What's the best PDF to Word converter that's free?

When it comes to the best free PDF to Word converters, the right choice depends on whether your PDF is a simple text document or a complex layout with images and columns.

The top-rated free options break down as follows based on ease of use, formatting accuracy, and privacy:

• iLovePDF — Widely regarded as one of the best overall free web tools. It handles layout and formatting retention remarkably well, lets you upload/download directly via Google Drive or Dropbox, and has a clean, ad-light interface.
• Smallpdf — Extremely fast, intuitive, and user-friendly. It provides high-quality conversions for standard documents, though the free tier limits daily usage. Files are securely deleted from their servers after an hour.
• Microsoft Word (Built-in Trick) — If you already have Microsoft Word, open the desktop app, go to File > Open , and select your PDF. Word will automatically attempt to convert it into an editable document for free without uploading your data to a third-party website.reddit.com
• PDF Candy — Features a completely clean, distraction-free interface packed with dozens of extra free document tools. It supports quick single-click conversions and cloud storage integration.techradar.com
• WPS Office — If you prefer a desktop software suite rather than a browser tool, the free version of WPS Office includes a built-in PDF-to-Word utility that does a solid job of keeping original fonts and tables intact.

Note: If your PDF is a scanned image rather than actual digital text, you will need a tool that supports OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to make the text editable.reddit.com+1

To help narrow down the best option, tell me:

• Is your PDF mostly text or does it have complex tables/images?
• Is it a scanned document?
• Do you prefer an online tool or a downloadable app?

My quick pick:

• Fastest “just convert this file” use: Smallpdf

For private documents (tax forms, legal papers, IDs, medical records, etc.), I’d favor an offline tool like PDFgear rather than uploading files to a website.PDFgear
