How to narrow the list

When evaluating firms, I’d look for:

• Portfolio match: Have they built exhibits similar to yours (history, science, children’s, art, cultural heritage)?
• Technology depth: Do they develop custom software, or only integrate hardware?
• Maintenance plan: Interactive exhibits need long-term support, updates, and replacement planning.
• Visitor experience approach: Technology should reinforce the story rather than become the attraction itself.
• Scale: Some firms excel at a single gallery installation; others handle entire museums.

If you share your museum type, location, approximate exhibit size/budget, and whether you need a full-service designer or just an interactive technology partner, I can narrow this to a shorter list.

How I'd narrow the search

If you tell me (1) where the museum is located, (2) approximate exhibit size/budget, and (3) what technology you envision—for example touchscreens, projection mapping, AR/VR, interactive physical objects, AI, or immersive environments—I can put together a shortlist of 5–8 firms with relevant projects, websites, and contact information.

• Metcalfe Architecture & Design - 234 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19106, United States
• Interactive Mechanics - 219 Cuthbert St #402, Philadelphia, PA 19106, United States

If you’re looking in or around Philadelphia, there are several firms worth considering. The right choice depends on whether you need a full exhibit designer or primarily a technology/interactive partner.

• Metcalfe Architecture & Design — Philadelphia-based exhibition and experience-design firm. Its museum work combines exhibit design with multimedia storytelling and interpretive environments.
• Interactive Mechanics — Philadelphia digital-experience studio with museum and cultural-institution experience, including interactive museum work.

Firms farther afield

A few national firms also stand out:

• Quatrefoil — exhibition and experience design with digital and tactile interactives for museums, science centers, zoos, and cultural sites.Quatrefoil
• Roto — full-service museum/exhibition design-build firm covering concept through production and installation, with a strong emphasis on interactive and immersive experiences.Roto

• Exhibitry — full-service interactive exhibit fabrication and digital-production studio using technologies such as holograms, transparent touchscreens, and projection mapping.Exhibitry

If your project is in the Philadelphia region, I'd start by talking with Greenhouse Media, Metcalfe, and Interactive Mechanics because they cover complementary parts of the exhibit-design/interactive-technology spectrum.

If you tell me what kind of museum, approximate exhibit size/budget, and whether you need design + fabrication + technology all under one contract, I can narrow this to 3–5 firms and compare their capabilities and relevant projects.

If you’re looking for a museum exhibit design firm that combines traditional exhibition design with interactive technology, these firms are worth considering. The best fit depends on whether you need a full museum build, a digital interactive partner, immersive media, or fabrication support.

Questions to ask when selecting a firm

1. Do they design the visitor experience first, or start with technology? Strong firms typically use technology to support the story rather than make the technology the attraction.
2. Can they handle the full lifecycle?

• Concept and interpretive planning
• UX/UI design
• Hardware selection
• Software development
• Fabrication
• Installation
• Maintenance and content updates

3. What interactive technologies do they have experience with?

• Multi-touch tables and walls
• Projection mapping
• AR/VR
• Motion tracking
• RFID/mobile interaction
• AI-driven guides
• Interactive artifacts and sensors

If you share your museum type (history, science, art, children’s, corporate visitor center, etc.), location, project size, and whether you need a full exhibit or just interactive technology, I can narrow this to a shorter list of firms that fit.
