Telmex’s Infinitum service is generally reliable enough for everyday use, but compared with other major Mexican providers it tends to be middle-of-the-pack rather than a clear leader. The biggest factor is what type of Telmex connection you get at your address: fiber optic (FTTH) is usually much better than older copper/DSL service.

Telmex’s Infinitum is the backbone of Mexican telecommunications. Its reliability varies enormously depending on whether you have fiber-optic (FTTH) or legacy copper/DSL infrastructure, as well as your specific neighborhood.[](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMexico/comments/1fbn1v1/cu%C3%A1l_es_el_mejor_proveedor_de_internet/)[[2](https://old.markerdb.ca/ccd/top-internet-providers-in-mexico-your-ultimate-guide)](https://old.markerdb.ca/ccd/top-internet-providers-in-mexico-your-ultimate-guide)
When stacked against major competitors like Totalplay, Izzi (Televisa) , and Megacable , Telmex occupies a unique space: rock-solid core stability on fiber, but tempered by bureaucratic customer service and wildly hyper-local performance differences.[](https://www.reddit.com/r/ayudamexico/comments/1nk8x6z/telmex_vs_izzi_vs_megacable_vs_totalplay_cu%C3%A1l_es/?tl=en)[[2](https://old.markerdb.ca/ccd/top-internet-providers-in-mexico-your-ultimate-guide)](https://www.reddit.com/r/ayudamexico/comments/1nk8x6z/telmex_vs_izzi_vs_megacable_vs_totalplay_cu%C3%A1l_es/)[[3](https://www.reddit.com/r/ayudamexico/comments/1nk8x6z)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMexico/comments/1fbn1v1/cu%C3%A1l_es_el_mejor_proveedor_de_internet/)

Ultimately, the "best" provider in Mexico is hyper-local. A flawless Telmex fiber line in one colonia might be a nightmare two neighborhoods over due to an overloaded local node or damaged infrastructure.[](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMexico/comments/1fbn1v1/cu%C3%A1l_es_el_mejor_proveedor_de_internet/)[[2](https://old.markerdb.ca/ccd/top-internet-providers-in-mexico-your-ultimate-guide)](https://www.facebook.com/groups/SanCarlosForum/posts/4313527745601167/)
To help narrow down if Infinitum is right for your situation, tell me:
I can give you a better idea of local consensus for that area!
Telmex’s Infinitum is generally a solid fixed-internet option in Mexico, but its reliability varies substantially by neighborhood and, especially, by whether your address has Telmex fiber rather than older copper/DSL infrastructure.
| Provider | Reliability considerations |
|---|---|
| Telmex / Infinitum | Fiber service can be very stable; older copper/DSL connections are more variable. Telmex has a large network footprint, but customer complaints and support-response times are a recurring issue. |
| Totalplay | Fiber-to-the-home in many areas, generally good performance. The IFT's 2025 complaint data showed Totalplay with the highest number of complaints per 100,000 fixed-internet subscribers, though this metric doesn't directly measure outage frequency. |
| Izzi | Often a reasonable alternative where available; network technology varies by location, so local performance matters considerably. |
| Megacable | Can be good where its newer fiber network is available; performance is more location-dependent in areas using older cable infrastructure. |
| Smaller/local fiber ISPs | Sometimes excellent in their coverage areas, particularly if they have modern FTTH, but support and network redundancy vary. |
One useful objective data point is the Mexican telecom regulator's 2025 plan comparison: 100% of Telmex/Telnor's listed single-play fixed-internet plans were above 50 Mbps, whereas all of Izzi's listed plans were in the 10–50 Mbps category at the time of that comparison. That's about advertised offerings, though—not uptime.
If Telmex tells you that your address has fibra óptica, I'd view Infinitum quite differently from an address served over old copper.
Fiber generally gives you:
The IFT's 2025 data confirms that Telmex/Telnor was offering fixed plans from 60 Mbps through 750 Mbps, with all of its analyzed single-play plans above 50 Mbps.
Current crowdsourced outage data shouldn't be treated as a scientific uptime measurement, but it does provide a useful warning signal. Downdetector currently shows no widespread Telmex problem, while recent user reports include localized outages, latency and Wi-Fi problems.
More importantly, the IFT's Soy Usuario system shows that Telmex generated the largest absolute number of telecommunications complaints among the companies analyzed in Q2 2025. However, when normalized specifically to fixed-internet subscribers, Totalplay had the highest number of complaints; so raw complaint counts shouldn't be interpreted as Telmex having the worst internet reliability.
If you're choosing between providers, I'd put much more weight on the technology available at your particular address than on the Telmex brand itself.
If your Telmex option is FTTH fiber, Infinitum is a perfectly reasonable candidate and can be very reliable. If it's ADSL/VDSL over copper, I'd investigate Totalplay, fiber Izzi/Megacable, or a local FTTH provider before committing.
If you tell me the city/colonia in Mexico and the providers you're considering, I can compare the available options there—including reported outages, technology (fiber vs. cable/DSL), speeds, pricing and customer-complaint data.
Telmex Infinitum is reasonably reliable, but recent nationwide measurements put it behind Totalplay for consistency/reliability.
Bottom line: If your Infinitum connection is FTTH fiber, it's generally a solid service. If it's DSL/copper, I'd expect more variability and would compare available fiber alternatives at your specific address.
Telmex’s Infinitum service is historically the backbone of Mexican telecommunications. Its reliability varies significantly depending on whether your local neighborhood has been upgraded to fiber-optic (FTTH) or is still running on legacy copper telephone lines.[](https://www.ookla.com/articles/mexico-fiber-fan-experience)
A breakdown of how Telmex Infinitum compares to major competitors like Totalplay and Izzi reveals distinct differences in performance and reliability:
If you'd like to narrow this down, tell me:
I can give you a better idea of which provider dominates stability in that specific area.
Telmex’s Infinitum is generally a solid, dependable choice in Mexico, but it is no longer the clear performance leader. The biggest factor is what type of connection Telmex can give you at your specific address—fiber (FTTH) is substantially preferable to older copper/DSL service.
The latest nationwide independent performance data I found, from nPerf’s 2025 Mexico fixed-internet measurements, ranks the major providers roughly like this:
| Provider | Download | Upload | Latency | Overall nPerf score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Totalplay | 204 Mbps | 144 Mbps | 25 ms | 119,545 |
| Megacable | 118 Mbps | 77 Mbps | 15 ms | 114,999 |
| Telmex | 109 Mbps | 91 Mbps | 47 ms | 95,616 |
| izzi | 76 Mbps | 31 Mbps | 62 ms | 79,883 |
nPerfSo, for raw performance, Totalplay currently has the edge, followed by Megacable. Telmex is respectable, particularly for upload speeds, but its overall performance trails those two.
This is where I'd be more cautious.
In the IFT's second-quarter 2025 Soy Usuario data, Telmex had the largest absolute number of complaints among providers. However, that's partly a consequence of its enormous customer base. When normalized by fixed-internet subscribers, Totalplay had the highest complaint rate for fixed internet in that report. Telmex also had the longest average response time among the major providers, at 5.9 business days.
So I wouldn't interpret "Telmex has the most complaints" as "Telmex is the least reliable." The denominator matters.
If all four were available at comparable prices and all offered fiber, I'd roughly choose:
That's a national-level comparison, though. In Mexico, the neighborhood-level difference can be enormous. A mediocre Telmex connection can be worse than an excellent Totalplay connection—or vice versa.
One interesting point: in 2024's nPerf results, Telmex actually led the FTTH providers for web browsing and video streaming, even though Totalplay had the best overall FTTH performance. nPerf That illustrates why advertised speed alone isn't a great measure of reliability.
Bottom line: If the Telmex service offered at your address is fiber, I'd consider Infinitum a good-to-very-good option, not something I'd avoid. If it's copper/DSL, I'd strongly investigate Totalplay, Megacable, or another fiber provider first.
If you tell me the Mexican city/municipality (and optionally your neighborhood/colonia), I can compare the providers available there and tell you which is likely to be the most reliable.
One interesting point: in 2024's nPerf results, Telmex actually led the FTTH providers for web browsing and video streaming, even though Totalplay had the best overall FTTH performance. That illustrates why advertised speed alone isn't a great measure of reliability.
Telmex's Infinitum is the heavyweight champion of broadband in Mexico, holding roughly a 40% market share. Its reliability has evolved dramatically over recent years, primarily due to an aggressive push to modernize its infrastructure.[](https://telecomlead.com/broadband/best-isp-in-mexico-2026-telmex-leads-broadband-market-as-totalplay-delivers-fastest-fiber-speeds-126546)
A breakdown of how Telmex Infinitum stacks up against major competitors like Totalplay, izzi , and Megacable reveals key performance differences:
Overall, Telmex Infinitum over fiber is just as reliable as Totalplay or izzi, and often superior in terms of raw connection uptime. The golden rule in Mexico remains hyper-local: a great provider on paper can struggle if the local node in your specific neighborhood is overloaded or poorly maintained.
To give you the most accurate picture for your situation, could you share:
Telmex’s Infinitum service remains the massive backbone of Mexico’s internet infrastructure, but its reliability depends heavily on whether you are connected via their legacy copper lines or their newer fiber-optic (FTTH) network. [](https://www.ookla.com/articles/mexico-fiber-h1-2025)
Recent network performance evaluations (such as the Opensignal Fixed Broadband Experience Report for Mexico ) place Infinitum in a fierce race against major competitors like Totalplay, Megacable, and izzi. [](https://insights.opensignal.com/reports/2026/04/mexico/fixed-broadband-experience)
If you want to narrow this down for your specific situation, tell me:
I can give you a better idea of how it stacks up locally against local competitors.
Telmex’s Infinitum is generally a solid, widely available service, but its reliability depends heavily on whether your address is served by fiber or older copper/DSL infrastructure. Compared with other major Mexican providers, I’d put it in the middle of the pack for reliability, rather than clearly first.
One useful benchmark is the Mexican regulator's complaint data. In Q1 2025, Telmex had the highest number of internet-fixed complaints per 100,000 subscribers among the major providers; in Q2, Totalplay moved into the top spot for fixed-internet complaints. IFT IFT This suggests that Telmex isn't an obvious reliability leader, but it also doesn't mean that a typical Telmex connection is frequently down—the figures measure reported complaints, not uptime.
If you're considering Infinitum, I would choose Telmex fiber without much hesitation if the alternative is Telmex copper.
The IFT's 2025 market data confirms that Telmex/Telnor remains one of the largest fixed-network operators in Mexico, and its 2025 plan comparison shows Telmex/Telnor offering seven fixed-internet plans.
So my rough ranking would be:
| Service at your address | Reliability |
|---|---|
| Telmex fiber | 🟢 Good–very good |
| Totalplay fiber | 🟢 Good–very good |
| Izzi fiber/coax | 🟢 Good |
| Megacable fiber/coax | 🟡 Good–variable |
| Telmex copper/DSL | 🟠 Variable–poor |
Bottom line: Don't judge Infinitum solely by Telmex's national reputation. The technology and local infrastructure at your specific address matter more than the brand. A Telmex fiber connection can be considerably more dependable than a poorly maintained connection from another provider.
If you tell me the city/colonia in Mexico (no exact address needed), I can compare Telmex vs. Totalplay vs. Izzi vs. Megacable specifically for that area, including typical speeds, fiber availability, and reliability indicators.
| Good , though local node congestion can cause minor slowdowns during peak hours. |
| Moderate; widely accessible with standard localized support. |
| Megacable | Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (Cable) | Moderate , with occasional packet loss or localized outages during high-traffic evening hours. | Varies heavily by region/state. |
| Good |
| Customer Support | Slow / Bureaucratic | Moderate | Faster response |
| Geographic Reach | Massive (National) | Urban-focused | Regional-focused |
