How do I talk to my teenager about responsible social media use?

The goal is less “control their phone” and more teach them how to make good decisions when you aren't there. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends ongoing conversations and a family media plan tailored to the individual teen rather than a one-size-fits-all screen-time rule.HealthyChildren.org+1

Start with curiosity, not a lecture

Try something like:

“I know social media is a big part of how you stay connected. I don't want to spy on you or tell you that everything online is bad. I want us to figure out how you can use it in a way that's good for you—and know what to do when something goes wrong.” Then ask:

• “What do you actually like about social media?”
• “What parts ever make you feel stressed, left out, angry, or bad about yourself?”
• “Have you ever seen something online that you weren't sure how to handle?”
• “What do you think parents misunderstand about social media?”

Listening first makes it much more likely that they'll come to you later.

Focus on a few practical principles

1. Protect privacy. Talk about what information should stay private, who can see posts, location sharing, passwords, and the fact that disappearing messages or private accounts aren't guarantees of privacy.HealthyChildren.org

2. Pause before posting. A useful rule is: “If you'd be uncomfortable with a teacher, grandparent, or future employer seeing it, don't post it.” Also teach them never to forward someone else's photo or private message without permission.

3. Don't let the feed determine their mood. Social media can provide connection and support, but research suggests that how teens use it matters, not simply the number of minutes spent online. HealthyChildren.org Ask your teen to notice: “Do I usually feel better, worse, or about the same after scrolling?”

4. Have boundaries around sleep and school. The AAP recommends screen-free times and places, including during homework and before bed, and suggests keeping devices out of bedrooms at night.HealthyChildren.org+1

5. Know what to do when something goes wrong. Make it explicit: if they're bullied, threatened, pressured for a sexual image, contacted by a stranger, or exposed to disturbing content, coming to you won't automatically mean losing their phone. You want them to seek help rather than hide the problem.

Make the rules collaborative

Instead of announcing ten restrictions, say:

“Let's come up with three or four rules that protect sleep, school, privacy, and your relationships. I'll follow the same basic principles.” The AAP specifically recommends that parents model the behavior they expect from their children and revisit the family media plan as children mature.HealthyChildren.org

One particularly useful family rule is “we can always talk about something that happened online without getting in trouble for telling the truth.”

And remember that social media isn't inherently all good or all bad. It can provide connection, information, creativity and community, while also presenting risks; the U.S. Surgeon General has said the available evidence does not establish social media as sufficiently safe for children and adolescents, which is a reason for thoughtful guidance rather than panic.hhs.gov

The goal is less “How do I stop my teen from using social media?” and more “How do I help them become capable of managing it themselves?” The American Psychological Association recommends combining boundaries with ongoing discussion and coaching, especially during early adolescence.American Psychological Association+1

Start with curiosity, not a lecture

Pick a calm moment—not immediately after you catch them doing something you dislike—and ask questions such as:

• “What do you actually like about social media?”
• “Which apps make you feel good afterward, and which ones don't?”
• “Do you ever feel pressure to post, respond, or keep up?”
• “What would you do if someone sent you something disturbing?”
• “What do you think is okay to share, and what should stay private?”
• “Are there things online that you'd be uncomfortable telling me about?”

Listen before giving advice. You may learn that the issue isn't simply “too much screen time”—it might be friendship, FOMO, comparison, bullying, entertainment, or wanting independence.

Talk about a few concrete principles

Rather than giving 20 rules, focus on:

• Protect privacy. Don't share passwords, location, intimate images, or identifying information casually. Remind them that “disappearing” content can still be saved or shared.HealthyChildren.org
• Think before posting. Ask: Would I be okay with this being seen by my teacher, future employer, or family?
• Treat people like people. Don't post something about someone that you wouldn't say to their face.
• Question what they see. Likes, followers, edited photos, algorithms, and viral posts aren't reliable measures of truth or popularity. Developing media literacy is specifically recommended by the APA.American Psychological Association
• Notice how it makes them feel. If an account consistently produces anxiety, envy, anger, or pressure, unfollowing or muting it is a healthy choice.
• Protect sleep and real-life activities. Social media shouldn't routinely crowd out sleep, exercise, schoolwork, or face-to-face relationships.American Psychological Association+1

Make the rules collaborative

Instead of announcing, “You're allowed 90 minutes a day,” try:

“Let's figure out some rules that protect your sleep, school, and privacy while still giving you room to have a social life.” Then agree on things like no phones during meals, homework, or at bedtime, where devices charge overnight, what kinds of content require an adult's help, and what happens if something goes wrong. The AAP recommends a family media plan that applies thoughtfully to both teens and parents—and is revisited as circumstances change.AAP Publications+1

For younger teens, more active parental monitoring is generally recommended; as they demonstrate good judgment and digital-literacy skills, you can gradually give them more autonomy.American Psychological Association

Make one promise especially clear

Tell them:

“If something scary, embarrassing, sexual, threatening, or harmful happens online, you can come to me. My first job will be to help you—not to immediately punish you.”

That doesn't mean there are never consequences. It means they know that asking for help won't make the situation worse.

And model the behavior yourself. Teens notice whether adults put their phones away during conversations and family time; the AAP specifically emphasizes parental modeling.HealthyChildren.org

A good conversation can be as simple as: “I'm not trying to control your entire online life. I want to help you get good at managing it before you're completely on your own.”

Talking with a teenager about social media works best when it feels like a conversation about their world—not a lecture about rules. Teens are often more willing to share when they feel heard and when the goal is problem-solving together.Psicología Hoy+1

Start with curiosity, not criticism

Pick a calm moment (a car ride, walk, or casual time together can work well) and ask questions that invite discussion:

• “What apps do you use the most, and what do you like about them?”
• “What’s something adults don’t understand about social media?”
• “Have you ever seen something online that made you uncomfortable?”
• “How do you decide what’s real or fake online?”
• “Do you think social media affects people’s confidence or stress? How?”

Try to listen before offering advice. Reflecting back what you hear (“So it sounds like group chats can be fun but also stressful”) can help your teen feel understood.CDC

Talk about values, not just screen time

Instead of focusing only on minutes spent online, discuss the kind of person they want to be online:

• Kindness: “Would you say this comment is something you’d say face-to-face?”
• Privacy: “What information would you never want a stranger to know?”
• Reputation: “Would you be comfortable with a teacher, coach, or future employer seeing this?”
• Respect: “What should someone do before sharing another person’s photo or message?”

Remind them that posts, screenshots, and messages can spread beyond their intended audience.Extension at the University of Minnesota+1

Create rules together

Teens are more likely to follow expectations they helped shape. Consider agreeing on:

• When phones are put away (meals, homework, bedtime)
• What happens if someone is bullied or harassed online
• What accounts or content are off-limits
• How privacy settings will be handled
• What signs mean it’s time to take a break

Rules can change as your teen shows more responsibility.Mayo Clinic

Make it safe for them to come to you

A powerful message is:

“If something happens online that scares you, embarrasses you, or feels wrong, I want you to come to me. We’ll figure it out together before we decide what to do.” If teens expect anger or immediate punishment, they may hide problems. A supportive first response can keep communication open.CDC

Share your own habits

You can model the behavior you want to see:

• Put your own phone away during family time
• Talk about how you handle upsetting content
• Admit when you notice yourself scrolling too much
• Show how you check sources before believing or sharing something

A simple opening script

You might say:

“I know social media is a big part of your life, and I’m not trying to control everything you do online. I want to understand how you use it, what you enjoy about it, and what challenges you run into. Can we talk about how we can make it work in a healthy way?” The goal is not one perfect conversation—it’s building a pattern of regular check-ins where your teen knows you’re interested and available.AAP+1
