Airbnb typically provides more consistent, guest-friendly cancellation options with standardized windows like 24-hour full refunds. In contrast, Vrbo allows hosts to set more varied and restrictive policies, which may include longer-notice requirements or no-refund terms for large properties. Always review the specific policy listed on any rental property page before booking, as terms vary by the individual host.

The two platforms are similar in principle: the guest’s refund depends heavily on the cancellation policy attached to the specific listing, but Airbnb’s current standard policies are somewhat more standardized, while gives hosts a broader menu of fixed refund windows.

The biggest difference is that Airbnb now has more standardized cancellation rules, while generally gives hosts more control over the cancellation policy attached to each property.

Airbnb (Firm/Strict): Firm allows a full refund up to 30 days before check-in. Strict gives a 48-hour grace period after booking if booked 28+ days out, but no standard full refunds close to check-in.
VRBO: Governed by their Extenuating Circumstances framework. Historically, VRBO has occasionally provided slightly more latitude for sudden, official changes to passport or visa entry requirements compared to Airbnb's stricter geographic/event limitations.[](https://www.independent.co.uk/us/money/airbnb-vrbo-guest-rights-travel-b2997810.html)
4. Refund Processing Speed
Community experiences and platform data indicate that Airbnb tends to process and return funds to the original payment method slightly faster (averaging around 5 to 7 business days) compared to VRBO , which can occasionally take up to a few days longer depending on the banking institution.[](https://highratedshopper.com/airbnb-vs-vrbo/)

For stays under 28 nights, standard policies currently include full-refund windows of 24 hours before check-in (Flexible), 5 days (Moderate), 14 days (Limited), or 30 days (Firm).
Partial refunds
Some Airbnb policies provide a 50% refund if cancellation occurs within a specified intermediate window.
Fees
A "full refund" generally includes taxes, but refundability of Airbnb guest/service fees depends on the circumstances.
Exceptions
Airbnb can provide refunds outside the normal policy for qualifying major disruptive events or serious problems with the property.
After booking
For most shorter stays, Airbnb currently provides a 24-hour cancellation period for a full refund if the reservation was made at least 7 days before check-in.
The practical difference
If you're a guest, the key distinction is that Airbnb currently gives most qualifying short-stay bookings a 24-hour post-booking cancellation window, while Vrbo generally leaves the refund schedule to the host's selected policy.
After that initial period, neither platform has one universal refund rule. You need to look at the cancellation policy attached to the particular property before booking.
One additional wrinkle: Airbnb offers an Extended Cancellation option for qualifying U.S. listings that can provide a full refund if purchased and exercised up to 24 hours before check-in.
If you give me a specific Airbnb and Vrbo cancellation policy (or screenshots of the two listings), I can calculate exactly what a guest would get back if they cancel, for example, 60, 30, 14, 7, or 2 days before check-in.

Airbnb
Vrbo
Full-refund windows
Standard policies currently include Flexible (24 hours before check-in), Moderate (5 days), Limited (14 days), and Firm (30 days).
Partial refunds
Limited and Firm provide a 50% refund in certain cancellation windows; Flexible and Moderate use different formulas based on how close cancellation is to check-in.
Service/platform fee
Airbnb service fees are refunded when the guest cancels during the applicable free-cancellation period.
Exceptional circumstances
Airbnb can override the host's cancellation policy for covered listing problems or qualifying Major Disruptive Events.
24-hour booking grace period
For standard stays under 28 nights, Airbnb gives a full-refund cancellation period of 24 hours after booking if the booking was made at least 7 days before check-in.
The practical difference
Airbnb has a more standardized baseline for ordinary short stays, including the 24-hour post-booking grace period and standardized Flexible/Moderate/Limited/Firm policies.
Vrbo gives hosts a somewhat broader range of cancellation windows, notably a 60-day full-refund option and several intermediate 50%-refund structures.
So, for a specific booking, the important thing isn't simply "Airbnb vs. Vrbo"—it's the cancellation policy attached to that particular listing, plus whether you're canceling before or after the relevant deadline.
If you give me an example such as “$2,000 booking, 10 days before check-in”, I can show exactly what the guest would typically get back on Airbnb versus Vrbo.
Airbnb: Features a standardized 24-hour grace period for many bookings. If a guest books at least 7 days before check-in, they can cancel within 24 hours of booking for a complete, automatic 100% refund.[](https://www.keycafe.com/s/blog/airbnb-cancellation-policy-guide)
Airbnb: Relies on clear-cut standardized tiers for short-term stays (such as Flexible, Moderate, Firm , and Strict ) where refund thresholds (e.g., full refund up to 5 days or 30 days out) are rigidly applied by the platform.[](https://www.keycafe.com/s/blog/airbnb-cancellation-policy-guide)
VRBO: Offers its own distinct tiers (ranging from Relaxed and Moderate to Firm and Strict/No Refund ), which often feature broader custom windows. For example, VRBO's Firm tier typically gives a 100% refund up to 60 days before check-in and a 50% refund between 30–60 days, which can be substantially less forgiving further out than Airbnb equivalents. VRBO also allows hosts to apply seasonal overrides.[](https://help.vrbo.com/articles/what-are-the-cancellation-policy-options)[[2]()]()
3. Service Fee Refunds
Airbnb: Service fee refund rules depend on timing and frequency of cancellations, but generally refund the guest service fee only if they cancel within the free cancellation window of a flexible policy.
Airbnb: Uses a global Major Disruptive Events Policy (which replaced older extenuating circumstance guidelines). If a large-scale, unforeseen event like a government travel ban, natural disaster, or public health emergency legally prohibits travel to the destination, Airbnb steps in to override the host's strict policy, granting cash or travel credit refunds directly.
VRBO: Features an Extenuating Circumstances Policy for wide-scale qualifying disruptions that legally prevent travel or hosting, but historically leaves a higher burden of direct communication/coordination between the guest and host. VRBO leans heavily on independent travel insurance policies; if a traveler purchased independent trip protection, they often have to file a separate claim with an external insurer (like Generali) rather than receiving an automatic platform-backed bailout for personal emergencies.[](https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1320)[[2](https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/4118)](https://www..com/help/article/4118)[[3]()](]()](]()](]()]()

While both platforms allow hosts to choose from a tiered set of cancellation templates, the underlying structures, grace periods, and baseline levels of flexibility differ significantly for travelers seeking refunds.
Core Differences in Refund Policies
Grace Periods: Airbnb offers a free 48-hour grace period for cancellations on most reservations made at least 14 days before check-in. Vrbo does not mandate a universal platform-wide free grace period; cancellations are bound strictly to the individual host's chosen policy from the moment of booking. [](https://www.hostfully.com/blog/vrbo-cancellation-policy/)
Service Fee Refunds: Airbnb refunds its guest service fee if the cancellation happens during the free cancellation period or if the host cancels. Vrbo's handling of administrative and service fees varies by policy type and often retains service fees upon guest cancellation. [](https://www.hometime.io/blog/airbnb-booking-vrbo-stayz-cancellation-policies)
Extenuating Circumstances: Both platforms maintain policies for major unexpected events (such as natural disasters or government travel restrictions), but Airbnb tends to apply its policy more uniformly across platform-wide disruptions, whereas Vrbo handles severe weather and emergencies strictly on an individual, evidence-reviewed case basis. Standard short stays generally have a 24-hour post-booking cancellation period if booked at least 7 days before check-in. Depending on the host’s policy, full refunds can also be available up to 24 hours, 5 days, 14 days, or 30 days before check-in.
Partial refunds
Airbnb's Limited and Firm policies can provide 50% of the booking amount during specified cancellation windows.
Fees/taxes
Refund treatment can differ for Airbnb service fees, cleaning fees, and taxes; the exact refund is shown before cancellation.
Problems with the property
Airbnb has separate rebooking/refund protections that can override the host's normal cancellation policy in qualifying cases.
Bottom line
Airbnb tends to be more guest-friendly and predictable for ordinary short stays, particularly because of its standardized 24-hour post-booking cancellation period and clearly defined current policies.
Vrbo can be either more or less generous depending on the host's chosen policy. Its range goes from a relatively flexible “Day-before” policy (100% refund until 24 hours before check-in) all the way to “No refund,” so you need to inspect the individual listing's policy carefully.
One important caveat: the policy attached to the specific reservation controls. So if you're comparing two particular bookings, the listing's displayed cancellation terms are more important than the platform's general policy.
Airbnb’s available policy options, selected by the host
Full refund
Commonly available if canceled within the applicable window; standard short stays also get a 24-hour grace period if booked at least 7 days before check-in
Partial refund
Some policies provide 50% refunds when canceled within certain windows
Late cancellation
Can result in only taxes being refunded or no meaningful refund, depending on the policy
Service fee
Refunded when the cancellation qualifies for a refund under the applicable rules
Host/listing problems
Airbnb has a separate rebooking/refund process that can override the cancellation policy
For Airbnb, the current standard policies for stays under 28 nights include Flexible, Moderate, Limited, and Firm. For example, a Flexible reservation can generally be canceled up to 24 hours before check-in for a full refund, while a Firm reservation generally provides a full refund up to 30 days before check-in and a 50% refund between 7 and 30 days.
Vrbo is more listing-specific. Its own help information confirms that the service fee is refunded when a reservation is canceled within the property's window for a 100% refund. Individual Vrbo rental agreements can set very different deadlines—for example, one current agreement provides a full refund more than 30 days out, 50% within 14–30 days, and no refund inside 14 days.
Bottom line
For guests, Airbnb is generally more predictable, particularly because of its standardized policies and 24-hour cancellation period for qualifying short stays. Vrbo can be just as generous—or much stricter—but you need to inspect the individual property's cancellation policy carefully.
One important caveat: both platforms can make exceptions for major events or serious problems with the property, so the normal cancellation policy isn't necessarily the final word. Airbnb explicitly allows its refund/rebooking policies to override the host's cancellation policy in qualifying situations.
If you give me a specific Airbnb and Vrbo cancellation policy (or screenshots), I can compare exactly how much you'd get back at different cancellation dates.
Airbnb: The guest service fee is only refunded if you cancel before the free cancellation period ends for that specific booking, or if the host agrees to a full refund post-cancellation. [](https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/1345)
Airbnb: Typically features a free 48-hour cancellation grace period for bookings made at least 14 days prior to check-in, regardless of the host's strictness tier (though terms apply).
Vrbo: Handles extraordinary events on a more case-by-case basis or relies heavily on whether the guest purchased optional travel insurance during checkout.

Both platforms let the host/property owner choose the cancellation policy, so the exact guest refund depends on the listing. But there are some important differences.
Airbnb
Vrbo
Typical policy structure
Flexible, Moderate, Limited, Firm, plus some stricter/invitation-only options
Full-refund window
Depending on policy, from 24 hours before check-in to 30+ days before
Partial refunds
Several policies provide a 50% refund during a defined window
24-hour booking cancellation
Generally a full refund if booked at least 7 days before check-in
Service/booking fees
Refund treatment varies; Airbnb says a "full refund" includes taxes, while guest fees can depend on circumstances
Major disruptions
Airbnb can override the listing policy in qualifying cases
Airbnb's current policies for stays under 28 nights include Flexible (full refund until 24 hours before check-in), Moderate (full refund until 5 days before), Limited (full refund until 14 days before, then 50% until 7 days), and Firm (full refund until 30 days, then 50% until 7 days).
Vrbo is somewhat more granular. Its current options include Day-before (100% until 24 hours before), Lenient (100% until 5 days), Relaxed (100% until 14 days/50% at 7–14 days), Moderate (100% until 30 days/50% at 14–30 days), and Firm (100% until 60 days/50% at 30–60 days).
Bottom line
For guests, neither platform is universally more generous. Airbnb tends to have a particularly useful 24-hour post-booking cancellation protection for qualifying reservations, while Vrbo offers policies with longer advance cancellation windows—up to 60 days for a full refund.
One other distinction: on Vrbo, the property's cancellation policy is explicitly part of the Travel Provider's rules, and Vrbo's terms say the provider's policy determines what you're refunded.
If you're deciding which platform is safer for a guest booking, I'd lean Airbnb for flexibility in many ordinary short stays, but Vrbo can be better if the particular property has a generous 30- or 60-day policy.
While both Airbnb and Vrbo allow individual hosts to choose from a tiered structure of cancellation policies, there are distinct structural differences in how they handle grace periods, refund timelines, and platform fees.
Structure and Tiers of Cancellation Policies
Both platforms leave the choice of policy up to the host, but their standard frameworks differ in flexibility:
Airbnb Tiers: Generally categorized into Flexible, Moderate, Firm , and legacy Strict (grandfathered for older hosts).
Flexible: Full refund up to 24 hours before check-in.
Moderate: Full refund up to 5 days before check-in.
Vrbo: Does not have a universal platform-wide 24-hour grace period for all bookings; guest refunds rely strictly on the specific tier chosen by the host from the moment the reservation is locked in. [](https://www.hostfully.com/blog/vrbo-cancellation-policy/)
Platform Service Fee Refunds
Airbnb: If a guest cancels within a refundable window, Airbnb typically refunds its guest service fee. However, if a guest has multiple cancellations or cancels outside the refund window, the service fee is often retained.
Airbnb: Operates under a Major Disruptive Events Policy (formerly Extenuating Circumstances) which overrides individual host policies during large-scale unforeseen emergencies (e.g., government travel restrictions, natural disasters, or infrastructure failures).
