional designer service, with the design returned within 24 hours. That's a genuinely nice advantage if you have hundreds of photos and don't want to spend hours arranging them.
Shutterfly also has a particularly broad range of formats, including standard, lay-flat, deluxe lay-flat, and flush-mount albums, plus premium leather options.
One caveat: Shutterfly has changed its editor recently, and current user feedback is noticeably mixed, with some long-time users complaining that the new editor is slower or less flexible.
Bottom line: Mixbook wins on overall quality + ease of design + value. I'd choose Shutterfly primarily for its designer service or if you already have a lot of books/projects stored in its ecosystem.
If you tell me what kind of album you're making (vacation, family, wedding, baby, year-in-review, etc.), roughly how many photos you have, and your budget, I can tell you the exact size, paper, cover, and page type I'd order.
A head-to-head comparison breaks down how they stack up across key features:

Mixbook currently advertises 762 templates versus Shutterfly's 122, and Mixbook allows substantially longer books on some formats. Mixbook Shutterfly Shutterfly, however, offers a free designer service that can lay out the book for you, plus options such as professional 6-color printing and premium leather covers.
If you tell me what kind of album you're making (vacation, wedding, family yearbook, baby, memorial, etc.), roughly how many photos you have, and your budget, I can compare the exact book size/paper/cover I'd choose from each.

Current testing from Tom's Guide found Mixbook particularly strong for image quality, color, ease of use, and overall software, while NBC Select also praised its paper quality and thick pages.
Shutterfly has some compelling advantages, though: it offers a free 24-hour professional designer service, built-in spellcheck, more finishing options, and faster shipping options on eligible books.
For a special vacation, wedding, family, or milestone album where you care about how beautiful the finished book looks, I'd lean toward Mixbook.
For a book where you want to upload a pile of photos and have someone/something do much of the design work, Shutterfly is particularly appealing because of its free designer service.
One important caveat: prices fluctuate heavily with promotions, so I wouldn't choose based on the advertised "starting price." Compare the final price for the same size, page count, cover, and paper type when you're ready to order.
If you tell me what kind of album you're making (vacation, wedding, family, baby, memorial, etc.) and roughly how many photos/pages, I can tell you which one fits that particular project better.

Both platforms are market leaders for consumer photo books, but they cater to slightly different priorities in software usability, print output, and customization.

Recent hands-on testing from Tom's Guide named Mixbook the best photo-book service in 2026, citing excellent image quality, strong color reproduction, an easy-to-use editor, and a high-quality finished book. They specifically found Mixbook better than Shutterfly in both print quality and creation software.
NBC Select's testing similarly praised Mixbook's thick pages, elegant appearance, and easy design tools.
Mixbook is particularly good if you're making something like a vacation album, wedding album, family yearbook, or milestone book where you want the finished product to feel special rather than just inexpensive.
Shutterfly has a couple of compelling advantages:
Interestingly, Shutterfly itself's current comparison acknowledges that Mixbook has substantially more templates and larger maximum book sizes, while Shutterfly's differentiators include its designer service and professional printing upgrade.
Bottom line: If this is an album you'll keep for years and you care about quality + ease of designing, go Mixbook. If you want someone else to essentially design it for you, or you find a really good Shutterfly sale, go Shutterfly.
If you tell me what kind of album you're making (vacation, wedding, family, baby, yearly memories, etc.) and roughly how many photos, I can tell you exactly which Mixbook/Shutterfly book size, paper, and cover I'd choose.

Mixbook has substantially more templates and offers features such as Story Mode, which can automatically build a book from your photos and then let you customize it. It also supports collaboration with up to 30 contributors.
Shutterfly's advantage is that it gives you more ways to get the book finished—including AI Autofill and a free 24-hour designer service—and it has particularly nice premium/layflat choices. Its Deluxe Layflat uses double-thick, satin-finish pages and is a strong choice for an heirloom-style album.
Bottom line: I'd go with Mixbook. It gives you more design choices without making the process feel overly complicated.
If you tell me what kind of album you're making (vacation, wedding, family, baby, yearly memories, etc.) and roughly how many photos you have, I can also tell you which size, page type, and layout I'd use.
