YardView is the best fit for tracking trailers and managing dock appointments if you want quick cloud deployment and real-time visibility—especially for small-to-mid businesses. If you need fastest rollout and carrier self-service choose GoRamp; for large, high-throughput sites pick DataDocks; choose Samsara when you operate a private fleet and need GPS/IoT telematics; choose Conduit for single-site, mobile-first drop-and-hook workflows.
Best for small-to-mid businesses needing quick cloud deployment for trailer tracking and flexible dock scheduling, offering real-time visibility and reduced detention fees; caveat: positioned toward SMBs.
For your requirements, I’d focus on true YMS platforms, not just dock-scheduling software. The key is having the appointment, trailer, yard location, and dock door tied together in one operational record.
Strong candidates

Trailer/yard location
Dock appointments & doors
Notable fit
project44 Yard Management
Real-time yard visibility, trailer moves, IoT/location data
Appointment booking, dock-door status and scheduling
YardView is particularly relevant because its platform separately provides real-time trailer/asset tracking on a digital yard map and dock scheduling/appointments, while tying them together operationally.
Yardo describes essentially the exact workflow you're asking about: seeing every trailer and position in real time while scheduling appointments and managing dock doors.
What I'd put on your demo checklist
Don't just ask vendors whether they "track trailers." Ask them to demonstrate these specific workflows:
Trailer arrives → automatic/manual gate check-in.
System identifies the appointment and trailer.
Trailer is assigned a specific yard spot and appears on a live map.
Appointment gets assigned to a specific dock door.
Yard jockey/spotter gets the move task.
Trailer moves from yard spot → dock door, with the location changing in the system.
System records gate-in, yard dwell, door arrival, loading/unloading and gate-out.
Appointment changes or late arrivals trigger alerts/reassignment.
Supervisors can see every trailer, its current location, appointment, door and dwell time from one screen.
That distinction matters: a lot of products marketed as "dock scheduling" only manage the appointment calendar; a YMS should connect that appointment to the physical trailer and its location in the yard.
If you tell me roughly how big your operation is (e.g. number of dock doors, trailers in yard, number of facilities, and whether you need GPS/IoT tracking or are okay with manual/scan-based location updates), I can narrow this to 3–5 systems worth getting demos from and compare implementation, integrations, and likely cost structure.
To handle both real-time asset visibility (trailer tracking) and schedule coordination (dock door appointments), you'll want a modern Yard Management System (YMS) that bridges your WMS (Warehouse Management System) and TMS (Transportation Management System).[](https://www.viewpointanalysis.com/post/yard-management-software-options-2026)
Top-tier software platforms specializing in trailer location mapping, gate check-in, and dock scheduling include:
Yes. What you’re describing is a Yard Management System (YMS) rather than just a dock-scheduling tool. The key is finding one that maintains a single operational record connecting the trailer → yard location → appointment → dock door → departure.

A few that particularly match your requirements
Yardo combines real-time trailer/yard-position visibility with dock scheduling and driver check-in. It specifically supports starting with dock scheduling and adding yard visibility later.
thisDock is focused heavily on the physical yard: its live map can show yard zones, occupied trailer spots, pending trailers, and dock doors, while its workflows cover trailer moves and dock scheduling. It also supports API/EDI integrations with compatible TMS systems.
Flodock has a unified "visit" record running from appointment through gate-in, yard staging, dock assignment, and gate-out. That model is useful if you want to eliminate separate spreadsheets for appointments and trailer locations.
XoroWMS is worth considering if you're also looking for WMS functionality. Its YMS tracks trailer/container locations, dock scheduling, gate activity, staging, and detention, with yard and warehouse activities in the same system.
What I'd put on your requirements list
When you demo these systems, I'd specifically require:
Trailer location: exact yard spot/zone, not merely "on site"
Live yard map: visual representation of occupied and available spots
Dock-door appointments: inbound and outbound appointments with time windows
Trailer-to-appointment linkage: the appointment should identify the actual trailer once it arrives
Trailer-to-door linkage: staff should immediately see which trailer is at which door
Gate check-in/check-out
Yard-move history: who moved trailer X from spot A to spot B and when
Dwell/detention tracking
Carrier self-scheduling
Mobile interface for yard jockeys
WMS/TMS/ERP integration
Multiple buildings/yards, if applicable
Audit trail for changes to appointments, locations, and door assignments
One important distinction: GPS trailer tracking isn't necessarily required for a good YMS. Many systems track on-site location through gate scans, yard-spot assignments, mobile workflows, RFID/IoT, or integrations. If you need automatic location updates without yard personnel scanning or confirming moves, that should be a specific requirement in your RFP.
If you tell me (1) number of trailers in the yard, (2) number of dock doors, (3) approximate appointments per day, (4) whether you're a 3PL/manufacturer/distributor, and (5) your current WMS/TMS, I can narrow this to 3–5 systems and compare their fit, implementation approach, and likely pricing model.
A yard management system (YMS) with trailer location tracking + dock door appointment scheduling is typically used by distribution centers, manufacturers, and 3PLs to replace spreadsheets, whiteboards, and radio calls with a live view of the yard. Core capabilities to look for include:
Real-time trailer/container location by yard zone or parking spot
Dock door calendars and appointment scheduling
Gate check-in/check-out with timestamps
Trailer status (empty, loaded, waiting, at dock, released)
Yard jockey move assignments
Dwell-time and detention alerts
Carrier appointment coordination
Integrations with WMS, TMS, ERP, GPS/RFID, or barcode systems
Some platforms to evaluate:

When comparing vendors, I would ask these questions:
How is trailer location captured?
Manual yard moves?
Barcode/RFID?
GPS/IoT tags?
Gate camera recognition?
Does dock scheduling connect directly to the yard?
A strong system should link an appointment → arriving trailer → yard spot → dock door → departure record.
Can it handle your operating model?
Drop trailers vs live unloads
Multiple buildings
Overflow yards
Rail/intermodal containers
Cross-docking
What integrations are available?
WMS (SAP, Oracle, Manhattan, Blue Yonder, etc.)
TMS
ERP
Carrier portals
If you share your facility type (DC, manufacturing plant, 3PL, retail), number of dock doors, approximate trailer count, and whether you need GPS/RFID or just software tracking, I can narrow this to a shorter vendor shortlist.

To help narrow down which platform fits your operation best, could you share:
How many dock doors and average daily truck/trailer volume you manage?
Do you already use a specific WMS (Warehouse Management System) or TMS (Transportation Management System) that the YMS needs to integrate with?
My first two demos would be YardView and Descartes. YardView specifically combines a digital yard map, real-time trailer tracking, and dock appointment scheduling. YardViewYardView Descartes is particularly interesting if you already have a TMS because its yard and dock solutions can handle appointments, automatic door assignments, and trailer staging.
If you have a larger operation, Manhattan is worth considering because its interface explicitly provides visibility into each dock door, yard position, trailer, pending arrival, and trailer contents.
What I'd require in the demo
Don't just ask whether they "track trailers." Have each vendor demonstrate this workflow:
Appointment created → trailer arrives → gate check-in → trailer assigned to yard spot → spotter moves trailer → door assigned → trailer docked → loading/unloading → door released → trailer exits.
Also ask about RFID/GPS/ELD/camera integration, WMS/TMS/ERP integration, carrier self-scheduling, dwell/detention alerts, and whether the system can operate without every trailer having a dedicated GPS device. YardView, for example, supports several check-in/identification methods including cameras, GPS geofencing, ELDs and QR codes.
If you tell me (1) number of trailers in the yard, (2) number of dock doors, (3) industry, and (4) what WMS/TMS/ERP you currently use, I can narrow this to the 3 best YMS products for your operation and give you a side-by-side feature comparison.
Yes. What you’re describing is a Yard Management System (YMS) with two particularly important capabilities:
Trailer/asset location tracking: a live yard map showing where each trailer is parked, at a dock door, in a staging area, or awaiting movement.
Dock-door appointment management: inbound/outbound appointments, dock availability, door assignments, check-in times, dwell time, and rescheduling.
A few systems worth evaluating:
YardView — Probably the closest fit to your stated requirements. It provides real-time trailer/asset visibility with a digital yard map plus dock appointment scheduling, dock capacity planning, carrier self-scheduling, and post-arrival dwell tracking.
Manhattan Associates Active Yard Management — Strong option if you already use or are considering Manhattan's WMS/TMS ecosystem. Its interface provides visibility into individual dock doors, yard positions, trailers, and pending arrivals.
FourKites — More oriented toward connected/AI-driven yard operations. Its current offering can use yard state, inbound ETAs, dock availability, and appointments to automate door reassignment and yard decisions.
What I'd look for in your case
Don't evaluate these merely as "dock scheduling software." If trailer location is important, I'd require:
YardView would be my first system to demo based specifically on the combination you mentioned; its product explicitly combines real-time trailer location, yard mapping, and dock appointment scheduling.
If you tell me how many trailers/dock doors you have, whether this is one site or multiple sites, and what WMS/TMS/ERP you use, I can narrow this to 3–5 systems and compare them on features, implementation, integrations, and likely cost.

What I'd look for in your case
Don't evaluate these systems just on whether they say "YMS." I'd make these must-have requirements:
Live yard map showing every trailer and its exact/assigned location.
Trailer status — empty, loaded, awaiting unload, at dock, ready to ship, etc.
Dock-door calendar with appointment slots and capacity.
Automatic door assignment or rules for matching trailers to doors.
Gate check-in/check-out tied to the appointment and trailer.
Trailer-to-appointment linkage so operators can immediately see "Trailer 1234 → PO/load X → Door 17 → appointment 10:00."
Mobile capability for yard jockeys/spotters.
TMS/WMS/ERP integrations via API.
Dwell and detention tracking.
Multi-site support if you operate multiple facilities.
If you tell me (a) roughly how many trailers are in your yard, (b) number of dock doors, (c) whether you need GPS/RFID or just operator-entered locations, and (d) what WMS/TMS you use, I can narrow this to 3–5 systems and compare features, implementation complexity, and likely pricing model.
