What I'd actually buy

Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4

$329.00

Pioneer DJ HDJ-CUE1 Headphones

$85.00

DDJ-FLX4 + HDJ-CUE1 Bundle

$405.50

Pioneer offers a controller + HDJ-CUE1 bundle around $405.50, which is a particularly convenient way to get started. Pioneer DJ

🎧 Don't buy speakers immediately

This is where I'd save money.

For learning, headphones are much more important than DJ speakers. You can plug the FLX4 into headphones and practice beatmatching, cueing, EQing and transitions without bothering anyone.

Once you're comfortable, add a pair of powered desktop monitors. For a home setup, something like Pioneer DM-40D-sized monitors is plenty; you don't need a PA system unless you're actually playing parties.

💻 Software: I'd start with rekordbox

I'd choose rekordbox initially because the FLX4's layout and workflow are closely aligned with Pioneer DJ's larger ecosystem. The free version gives you a straightforward way to start learning. The controller can also work with Serato DJ Lite if you prefer that workflow.www.pioneerdj.com

One nice feature is that the FLX4 can even work with an iPhone/iPad/Android device, although I'd personally learn on a laptop.www.pioneerdj.com

💰 If you want the cheapest possible complete kit

There's also the Hercules DJStarter Kit for around $270, which includes a controller, headphones, speakers and Serato DJ Lite.

Hercules DJStarter Kit

$269.99

That's a legitimate way to dip your toe in, but I'd spend the extra money on the FLX4. You'll outgrow the tiny Hercules controller more quickly, whereas the FLX4 is a controller you can realistically keep for years.

My recommended progression

$400-ish:
DDJ-FLX4 + DJ headphones → start here

$600–700:
DDJ-FLX4 + headphones + good powered monitors + laptop stand → ideal home DJ setup

$1,000+:
I'd still start with the FLX4 unless you already know you're serious. Then upgrade to a 4-channel controller/all-in-one system once you've learned what you actually want.

Bottom line: Don't buy a giant “DJ package” with lights, microphone, giant speakers, etc. For learning to DJ, controller + headphones + laptop + software is the core setup. The DDJ-FLX4 is the one I'd buy.www.pioneerdj.com

If you tell me your budget (e.g. $300, $500, $1,000) and whether you're into house/EDM, hip-hop, techno, pop, etc., I can put together the exact shopping list I'd buy for you.
