Which services provide vacation home rentals directly from owners?

If you mean vacation rental services where you can book a home offered by an individual owner (rather than a hotel), these are some of the main options:

A few things to keep in mind when booking directly from owners:

• Verify the owner and property (look for reviews, a real rental agreement, and consistent photos/details).
• Use secure payment methods and avoid sending money outside the platform unless you have verified the owner and terms.
• Read cancellation, damage, and refund policies carefully because protections vary more when you move away from large marketplaces.

If your goal is specifically “no Airbnb/Vrbo fees”, “avoid scams,” or “find luxury homes directly from owners,” the best services can differ.

If you are looking to rent vacation homes directly from owners—cutting out corporate intermediaries or heavy service fees—several platforms and regional networks specialize in or facilitate direct owner-to-guest bookings:

• Houfy stands for "House Finder" and is a dedicated open platform built specifically for direct-booking vacation rentals. Hosts list properties and communicate with guests directly, and the site charges no platform service fees to guests.houfy.com
• FloridaRentals.com (often associated with regional "By Owner" networks) connects travelers directly with individual homeowners in specific high-demand states like Florida, bypassing the massive traveler fees found on larger generic OTAs.
• Vrbo (Vacation Rentals by Owner) is the most famous mainstream marketplace focused exclusively on whole-home residential properties listed by individual owners and private property managers rather than hotels. While they process payments centrally, it serves as the traditional hub for finding independently owned houses, cabins, and condos.
• Hipcamp acts as a peer-to-peer marketplace, but specifically for privately owned land, ranches, unique cabins, and campsites directly from individual landowners and outdoor hosts.
• Regional "By Owner" Directories (such as Carolina Mornings, Maui By Owner , or local Facebook rental co-ops) exist for almost every major vacation destination. Travelers frequently find a property on a major site like Airbnb or Vrbo, do a quick web search on the property name/image to locate the owner's independent local website, and book directly.

Are you looking for a rental in a specific geographic location (like a beach town or mountain region), or do you need tips on how to safely verify and communicate directly with an owner?

• Houfy stands for "House Finder" and is one of the most prominent zero-fee direct booking marketplaces. Owners list their properties directly, guests communicate with them openly, and Houfy charges zero platform service fees on standard bookings.houfy.com+1

While they do charge traveler service fees, it remains a massive directory explicitly focused on private residential properties rather than shared spaces or hotels.
• Owner Direct Vacation Rentals is a long-standing platform that connects travelers with verified individual property hosts and independent managers globally.ownerdirect.com+1
• Niche/Regional By-Owner Sites like Florida Rentals by Owners (FlaRBO) or local independent state/regional listing boards let you find localized properties and deal with regional owners directly to avoid national booking markups.
• Social/Direct Outreach (The "Google Search" Method) : Many travelers find a property on major aggregated sites like HomeToGo or Booking.com , use a reverse image search or look up the specific property name, and find the owner's independent local website or social media page to book direct.

If you have a specific destination or type of property (like a beach condo or mountain cabin) in mind, I can help you find the best regional or direct-booking channels for that area.

If you specifically want vacation homes rented directly from the owner, rather than a traditional hotel or property-management company, these are worth looking at:

• houfy.com — One of the clearest owner-direct options. Guests communicate with the host, and Houfy says it has 100,000+ listings in 100+ countries. It charges no standard guest platform service fee, although some PMS-connected bookings have a 5% API fee.Houfy
• vacationrentbyowner.com — Focused specifically on rentals by owner and advertises direct owner booking with no booking/service fee.VacationRentByOwner

• hometogo.com — More of a vacation-rental marketplace/metasearch engine. Some rentals are supplied directly by owners, while others come from rental providers, so you'll need to check the individual listing.HomeToGo

Best choices

If your priority is actually dealing with the homeowner and avoiding marketplace fees, I'd start with Houfy and VacationRentByOwner.com.

One caution: with owner-direct bookings, you generally have fewer protections than you might get through a major OTA. Before paying, verify the owner's identity, confirm the property's address, get the cancellation/refund terms in writing, and use a payment method with meaningful buyer protection.

Yes. If you specifically want vacation homes where the listing/booking is direct from the owner rather than a large booking marketplace, these are worth looking at:

• vacationrentbyowner.com — Focuses specifically on owner-direct vacation rentals and says guests communicate and pay directly with owners, with no platform booking fees.
• ownerdirect.com — Established vacation-rental search site featuring properties supplied directly by owners as well as partners. Note that many bookings are completed through the partner's site rather than directly on Owner Direct.
• getdirectstays.com — A newer search service designed specifically to find direct-booking websites for vacation homes, linking you to the owner's or property manager's own site.
• vpodirect.com — Markets itself as a vacation-rental site where you communicate and book directly with verified property owners.

For comparison, Airbnb, Vrbo, Vacasa, and Evolve aren't necessarily owner-direct. For example, Vacasa manages homes on behalf of homeowners, while Evolve provides professional rental management and distributes properties across major booking sites.Vacasa+1

If your goal is to avoid Airbnb/Vrbo service fees and deal directly with the homeowner, I'd start with VacationRentByOwner.com and DirectStays.

If you tell me where you're vacationing (e.g., Florida Gulf Coast, Outer Banks, Smoky Mountains) and approximate dates, I can also find owner-direct rental sites/properties for that area.

If you want to bypass massive travel platforms and rent vacation homes directly from the owners—often saving money on hidden guest service fees—several dedicated marketplaces and directories facilitate direct communication and bookings:

• Owner Direct Vacation Rentals has been operating for decades, acting as a comprehensive directory that connects travelers to independently managed and owner-listed properties around the globe.ownerdirect.com+1
• Rent By Owner aggregates a vast inventory of condos, cabins, and villas. While it functions largely as a meta-search and referral site that sometimes links out to partner channels, it specifically targets "by owner" listings to help compare independent properties.rentbyowner.com+1
• Local/Regional Independent Sites: Many independent homeowners also list their properties on hyper-local community boards, local Chamber of Commerce lodging directories, or niche Facebook groups dedicated to specific vacation towns (e.g., "Outer Banks rentals by owner").
• Direct Property Websites: Many professional independent owners use property management software (like Lodgify or Hostaway) to build their own independent, branded direct-booking websites. If you find a property you love on a major site like Vrbo or Airbnb , you can often Google the property name or logo to see if the host runs their own direct-booking site to save on fees.vrbo.com+1

If you mean vacation homes where you can deal with the owner (or host) rather than a hotel or traditional rental company, these are the main services to consider:

Other owner-focused options:

• Facebook Marketplace and local vacation rental groups — sometimes offer true owner-direct rentals, but require more caution because protections vary.
• Local destination rental websites — many beach towns, lake communities, and ski areas have owner-listed vacation homes outside the big platforms.
• Property-owner associations or community rental boards — useful for specific resorts or vacation communities.

Tips for finding a true owner rental

• Look for listings that say “owner-managed,” “hosted by owner,” or “book direct.”
• Ask who you’ll communicate with during the stay and who handles maintenance.
• Avoid paying by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or other methods that remove buyer protections.
• Verify the address, photos, reviews, and ownership details before sending money.

For classic vacation homes (weekends to a few weeks), Vrbo and Airbnb are usually the biggest choices. For monthly furnished stays, Furnished Finder is more owner-direct by design.Furnished Finder+1
