For a driver prioritizing safety, which electric vehicles have the highest safety ratings and advanced driver-assistance features at a reasonable price point?

For a safety-first EV buyer in the U.S., I’d focus on vehicles that combine strong crash-test performance with substantial standard driver-assistance equipment. Prices below are current U.S. starting MSRPs before taxes, fees, incentives, and dealer pricing.

My practical shortlist

1. Hyundai Ioniq 5 — particularly compelling around $35–45K. It stands out because the relatively affordable entry price coincides with an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, rather than requiring you to move into a luxury EV. IIHS lists standard blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning/prevention and rear automatic braking, while Hyundai makes HDA standard and HDA 2 available on higher trims.IIHS Crash Testing+1

2. Chevrolet Equinox EV — strongest budget/value alternative. At $34,995, it is unusually inexpensive for an EV with 319 miles of EPA-estimated range and more than 20 standard safety/driver-assistance features. Chevrolet The important caveat is that its current IIHS results aren't as strong/comprehensive as the Ioniq 5's, so I'd distinguish feature quantity from demonstrated crash-test performance.

3. Ford Mustang Mach-E — good choice if you want a sportier crossover. Its 2026 Top Safety Pick designation means it clears IIHS's major crashworthiness requirements, though it doesn't reach the Ioniq 5's Top Safety Pick+ designation.IIHS Crash Testing+1

4. Tesla Model Y — notable for its ADAS testing. NHTSA reported in May 2026 that the later-production 2026 Model Y was the first vehicle to pass its new ADAS benchmark, including tests for pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, blind-spot warning and blind-spot intervention. NHTSA Its price and configuration structure are less straightforward to compare with the Ioniq 5, however.

One important safety distinction

Don't equate "advanced driver assistance" with autonomous driving. NHTSA describes Level 2 systems as providing steering and acceleration/braking assistance while the driver remains responsible and attentive; consumer Level 3–5 automation isn't currently available for purchase in the U.S.NHTSA

If safety is the overriding priority and "reasonable price" means roughly $35,000–$45,000, the Ioniq 5 is the clearest place I'd start shopping, followed by the Equinox EV and Mach-E depending on whether price, range, or driving characteristics matter most. That's a comparison of documented safety results and equipment—not an overall ranking of the vehicles.

If you tell me your maximum budget (e.g. $35k, $40k, or $45k) and whether you prefer SUV, sedan, or any body style, I can narrow this to 3–5 specific trims and compare their safety systems, range, and real-world ownership considerations.

If safety is the priority, I’d focus on EVs that combine IIHS Top Safety Pick+ crash-test performance with strong standard driver-assistance systems, rather than judging safety by the number of automated-driving features alone. IIHS also notes that larger, heavier vehicles generally provide more occupant protection than smaller ones.IIHS+1

Strong safety/value choices for 2026

*MSRPs can change and don't necessarily include destination, taxes, incentives or dealer charges.

My practical shortlist

1. Hyundai Ioniq 5 — particularly compelling around the low-$40K range. The 2026 Ioniq 5 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings for small-overlap, updated moderate-overlap and updated side crashes. Its standard forward-collision system earned an Acceptable rating in IIHS's newer vehicle-to-vehicle test and its pedestrian system earned Good. Blind-spot detection, lane-departure prevention and rear automatic braking are standard.IIHS

The higher trims add Highway Driving Assist 2, which combines lane centering, adaptive cruise and assisted lane changes. Hyundai explicitly says the driver remains responsible and attentive.Hyundai USA

2. Chevrolet Equinox EV — the price/value play. At $34,995, it's substantially less expensive than most of the TSP+ EVs. Chevrolet lists 319 miles of EPA-estimated FWD range and more than 20 standard safety/driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian braking, lane keeping, forward-collision warning and following-distance monitoring.Chevrolet

It can also be equipped with Super Cruise, GM's hands-free highway-assistance system. Chevrolet The important caveat for a safety-focused buyer is that I wouldn't equate its impressive ADAS equipment with an IIHS TSP+ rating—the current 2026 IIHS EV award list doesn't include the Equinox EV.IIHS

3. Kia EV9 — if you want maximum occupant space and don't mind spending more. The EV9 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with Good crashworthiness ratings and Good pedestrian and vehicle-to-vehicle crash-prevention performance. Blind-spot detection, lane assistance and rear automatic braking are standard.IIHS

Its standard equipment is unusually comprehensive: Highway Driving Assist 2.0, blind-spot collision avoidance, blind-spot view, 360° camera, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance and several forms of junction/collision avoidance are listed across the EV9 range. Kia Digital Brochures Its $54,900 starting MSRP puts it in a different price category, though.

4. Ford Mustang Mach-E — worth considering if highway assistance matters. The Mach-E is a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick, rather than TSP+. IIHS Its earlier tested model also received Good crashworthiness ratings and standard blind-spot, lane-departure/lane-keeping and rear automatic-braking features. IIHS Ford's BlueCruise is the major reason to consider it if you particularly value hands-free highway driving.

One important distinction

"Advanced driver assistance" isn't the same thing as autonomous driving. Systems such as HDA 2, Super Cruise, BlueCruise and Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) require an attentive driver. Tesla, for example, explicitly says its FSD system does not make the vehicle autonomous.Tesla

For a safety-first purchase, I'd therefore give crash-test performance and effective collision avoidance more weight than how autonomous the marketing makes the car sound.

If I were narrowing the test-drive list based purely on your criteria, I'd start with the Ioniq 5, Equinox EV and EV9, with the choice largely determined by whether your budget is roughly $35K, $43K, or $55K+.

If you give me your maximum budget (e.g. $40K/$45K/$50K), whether you need AWD, and whether you're buying new or used, I can make a more detailed safety/ADAS comparison including IIHS/NHTSA results, range, insurance considerations, and which trim gives you the most safety equipment for the money.

For a U.S. buyer focused on crash safety plus useful driver assistance without moving into luxury-EV pricing, the 2026 field has a few particularly strong choices. I’m using IIHS crash-avoidance/crashworthiness awards, NHTSA information where available, and current manufacturer pricing rather than subjective “safety scores.”

Strong options to consider

*Manufacturer starting MSRP, before destination, taxes, fees and options.

The Ioniq 5 stands out on price

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 starts at $35,000, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 318 miles. Hyundai USA Hyundai USA More importantly for your priorities, it earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Its IIHS testing shows Good ratings for the small-overlap, updated moderate-overlap and side tests, plus Good pedestrian front-crash prevention. Blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning/prevention and rear automatic braking are standard.IIHS

For driver assistance, the base SE has Highway Driving Assist, while SEL, XRT and Limited get HDA 2, which adds lane-change assistance alongside adaptive cruise and lane centering.Hyundai USA

That makes the Ioniq 5 particularly compelling if “reasonable price” means roughly $35–45k.

Mach-E is another relatively affordable safety-focused choice

The 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at $37,795 and earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. https://www.ford.com/ IIHS Its award means it meets IIHS's strong crashworthiness requirements and pedestrian front-crash-prevention requirements, although it doesn't reach the additional requirements needed for the "+" designation.IIHS

Its available BlueCruise system provides hands-free highway driving on supported roads, but—as with HDA 2—it remains a driver-assistance system rather than an autonomous-driving system.

If you need three rows

The 2026 Kia EV9 is considerably more expensive at $54,900, but it combines a Top Safety Pick+ designation with a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. Kia IIHS Kia lists Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance and lane-keeping/lane-following assistance among its ADAS features.Kia

It's therefore worth considering if you need a large family EV rather than a compact/midsize vehicle.

What I'd look for

For a safety-first EV, I'd prioritize IIHS Top Safety Pick+ over simply counting driver-assistance features. The 2026 IIHS criteria are unusually useful because the "+" award requires Good performance in the major crash tests plus Good pedestrian front-crash prevention and an Acceptable/Good vehicle-to-vehicle front-crash-prevention result, with the relevant systems standard.IIHS

I'd then compare:

• Forward collision warning + automatic emergency braking
• Pedestrian detection
• Blind-spot monitoring
• Rear automatic braking
• Lane-centering/adaptive cruise
• Driver-monitoring and system limitations
• Whether the ADAS features are standard or require a costly trim/package

One important caveat: hands-free or lane-centering systems don't make a vehicle self-driving. Hyundai explicitly says the driver remains responsible for controlling the Ioniq 5 even when HDA 2 is operating. Hyundai USA NHTSA likewise describes these technologies as driver-assistance systems rather than substitutes for attentive driving.NHTSA

For a roughly $35–45k budget, the 2026 Ioniq 5 gives you an unusually strong combination of IIHS Top Safety Pick+, substantial standard safety equipment, advanced highway assistance, and a $35,000 starting price. The Mach-E is another option if you specifically value Ford's BlueCruise system.

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 starts at $35,000, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 318 miles. Hyundai USA Hyundai USA More importantly for your priorities, it earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

The 2026 Kia EV9 is considerably more expensive at $54,900, but it combines a Top Safety Pick+ designation with a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. kia.com IIHS Kia lists Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance and lane-keeping/lane-following assistance among its ADAS features.kia.com

When looking for an electric vehicle (EV) that balances top-tier safety, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) , and a reasonable price point (ideally under $45,000–$50,000 before or after potential tax incentives), a few standout models consistently lead the pack in crash testing and smart tech.

The best choices for safety-conscious drivers combine high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or NHTSA with robust, user-friendly active safety suites.

Key Driver-Assistance Features to Look For

When test-driving or comparing these models, prioritize trims or packages that include:

• Stop-and-Go Adaptive Cruise Control & Lane Centering: Essential for reducing driver fatigue in heavy traffic.
• Active Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance: Not just a warning light, but a system that can gently steer you back if you attempt to change lanes into an occupied space.
• Rear Cross-Traffic Braking: Highly valuable when backing out of tight, obstructed parking spaces.[cars.usnews.com](https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/advice/safest-electric-cars)

If you'd like to narrow this down further, let me know:

• Your approximate budget
• Whether you prefer a crossover/SUV or a sedan/hatchback
• If you specifically require AWD for winter weather

I can give you a more precise recommendation and compare their specific driver-assist packages!

If safety is the priority, I’d focus on EVs that combine a top-tier crash-test result with strong standard collision-avoidance technology—not simply cars with the most autonomous-driving marketing.

For 2026 models, these stand out:

*MSRPs are before taxes, destination charges, incentives, or dealer pricing.

🥇 Hyundai Ioniq 5 — my top recommendation

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is unusually compelling for a safety-focused buyer because it gets the IIHS's highest Top Safety Pick+ designation while starting at only $35,000. IIHS gives it Good ratings across the major crashworthiness tests and Good pedestrian front-crash prevention; blind-spot detection, lane-departure prevention and rear automatic braking are standard.IIHS Crash Test & Safety+1

Its driver assistance is also unusually strong for the money. The base SE has Highway Driving Assist, while SEL and higher trims get HDA 2, which adds highway lane-centering, adaptive following and lane-change assistance.Hyundai USA

Sweet spot: Ioniq 5 SEL RWD at about $39,800.Hyundai News

🥈 Ford Mustang Mach-E — strong safety/ADAS balance

The 2026 Mustang Mach-E earns IIHS Top Safety Pick rather than TSP+, but it's still one of the strongest safety-rated mainstream EVs.IIHS Crash Test & Safety

Ford lists the 2026 Mach-E starting around $37,795, making it competitive with the Ioniq 5. https://www.ford.com/ Its available BlueCruise system is particularly attractive if you do lots of highway driving.

I'd choose the Mach-E over the Ioniq 5 if highway driver assistance and driving dynamics are more important to you than getting the absolute highest IIHS award.

🥉 Genesis GV60 — safest small luxury choice

The 2026 Genesis GV60 earns Top Safety Pick+, with Good crashworthiness ratings and Good pedestrian crash prevention.IIHS Crash Test & Safety

It has sophisticated driver-assistance technology and a more upscale interior than the Ioniq 5, but the price premium makes it harder to call it a "reasonable price" choice. It's worth considering if you're comfortable moving into the luxury segment.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Kia EV9 — if you need three rows

The Kia EV9 is one of the safest larger EVs available: IIHS gives it Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in the major crash tests and Good pedestrian and vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention. Blind-spot detection, lane-departure prevention and rear automatic braking are standard.IIHS Crash Test & Safety

The catch is price: the base 2026 Light RWD starts at $54,900, although Kia says it includes 27 driver/safety-assistance features.Kia

My ranking for a safety-first buyer

1. Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL — best combination of price + IIHS TSP+ + sophisticated ADAS
2. Ford Mustang Mach-E — excellent alternative, particularly for highway driving
3. Genesis GV60 — excellent safety, but expensive
4. Kia EV9 — outstanding choice for families needing three rows

One important caveat: ADAS isn't autonomous driving. Even HDA 2 and BlueCruise require an attentive driver, and Hyundai explicitly warns that HDA 2 cannot prevent every collision or loss of control.Hyundai USA

If your budget is roughly $30k, $40k, or $50k, I can also narrow this down to the 3 safest EVs in that exact price range, including estimated real-world range and ownership costs.

If safety is the priority but you don't want to spend luxury-EV money, I'd focus on vehicles that combine a current IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award with strong standard crash-avoidance technology.

My shortlist

Prices are approximate U.S. base MSRPs and can change with destination fees, incentives and model-year updates.

🥇 Best overall: Hyundai Ioniq 5

The 2026 Ioniq 5 is probably where I'd start. It earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+, including Good ratings in the small-overlap, updated moderate-overlap and updated side tests. Its standard safety equipment includes blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning/prevention and rear automatic braking.IIHS+1

It also starts at about $36,650, making its combination of crash protection, driver assistance, range and practicality unusually compelling. Car and Driver currently ranks it its #1 electric SUV under $45,000.Car and Driver

🥈 Kia EV6

The EV6 is closely related mechanically to the Ioniq 5 and is an excellent choice if you want something more athletic. The 2026 model starts around $37,900, with an EPA range of up to about 295 miles according to Consumer Reports.Consumer Reports

I'd give the Ioniq 5 the edge specifically for a safety-first buyer, though: its 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ status is particularly reassuring, whereas NHTSA has selected the 2026 EV6 for crash testing but its new-model-year results aren't yet established in the sources I found.NHTSA+1

🥉 Subaru Solterra

If you value all-wheel drive and Subaru's safety philosophy, the Solterra deserves a look. The 2025 model earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and IIHS lists it among its recommended used EVs.IIHS HLDI+1

Its drawback is value: the Ioniq 5 generally gives you more range and faster charging for the money.

Tesla Model 3

The Model 3 is worth considering if your definition of safety includes a particularly sophisticated driver-assistance ecosystem. It earned IIHS Top Safety Pick in 2025, although that's one tier below Top Safety Pick+.IIHS HLDI

I wouldn't choose it solely because of its driver-assistance capabilities, however. Systems such as Tesla's Autopilot/FSD are driver-assistance systems, not autonomous driving; the driver remains responsible for monitoring the vehicle.

What I'd buy

For a safety-conscious buyer spending roughly $35K–$45K, my ranking would be:

1. Hyundai Ioniq 5 — best combination of safety rating, standard safety equipment, price and practicality.
2. Kia EV6 — nearly as compelling, with a sportier driving experience.
3. Subaru Solterra — particularly attractive if AWD and conservative safety engineering matter most.
4. Ford Mustang Mach-E — good safety credentials and strong driver-assistance technology.
5. Tesla Model 3 — excellent technology and efficiency, but I'd put the IIHS-rated Hyundai/Kia/Subaru options ahead of it for a pure safety-first purchase.

One important distinction: IIHS and NHTSA ratings measure crashworthiness and crash avoidance; they aren't endorsements of autonomous-driving capability. NHTSA specifically recommends looking for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking and related systems when comparing vehicles.NHTSA

If you tell me your budget (e.g. under $35K, $40K, or $50K), whether you need AWD, and whether you prefer SUV vs. sedan, I can narrow this to the 3 safest buys for your situation, including current incentives and estimated ownership costs.

For a safety-conscious driver looking for an electric vehicle that balances top-tier crash ratings, robust driver-assistance tech, and a sensible price point, several standout options lead the market.

When evaluating "reasonable," we look at mainstream EVs that often qualify for federal tax incentives or feature competitive base MSRPs, avoiding $70k+ luxury tiers while still securing elite safety awards like the IIHS Top Safety Pick+.motortrend.com [motortrend.com](https://www.motortrend.com/features/safest-evs)
