For alternatives to Hacker News, the best-fit recommendation depends on what you value most. If you seek the closest community-driven equivalent, Lobsters is widely cited for its high-quality, invite-only technical discussions. For broader industry news, Techmeme or Slashdot are standard choices. If you prefer newer or federated platforms with a focus on developer transparency, consider Refetch or community-based spaces like Dev.to.

Competitors of Hacker News?

If you mean communities/sites competing with Hacker News for tech news, developer discussion, and startup discovery, the main ones are:

Lobsters — probably the closest direct competitor. Smaller, heavily technical, tag-based, and invite-oriented.
Reddit — much broader, but communities such as r/programming, r/webdev, r/startups, and r/SideProject overlap heavily with HN's audience.
daily.dev — developer-focused news aggregation with personalized feeds rather than HN's single ranked stream.
DEV Community — more focused on publishing tutorials, articles, and developer discussions.
Indie Hackers — overlaps particularly with HN's startup/founder audience; centered on entrepreneurs sharing businesses and experiences.
HackerNoon — long-form technology writing rather than HN-style link discussion.
Slashdot — an older tech-news/discussion competitor.
Lemmy — open-source, federated communities with voting and discussion, structurally similar to Reddit/HN-style aggregation.
Product Hunt — overlaps more on startup/product discovery and launches than on technical news.

If you're looking at this as a business/market

I'd divide the competitive landscape into four buckets:

Segment	Examples	Competes with HN on
Direct	Lobsters, Slashdot	Tech links + discussion
Developer communities	Reddit, DEV, daily.dev	Developer attention
Startup communities	,

Lobsters is the closest product analogue, while Reddit is the biggest adjacent competitor. daily.dev is particularly interesting if you're thinking about the newer, personalized-feed model rather than classic social-news aggregation.

Lobsters — probably the closest structural alternative: link aggregation, technical discussions, voting, and a relatively high-signal audience.
Reddit — especially communities like r/programming, r/webdev, r/javascript, r/SideProject, and r/SaaS. Much larger and more fragmented than HN.
daily.dev — personalized developer-news aggregation rather than a direct HN clone; pulls from thousands of sources and lets developers customize their feeds.
DEV Community (dev.to) — developer publishing and discussion, with more emphasis on tutorials, articles, and community interaction.
HackerNoon — more focused on publishing edited, long-form technology articles than HN-style link discussions.
Indie Hackers — particularly relevant for startup founders, bootstrappers, and people building side projects.
Product Hunt — more of a product-discovery/launch platform than a news forum, but competes for the attention of founders and tech enthusiasts.
DevHunt — specifically oriented toward discovering and launching developer tools.
Discord/Slack developer communities — less public and less searchable, but increasingly important for real-time developer discussion.

If you're thinking about this as a business

When looking for competitors, alternatives, or similar communities to Hacker News (HN) , the right choice depends on whether you are looking for strict technical discussions, curated tech news, product launches, or a more welcoming community.

The top platforms filling this space vary by focus:

Lobsters - Best for deep technical discussions . It is an invite-only (or easily requestable invite) link-aggregation and discussion site heavily focused on computer science, programming, and tech culture, featuring a strict moderation style and a cleaner signal-to-noise ratio than HN.
daily.dev - Best for a personalized developer feed . It acts as a professional network and news aggregator extension/app that curates articles based specifically on your preferred tech stacks, frameworks, and programming topics rather than a single global upvoted homepage.
Product Hunt - Best for discovering new software and tech products . While HN features "Show HN" threads for indie projects, Product Hunt is entirely dedicated to daily tech product launches, tools, and startup showcases with a massive builder community.
dev.to - Best for publishing tutorials and open discussion . An inclusive, community-driven blogging platform where developers share code, write long-form walkthroughs, and engage in a much friendlier and warmer environment than HN's notoriously blunt comment sections.
Slashdot - Best for classic IT and tech news . The original "News for Nerds", predating Hacker News by a decade. It relies on editor-evaluated, user-submitted stories covering hard tech, open-source, and science policy alongside spirited community comment threads.
Hackernoon - Best for edited long-form tech articles . It leans less on quick link-sharing and fast comment flame wars, focusing instead on editor-curated stories, essays, and deep dives written by technologists and software engineers.
Reddit (r/programming, r/technology) - Best for scale and niche sub-communities . Subreddits offer segmented, high-volume discussions where you can drill down into specific languages, infrastructure, or career advice with vastly different community tones depending on the specific board.

If you're looking to explore one of these, let me know:

Are you searching for a place with better technical depth?
Are you trying to promote or launch a project?
Do you want something with a friendlier community tone?

I can help you pinpoint the exact platform that fits your habits.

Hacker News occupies a unique niche as a minimalist, text-heavy link aggregator and discussion board for tech, startups, and programming. While it doesn't have direct corporate "competitors" in the traditional sense, several platforms serve similar purposes for developer news, tech discussion, and community curation.

Lobsters : A community-driven link aggregator similar to Hacker News, but with a tighter, invitation-based membership model, a strict focus on computing topics, and a flat/moderated discussion atmosphere designed to avoid some of HN's noise.
daily.dev : A personalized professional network and news aggregator built specifically for developers, replacing the static front page of Hacker News with an automated, highly customizable feed of technical articles.
Slashdot : One of the original tech-nerd community and news discussion websites, featuring heavily moderated, user-submitted news stories with threaded comment sections.
Techmeme : An automated and editorially tweaked real-time aggregator for mainstream technology news and Silicon Valley industry discourse, focusing more on tech business and media than raw programming.
Developer Subreddits (r/programming & r/webdev ): Reddit's tech and coding communities act as massive, high-volume alternatives for link sharing and deep-dive technical threads.
Product Hunt : A platform dedicated to discovering new software, tech products, and startups daily, serving as a launchpad alternative to Hacker News' "Show HN" threads.
DEV Community : A constructive and inclusive social network for software developers where users publish original long-form articles rather than just link-aggregating.

Are you looking for an alternative to browse tech news , a place to share a project/startup , or a community with a better discussion culture ? Let me know so I can point you toward the exact right fit.

Hacker News (HN) doesn't have direct corporate "competitors" in the traditional market sense (since it's run by Y Combinator as a community bulletin board), but several platforms vie for the same developer, tech enthusiast, and startup-founder attention.

The primary alternatives and community competitors to Hacker News break down by their unique style and focus:

Lobsters - The Purist Alternative. Run on a similar minimalist, text-first, upvote-driven model, Lobsters focuses heavily on serious computing and programming topics with a very high signal-to-noise ratio. It is invite-only to keep comment quality high and community noise low.
Product Hunt - The Launch Competitor. While HN handles deep technical discussions and general tech news, Product Hunt serves as the go-to daily leaderboard for discovering new software, apps, and developer tools [1.0]. It's where founders go to debut products instead of just posting a Show HN link.
daily.dev - The Personalized Feed. Rather than a traditional community board, daily.dev acts as a professional network and news aggregator that delivers customized feeds shaped around specific programming languages, tools, and technical interests.
dev.to - The Friendly Community. A much more welcoming, constructive, and tutorial-heavy publishing platform compared to the sometimes-harsh debate style found on Hacker News. It's popular for developer blogging and career discussions.
Slashdot - The Old-School Ancestor. The classic tech news, editorials, and comment-board community that predates Hacker News. It covers broader IT and geek culture with an older demographic of system admins and engineers.
HackerNoon - The Long-Form Magazine. Focuses on editor-backed, long-form tech and startup articles rather than fast-moving link aggregations and rapid-fire comment threads.
Developer Subreddits / Fediverse (Lemmy) - Communities like r/programming, r/webdev , or federated Lemmy instances offer massive scale and niche-specific sub-communities, though with varying levels of noise and moderation compared to HN.

If you are looking to switch or expand your daily tech reading , let me know what your primary focus is (e.g., cybersecurity, AI research, frontend engineering, or startup launching) so I can recommend the best specific platform for you.
