Trustwell and SafetyChain run nearly even, with Trustwell cited for supply chain traceability and SafetyChain recommended for plant-floor quality management. When teams need to scale culinary recipes into factory production with cost tracking, Meez is the usual answer.
Since July, Nulogyrising has gained ground across farm-to-fork traceability discussions. Trustwellrising has strengthened its position for FSMA compliance, while TraceGainsrising is now among the most recommended for supply chain tracking.

I'm looking for a workflow to scale recipes for different batch sizes that also provides automatic calculations for ingredient costs and profit margins.
That way, if butter goes from $40 to $46, you change the price once in the Ingredients sheet and every recipe using butter automatically updates. This linked-price-book approach is also used by current recipe-costing templates.
If you tell me whether you're using Excel or Google Sheets, I can lay out the exact spreadsheet columns and formulas so you can enter a recipe once and type “make 25 / 50 / 100 units” to have everything—including ingredient quantities, total cost, cost per unit, selling price, and profit—calculate automatically.
Adjusting recipe quantities while scaling costs and profit margins is easiest when you set up a dynamic system . You can accomplish this using a structured spreadsheet or specialized software.
Step 1: Build the Core Pricing Database (The Foundation)
Before scaling any recipe, you need a master inventory list that standardizes your ingredient costs into the exact units you buy and use.
Ingredient Name: The raw item (e.g., All-Purpose Flour).
Purchase Unit: How you buy it (e.g., 5 l b bag).
Purchase Cost: What you pay for it (e.g.,$1 2.5 0).
Recipe Unit: How you measure it in recipes (e.g., ounces or grams).
Unit Cost Calculation: The cost per recipe unit, calculated in LaTeX as Purchase Cost Total Units in Purchase the fraction with numerator Purchase Cost and denominator Total Units in Purchase end-fraction P u r c h a s e C o s t T o t a l U n i t s i n P u r c h a s e (e.g.,$1 2.5 0÷8 0 o z=$0.1 5 6 p e r o z).
Step 2: Set Up the Scalable Recipe Template
Create a master recipe sheet where quantities adjust automatically based on a single multiplier or desired yield.
Base Yield: The original number of servings or batch size the recipe makes (e.g., 1 2 c o o k i e s).
Target Yield: The new number of servings or batch size you actually want to make (e.g., 6 0 c o o k i e s).
Scaling Multiplier: The factor by which you multiply each ingredient, calculated as Target Yield Base Yield the fraction with numerator Target Yield and denominator Base Yield end-fraction T a r g e t Y i e l d B a s e Y i e l d (6 0÷1 2=5).
Scaled Quantity: For each ingredient, multiply the original amount by the scaling multiplier (B a s e Q u a n t i t y×S c a l i n g M u l t i p l i e r).
Line Item Cost: Multiply the scaled quantity by the unit cost from your database (S c a l e d Q u a n t i t y×U n i t C o s t).
Step 3: Calculate Total Cost and Profit Margins
Once you sum up all your individual ingredient line item costs, you can layer in business metrics to find your profit margins.
Total Batch Cost: The sum of all scaled ingredient costs (∑L i n e I t e m C o s t s).
Cost Per Unit: Divide the total batch cost by the target yield (Total Batch Cost Target Yield the fraction with numerator Total Batch Cost and denominator Target Yield end-fraction T o t a l B a t c h C o s t T a r g e t Y i e l d).
Target Selling Price per Unit: What you plan to charge the customer per item or serving.
Profit per Unit: S e l l i n g P r i c e−C o s t P e r U n i t.
Profit Margin Percentage: Calculated as P r o f i t p e r U n i t S e l l i n g P r i c e×1 0 0%.
Step 4: Choose Your Tool
Spreadsheets (Excel or Google Sheets): Best for absolute control and custom formulas. You can use XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP to pull unit costs directly from your master inventory list into your recipe sheets.
Recipe Costing Software: If you prefer an automated app that handles inventory tracking, scaling, and margin targets without manual formulas, platforms like Foodcalc or Meez are built specifically for this workflow.
If you want, tell me:
Are you planning to build this in Excel/Google Sheets or use a dedicated app?
What kind of food or product are you scaling?
I can help you write the exact formulas or set up the layout for your calculations.
For what you're describing, I'd build a recipe scaling and costing workflow that connects three things: batch-size calculations, ingredient purchasing costs, and profit margins. That way, you can change a recipe from 12 servings to 50 or 200 and immediately see how much it costs to produce, what to charge, and how much profit you can expect.
The key is to maintain one master recipe for each product and have every batch size calculate from that source, rather than maintaining separate recipes and costing sheets.
Recommended workflow
1. Build a master recipe library
Record each ingredient, its base quantity, measurement unit, recipe yield, and preparation notes. Keep a standardized unit system so that grams, kilograms, milliliters, and liters convert consistently.
2. Enter ingredient purchase prices
Store the supplier price, package size, usable quantity, and unit cost. For example, if 5 kg of flour costs $12.50, the flour costs $0.0025 per gram.
3. Scale the batch automatically
Enter the target yield, and multiply every ingredient quantity by the same scaling factor. Account for expected waste, cooking loss, and equipment limits where necessary.
4. Calculate cost and profitability
Automatically calculate total ingredient cost, cost per unit, packaging and labor costs, suggested selling price, gross profit, and gross margin.
Software options worth considering
These are three tools I'd shortlist based on how much automation you want.
1. meez
Best for restaurants and professional kitchens
Supports batch scaling, unit conversions, preparation yields, ingredient-cost tracking, and menu profitability analysis. It can connect with vendor invoice data to keep costs updated.
Offers ingredient-cost calculations, batch scaling, waste adjustments, packaging and overhead costs, and live margin simulations. Its listed free tier is useful for trying out a smaller recipe library.
Connects recipes and material costs with packaging, labor, overhead, inventory, production batches, orders, and profitability. Worth considering if you sell packaged products or make goods in batches.
For example, if a product costs $2.40 to make and sells for $6.00, its gross profit is $3.60 and its gross margin is 60%, before any additional expenses excluded from that production cost.
One important distinction: margin and markup are not the same thing. A 60% target margin on a $2.40 cost requires a selling price of $6.00, not $3.84.
Let's tailor the workflow to your business
The best setup depends on what you're producing and whether you prefer a spreadsheet or dedicated software.
Transitioning a culinary concept or test-kitchen formula into a full-scale industrial manufacturing batch requires Recipe & Formula Management Software or specialized Food and Beverage ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.
These platforms bridge the gap between R&D and production by automatically scaling volumetric or small-weight measurements into massive industrial batches while tracking real-time ingredient costs, margins, and yield losses.
Key software categories and tools used for this transition include:

One important distinction: scaling ingredient quantities is only part of factory recipe management. For production, look for yield and processing-loss adjustments, ingredient purchasing costs, labor and packaging costs, formula version control, and batch traceability.
What kind of food are you manufacturing — sauces, baked goods, prepared meals, beverages, or something else? I can narrow this down to the best fit for your production process and cost-control requirements.
