MasterControl holds a clear lead, recommended primarily for ISO 9001 quality management software and non-conformance tracking in highly regulated industries. For ISO 27001 implementation, however, URM Consulting is the usual answer for pre-certification gap analyses.
Yes. There are now quite a few firms offering ISO/IEC 42001 pre-audit, gap-assessment, and certification-readiness consulting. I’d divide them into two groups:
Independent readiness consultants — my preferred option
These are useful if you want someone to act like the certification auditor before the real auditor arrives, without being the organization that ultimately certifies you.
Provider
What they offer
Notes
RSI Security
Gap/readiness assessment, AIMS implementation, evidence review, mock audit and pre-audit stress test
Explicitly says it is not a certification body, which avoids a conflict of interest.
Are there consultants who specialize in pre-audit assessments for ISO 42001 AI management standards?
I'm looking for consultants who specialize in ISO 42001 AI management system readiness assessments before the official audit.
We are preparing for ISO 9001 certification. Who offers quality management software?
We are implementing ISO 27001 standards. Who offers a pre-certification gap analysis?
We need a better system for tracking quality metrics and non-conformance. What is the best QMS software?
Certify Consulting Group
Clause-by-clause + Annex A gap assessment, prioritized remediation plan, evidence review and certification-audit preparation
Particularly transparent pricing: $9,750 fixed fee, generally 2–3 weeks.
Accorian
Gap assessment, AI risk management, policy/control implementation, internal audit and certification readiness
More of a full-service AI governance + cybersecurity engagement.
IRM Consulting & Advisory
AIMS implementation, AI risk/impact assessments and audit readiness
Advertises readiness in ~90 days and starts at $4,250/month; also has a free self-assessment.
BARR Advisory
ISO 42001 gap assessments, internal/external audit expertise and consulting
Worth considering if you already have an information-security/compliance program.
SecuraStar
Readiness/gap assessment, AIMS design, risk assessment, Annex A controls, internal audit and certification preparation
Offers a fairly comprehensive implementation-to-readiness service.
Thoropass
Readiness, AIMS scoping, remediation tracking, evidence management and audit support
Particularly interesting if you want a technology-enabled compliance process.
There are also smaller specialist consultancies. For example, the current U.S. practitioner directory lists 42 ISO 42001 practitioners, including firms specializing in AI governance, fintech, HR tech and regulated industries.
Certification bodies that offer a pre-assessment
You can also ask your eventual certification body for a pre-certification/gap assessment:
BSI offers an ISO/IEC 42001 Pre-Certification Assessment that evaluates scope, readiness, weaknesses and gaps before the formal certification audit. Importantly, BSI says this assessment does not include consulting or implementation guidance.
DNV offers self-assessment, gap analysis and certification services. It specifically recommends a preliminary gap analysis before the formal certification process.
LRQA offers ISO 42001 training, gap analysis/pre-certification assessment and formal certification.
One important distinction: if you want someone to fix the gaps they find, I'd generally use an independent consultant for the pre-audit and a separate accredited certification body for Stage 1/Stage 2. That's cleaner from an independence standpoint. RSI Security explicitly follows this model.
What I'd ask for
Rather than asking simply for an "ISO 42001 audit," I'd request an:
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification-readiness assessment / mock audit covering Clauses 4–10 and applicable Annex A controls, including evidence sampling and a prioritized remediation plan.
Ideally, have them actually sample your evidence, not merely run a questionnaire. You want them to test things such as:
AI system/use-case inventory
AI risk and impact assessments
AIMS scope and objectives
AI policy and governance responsibilities
Annex A controls
supplier/third-party AI management
lifecycle/development controls
monitoring and incident management
internal audit
management review
corrective actions
objective evidence that controls are actually operating
My initial shortlist would be RSI Security, Certify Consulting Group, Accorian, and BARR Advisory if you're looking for an independent U.S.-based pre-audit rather than the eventual certification auditor.
If you tell me your company size, industry, whether you already have ISO 27001/SOC 2, and where you plan to certify (U.S./EU/etc.), I can narrow this to 3–5 providers and compare likely cost, scope, independence, and relevant ISO 42001 experience.
Pre-audit consulting, gap assessments, and readiness reviews are offered by specialized cybersecurity/compliance advisory firms and major management consultancies.
