For coffee shops, Subport and Submatic are the most recommended tools for managing recurring subscription memberships directly on Square. For shops seeking a mobile app experience, Odeko, Craver, and Per Diem provide integrated mobile ordering, loyalty, and subscription features. Square's own native tools offer basic subscription support, while apps like Subport offer more specialized recurring billing and club-style membership management.
To run a smooth "Daily Brew Pass," "Mug Club," or tiered VIP coffee membership that syncs seamlessly at the register, specialized integrations from the Square App Marketplace are the best route.[](](]()]()
Running a subscription program (like an "unlimited drip coffee" pass, a monthly mug club , or a prepaid bean bag delivery model) directly through Square requires looking past basic native recurring invoices. Because ’s native features are geared more toward basic invoicing or standard loyalty points rather than automated recurring café item redemption, handle this best.[](]()](]()]()
Best for: Cafés wanting a dedicated, streamlined mobile ordering experience coupled with subscription tracking.
How it works: Subport lets you build custom subscription tiers (e.g., unlimited drip coffee, X drinks per week) and gives your customers a smooth mobile app interface to order ahead in two clicks. It tracks credit balances or redemption frequency limits and pushes the order straight to your Square POS.
Best for: Mug clubs, loyalty discount passes, and lightweight in-person or online signups.
How it works: Submatic integrates directly with your Square POS and customer database. You can set up recurring billing for specific perks, like free daily drinks or percentage discounts on entire categories (e.g., 10% off all bags of beans). When a regular walks in, staff look up the customer by name or digital pass, and member benefits automatically apply at checkout.
Best for: Selling prepaid whole-bean coffee bags or at-home subscription boxes shipped to customers.
How it works: Square’s out-of-the-box recurring billing tool works fine if you are charging a fixed weekly/monthly fee for physical retail goods via checkout links or Square Online.
The Catch: It is not optimized for daily, in-store counter redemptions or tracking the number of lattes a customer has consumed this week.[](https://squareup.com/us/en/subscriptions)
Popular Coffee Shop Subscription Models to Implement
The Daily Brew Pass: Charge a flat monthly rate ($30–$40) for one standard drip coffee or cold brew per day. High margin on base coffee, and it guarantees foot traffic.
If you mean customer-facing coffee club/subscription programs that work with Square POS, there are a few distinct approaches. I’d separate them into native Square, Square-integrated membership tools, and branded-app solutions.
Program
Best fit
What it does with Square
Key consideration
Square Subscriptions
Simple recurring coffee/bean subscriptions
Native recurring billing, checkout links, QR codes, and item-based subscription plans
Best if you don't need sophisticated “coffee club” membership rules
Submatic
Coffee/meal passes & mug clubs
Memberships appear in Square and benefits attach to customer accounts; memberships can be sold through Square POS or online
More purpose-built for recurring café memberships
Craver
Coffee shops wanting a branded app + subscription
Integrates with Square POS, loyalty, ordering and “Coffee Club” subscriptions
More comprehensive, but you're buying into an app platform
Square Loyalty
Free/points-based regular-customer program
Native Square rewards based on visits, spend, items/categories
Square now supports recurring plans with weekly, monthly, biweekly, quarterly, semiannual and annual billing. You can assign catalog items to a subscription plan, offer pickup, create QR/checkout links, and manage subscriptions from Square.
For a coffee shop, you could create something like:
Submatic is specifically designed around memberships/passes, with Square examples including a coffee/meal pass and mug club. It can provide free or discounted products, category discounts, store credit and other membership benefits, with benefits appearing within Square and attached to customer accounts.
That makes it particularly relevant if your idea is:
“Pay $X/month and get a certain number of drinks or member discounts.”
Craver is aimed specifically at coffee shops/QSRs using Square and combines a branded mobile app with ordering, loyalty, gift cards and membership/subscription programs.
This is more appropriate if your subscription is part of a broader strategy to get customers ordering through your own app, rather than just managing recurring payments.
4. Square Loyalty — better for a free “club” than paid subscriptions
Square Loyalty lets you reward customers based on visits, dollars spent, specific items or categories, with rewards redeemable in-store or online. Square also supports loyalty tiers and promotions.
For example:
Coffee Club — Free
1 point per visit
10 points = free drink
Double points during slow hours
Coffee Club Plus — Paid
$25/month
one drink per day
10% off food
double loyalty points
The second piece would generally require Square Subscriptions or a membership integration; Square Loyalty itself isn't the paid-membership engine.
My practical shortlist
If you're evaluating these for an actual coffee shop, I'd investigate Square Subscriptions vs. Submatic vs. Craver first:
Want the simplest/most native setup: Square Subscriptions
Want a true coffee-pass/mug-club membership: Submatic
Square's own developer documentation explicitly uses a coffee shop coffee subscription as an example of how its subscription infrastructure works, so the underlying Square system is well suited to this use case.
If you tell me what kind of subscription you have in mind (e.g. unlimited coffee, 10 drinks/month, daily drink, coffee beans, or VIP perks) and roughly how many locations/customers you have, I can compare the actual pricing, transaction fees, customer experience, and Square integration of the top 3.
If you mean paid coffee memberships/subscriptions that run through Square POS, there are a few good approaches:
Square Subscriptions — Best if you want to keep everything native to Square. You can create recurring weekly/monthly/etc. billing, generate signup links/QR codes, and manage pauses/cancellations. Square also supports item-based subscription plans with discounts.
Submatic — A Square App Marketplace option specifically suited to coffee/meal passes and memberships. It can handle perks such as free or discounted products, category discounts, or store credit, with memberships sold through Square POS or online.
Square Loyalty + a paid membership structure — Better if your goal is primarily to drive repeat visits rather than deliver a fixed number of coffees. Square Loyalty supports visit-, spend-, and item-based rewards, promotions, and tiers.
What I'd consider for a coffee shop
A few subscription models tend to fit Square particularly well:
Program
Example
Square fit
Monthly drink club
$25/mo → 1 drip coffee/day
Square Subscriptions
Coffee pass
$30/mo → 20 drinks
Submatic
Unlimited drip
$35/mo → unlimited drip coffee
/custom setup
One important limitation: Square's native item subscriptions don't track an entitlement such as "5 drinks remaining this month." Square explicitly says subscriptions don't provide an entitlement counter for things like a five-class membership. Square That's one reason a dedicated membership/pass app can be preferable for a coffee subscription where customers redeem a defined number of drinks.
If you tell me your coffee shop's concept and what you want to charge (e.g. "$30/month for one coffee per day"), I can lay out 3–5 specific Square subscription programs with pricing, margins, and the exact setup I'd use in Square.
Best for: All-in-one custom mobile ordering apps with built-in unlimited or credit-based subscriptions.
How it works with Square: It syncs directly with your Square POS and lets you launch a white-label mobile ordering experience. Customers can do 2-click order-aheads for their daily brew without paying at every single pickup.
Running a subscription or recurring membership model for a coffee shop (like a mug club, a prepaid monthly drip coffee pass, or bean-of-the-month packages) requires bridging the gap between recurring billing and your point-of-sale (POS).
Submatic (Best Overall for Cafe Memberships & Passes)
How it works: Submatic is a dedicated membership and subscription management tool built to integrate directly with Square. It allows you to set up recurring club models (like mug clubs, unlimited drip passes, or bag-of-beans subscriptions).
Key Features: Automatically syncs customer data and order details with your Square POS. When a member checks out in-store (identified via name lookup or a digital pass), their discounts or free allocated items apply automatically to the ticket. It also generates a custom-branded online signup page for your website.
Coffee shop owners experimenting with recurring house accounts and prepaid club passes often emphasize keeping the register workflow as fast as possible:
I found that keeping the sign-up flow completely separate on a landing page via our website saved us a massive headache at the register during morning rush hour.
If you try to manage a 'coffee per day' subscription manually through basic notes or a punch card, staff get confused. You need an app that auto-recognizes the profile at POS checkout.
To help narrow down the best setup, tell me:
Are you looking for a mug/drink club (for in-cafe consumption) or a coffee bean delivery subscription?
Roughly how many subscribers do you plan to launch with?
If you mean paid coffee memberships (for example, “$25/month for 10 drinks” or “free drip coffee every day”), the best choice depends on how advanced you want the program to be. For a coffee shop already using Square, these are the main options to consider:
10% off drinks, early access to seasonal drinks, birthday perk
Bean + Beverage Club
Monthly bag of beans plus drinks
Good for specialty coffee shops
Office Coffee Membership
Weekly pickup bundles for nearby businesses
My general recommendation by shop size
Small independent café: Start with Square Subscriptions + a simple redemption system.
Growing café with lots of regulars: Consider Craver or Per Diem if a branded app and ordering experience matter.
Specialty shop focused on community: A tiered “Coffee Club” (basic / VIP / bean club) often fits the brand better than unlimited drinks.
A good rule is to price memberships so a customer feels they are saving money, but the average member still spends more per month than they would have without the program.
If you tell me your average drink price, number of daily customers, and whether you want unlimited drinks vs prepaid credits vs discounts, I can suggest a specific membership structure and pricing.
Submatic — Best for VIP mug clubs, wine/coffee bean subscriptions, and category discounts.
Why it works for coffee shops: It lets you build structured membership passes where member benefits (discounts on specific drink tiers, free weekly add-ons, or store credit) attach automatically to customer profiles inside Square POS. You can sell memberships online or at the register.[](https://squareup.com/us/en/app-marketplace/app/submatic)
Square Invoices (Native Recurring) — Best for whole-bean bag delivery subscriptions.
Why it works for coffee shops: If you aren't doing high-velocity in-store cup redemptions, but instead want to charge customers monthly to automatically ship or reserve two bags of roasted coffee beans, you can set up automated recurring invoices natively in Square. It lacks the "per-day cup redemption" logic of a café pass, but works cleanly for retail-focused roasters.[1][2]
To help narrow down the ideal fit, tell me:
Are you trying to set up an in-store drink subscription (like a monthly coffee pass) or a retail bean delivery subscription?
Do you need customers to be able to order ahead via an app , or will they scan/redeem at the register?
Square Subscriptions — native recurring billing; good for simple monthly coffee/bean clubs.
Craver — stronger for a branded app combining Coffee Club subscriptions, ordering, and loyalty.
Per Diem — branded-app approach with memberships/subscriptions and Square integration.
Subport — membership-focused option for recurring café drink programs.
Square Loyalty — not a paid subscription, but useful alongside one for points, tiers, and repeat visits.
For a typical independent café: I’d compare Square Subscriptions vs. Craver vs. Subport based on whether you need just recurring billing or a full customer-facing membership experience.
Setting up a coffee subscription program on Square (whether for monthly bean bags, merchandise, or an in-house "endless cup" mug club) depends heavily on whether you are selling online/shipped goods or in-store daily perks.
1. Native Square Subscriptions (Best for Coffee Bean Delivery)
2. Subport (Best for Advanced In-Store Memberships & Mugs Clubs)
If you want to run complex local programs—like unlimited drip coffee passes, VIP discount tiers, or trial memberships redeemed at the counter—native tools fall short. Subport is an add-on built specifically to bridge this gap. [](https://subport.us/blog/square-subscription-management-for-recurring-billing)
Best for: Unlimited daily drink passes, local "mug clubs," and tiered customer loyalty memberships.
How it works: It layers advanced subscription logic over your existing Square POS setup, allowing you to manage custom plans, automated card-on-file billing, and sign-ups without high platform take-rates.
Pros: Handles complex plan structures (prepaid, recurring, custom trials) and syncs cleanly with your POS workflow.
Best for: High-volume independent shops wanting their own branded app with integrated rewards and recurring customer segments.
How it works: Syncs your Square menus, modifiers, inventory, and categories automatically into a mobile platform equipped with AI-driven marketing and CRM tools.
Pros: Keeps your physical inventory and online data completely unified; excellent for automated SMS/email retention campaigns.
For At-Home Beans: Use Native Square Subscriptions linked from your website or a QR code on the retail coffee bags sitting on your front counter. [](https://squareup.com/us/en/subscriptions)
For Daily In-Store Drinks: Be cautious with "unlimited" models—ensure your baristas have an easy way to ring up a "$0.00 subscription item" using a customer tag or customer card on file so inventory and shift tips stay accurate.
To help narrow down the best fit, tell me:
Are you trying to sell shipped bags of coffee beans or in-store daily drinks/perks?
Do you need a customer-facing mobile app , or just a simple way to bill cards on file?
If you’re running a coffee shop on Square, I’d narrow the field to these:
Program
Best for
My take
Square Subscriptions
Simple recurring coffee/bean plans
Best starting point if you want to stay native to Square
Submatic
True coffee-club memberships
Best for “X drinks/month” memberships
Craver
Subscription + branded mobile app
Best for a more sophisticated digital experience
Square Loyalty
Rewards rather than paid memberships
Best add-on to increase repeat visits
1. Square Subscriptions — best overall for simplicity
Square's native subscription system lets you attach recurring plans to items, offer weekly/monthly/etc. billing, discounts, trials, and pause/resume options. There are currently no monthly fees or fixed costs for Square Subscriptions itself.
For a café, I'd consider:
$19/month — Coffee Club: 10 drip coffees
$39/month — Latte Club: 8 specialty drinks
$69/month — Daily Club: 1 drink/day
$15/month — VIP: 10% off everything + occasional free drink
The limitation is important: Square's native subscriptions don't function like a full redemption/entitlement system. For example, they don't automatically track that someone has used 7 of their 10 monthly drinks.
This is more interesting if your concept is “membership with benefits” rather than simply recurring billing. Submatic specifically supports coffee/meal passes and can provide benefits such as free or discounted products, category discounts, and store credit, with benefits attached to customer accounts in Square.
I'd favor this if you're trying to build something like:
$29/month → 15 drinks + 10% off food + members-only drink
That's closer to the subscription model that works particularly well for cafés.
Craver combines mobile ordering, loyalty, subscriptions/memberships, and Square integration. It specifically markets “Coffee Club” subscriptions and Square loyalty/gift-card synchronization.
I'd look at this if you have multiple locations or want customers ordering ahead from a branded app—not just buying a membership.
4. Square Loyalty — don't overlook it
This isn't technically a subscription, but it's worth considering alongside one. Square Loyalty supports visit-, spend-, item-, and category-based rewards and integrates directly with Square POS and Online.
Square's own coffee-shop data says spend-based programs are particularly common among Square coffee/tea sellers, while single-tier programs and free-item rewards are popular.
Café where the core offer is “X drinks per month”:Submatic
Multi-location / app-focused coffee brand:Craver
Coffee bean subscription / shipped coffee:Square Subscriptions is probably sufficient.
If you tell me your average drink price, monthly customer count, and what kind of subscription you want (e.g. unlimited coffee vs. 10 drinks/month), I can design the actual 2–3 membership tiers and pricing so the economics work.
Best for: Mug clubs, tiered VIP passes, and automated category/item discounts.
How it works with Square: It connects your Square customer directory so that member benefits (like 10% off beans or a free daily drip) automatically trigger at checkout when a cashier looks up the customer or scans a digital pass.
Best for: Shops wanting a full-scale "Starbucks-like" branded mobile app experience that bundles loyalty, mobile order-ahead, and recurring subscriptions.
How it works with Square: Automatically maps your Square modifiers, menus, pricing, and inventory directly into your own dedicated customer-facing app.
Square’s Native Subscriptions / Recurring Invoices (Best for Bean-to-Door Delivery)
How it works: If your "subscription" is strictly customers paying a monthly fee to have a bag of roasted whole-bean coffee shipped to their house or prepared for scheduled local pickup, you can use Square’s built-in tools.
How it works: Many cafes find that a true recurring subscription creates friction at a fast-moving morning register. Instead, they use Square Loyalty —a native, budget-friendly reward layer.
Key Features: Set up visit-based, spend-based, or item-based point accumulation right on your existing Square screen. Customers type in their phone number at checkout to earn toward free drinks or percentage discounts.
