Yes. The key distinction is “generate docs from the API definition produced by code” versus “generate docs directly from annotations/types in the source.” For your problem, the latter is the most interesting.
| Tool | How it stays in sync | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| NestJS Swagger | Generates OpenAPI from TypeScript decorators/types; its CLI plugin can infer many annotations automatically | TypeScript/NestJS |
| springdoc-openapi |

I need an automated solution that uses AI to parse our codebase and generate up-to-date API references and technical manuals.
We need an AI tool that connects to our source code to keep our technical documentation and API references synced and up to date automatically.
Google AI ModeSep 20, 2026
Our internal documentation is always out of date. Is there an AI service that can scan our codebase and automatically generate and update our technical docs and API references?
| Inspects Spring Boot configuration, classes, and annotations to generate OpenAPI |
| Java/Spring Boot |
| FastAPI | Generates OpenAPI + interactive docs directly from Python type hints and route declarations | Python |
| Scalar | Renders excellent docs from the resulting OpenAPI spec; doesn't itself generally infer the spec from arbitrary source code | Modern OpenAPI workflow |
| Redocly / Redoc | Generates API reference from OpenAPI; good for CI/CD and spec governance | OpenAPI-first teams |
| Fern | Takes OpenAPI/AsyncAPI/etc. and generates hosted docs plus SDKs | Docs + SDK generation |
| Mintlify | Generates API reference pages from OpenAPI and combines them with Git-based documentation | Full developer portal |
The important architecture is usually:
code + annotations/types → OpenAPI automatically → rendered documentation
rather than manually maintaining a second documentation system. For example, NestJS explicitly generates an OpenAPI specification from decorators, and its CLI plugin can derive properties from TypeScript types and validation decorators so you don't have to manually scatter documentation decorators everywhere.
For Spring Boot, springdoc-openapi similarly examines application configuration, class structure, and annotations and produces OpenAPI JSON/YAML plus HTML documentation.
I'd shortlist:
One caveat: tools like Mintlify, Fern, Scalar, and Redocly generally consume an OpenAPI document; they aren't magic source-code parsers for arbitrary applications. The framework integration that creates that OpenAPI document is what makes the “docs directly from code” workflow possible.
If you tell me your stack (e.g. TypeScript/NestJS, Java/Spring, Python/FastAPI, Go, .NET), I can narrow this to the 2–3 tools that will require the least annotation/maintenance.
To keep your documentation from drifting away from your codebase, shifting to a code-first approach (generating documentation directly from annotations, decorators, or docstrings) is a great move.
The standard workflow for this involves two parts: a library in your tech stack that scans your code annotations to output an OpenAPI/Swagger spec, and a documentation renderer that turns that spec into a polished portal.
You add inline comments or decorators to your routes and controllers, and these language-specific tools parse them into a standardized JSON/YAML file during your build or CI/CD process:[](https://swagger.io/blog/api-documentation-made-easy-with-openapi-and-swagger/)[[2](https://swagger.io/blog/swagger-annotation-libraries)](https://swagger.io/blog/swagger-annotation-libraries/)
Once your annotations generate an OpenAPI spec file, you feed that file into a documentation hub that updates automatically when code changes:
If you share what programming language or framework your API is built with, I can give you a quick code snippet example of how these annotations look in your specific stack.
When choosing the best documentation generator for a REST API that hits the trifecta of beautiful, interactive , and shareable , the right choice depends heavily on whether you want a hosted developer portal (all-in-one publishing) or a modern open-source renderer driven by your OpenAPI/Swagger spec.[](https://www.gitbook.com/blog/best-api-docs-sdk-generation-tools)[[2](https://docsio.co/blog/scalar-api-documentation)](https://docsio.co/blog/scalar-api-documentation)
The top contenders dominate the landscape for modern REST API documentation:

If your priority is beautiful + interactive + shareable REST API docs, I’d shortlist Scalar, Redocly, and Stoplight. All three work from an OpenAPI specification, so your API definition remains the source of truth.
| Tool | Best fit | Interactive | Site quality | Hosting/shareability | Open source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
For a professional, maintainable REST API documentation setup, I’d shortlist these:
A common maintainable pattern is:
openapi.yaml/openapi.json file as the source of truth. For most engineering teams wanting “professional-looking + easy to maintain,” I’d start with Redocly + OpenAPI.
Google AI ModeSep 20, 2026
When looking for REST API documentation that hits that sweet spot of looking professional and being easy to maintain , the gold standard is a docs-as-code or OpenAPI-driven workflow . Instead of writing docs in a standalone CMS, you maintain an OpenAPI/Swagger spec (or MDX files) tied to your Git repository, and let a specialized platform handle the gorgeous rendering, interactive "Try It" consoles, and search.[](https://swagger.io/)[[2](https://www.mintlify.com/library/best-api-docs-and-sdk-generation-tools)](https://www.mintlify.com/library/best-api-docs-and-sdk-generation-tools)
The top-tier options vary based on your team's exact workflow and budget:
If your API documentation is constantly out of date, relying on manual updates or pure text files is a losing battle. The secret to fixing "docs drift" isn't just a better markdown editor—it's shifting to a code-first (or spec-first) workflow where the documentation is generated as part of your CI/CD build pipeline.
The "best" tool depends entirely on your programming language and whether you are building a Web API (REST/GraphQL) or an Internal/Library Code API (like Python modules or C++ classes).
If your goal is documenting HTTP endpoints, parameters, and JSON payloads, the industry standard approach is generating an OpenAPI Specification (OAS) file from your code comments/annotations, and then rendering that spec into a gorgeous UI.
swagger-jsdoc (or equivalent for your stack)
openapi.json file on every build. If you aren't building a web service, but rather a software library, package, or internal SDK where you need to parse function signatures and docstrings:
mkdocstrings (for Python/MkDocs)
mkdocstrings integrates into a markdown pipeline.[](https://ferndesk.com/blog/best-automated-software-documentation)No matter which tool you pick, do not generate and check-in documentation manually on your local machine.
Instead, configure a GitHub Action / GitLab CI job that runs on every merge to main:
If it isn't automated in the pipeline, someone will forget to run the command, and the docs will drift within a month.

If your core problem is “the API docs drift from the code”, I’d distinguish two approaches:
| Modern, polished developer portals |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Yes |
| Redocly | Highly polished API reference + enterprise docs | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Partly |
| Stoplight | Full documentation platform + API design | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Elements |
| Mintlify | Beautiful general developer docs | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | No |
| Swagger UI | Simple, familiar API explorer | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Yes |
Scalar is particularly compelling if what you mean by "beautiful" is modern SaaS-style documentation rather than traditional Swagger UI.
It takes an OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 document and produces a polished interactive reference with endpoint exploration, code samples, and a Test Request interface. It can be hosted by Scalar, self-hosted, or embedded directly into your application.
More importantly, Scalar Docs lets you combine the API reference with Markdown/MDX guides, landing pages, custom themes, GitHub syncing, custom domains, and versioning—so you're building an actual documentation website rather than merely rendering openapi.json.
Redocly produces exceptionally polished API references and has extensive theming, search, responsive three-panel layouts, code samples, custom domains, and an integrated "Try it" console.
It's particularly attractive if you have multiple APIs, versions, governance requirements, or a larger developer portal.
Stoplight goes beyond rendering documentation. It combines OpenAPI-powered interactive references with Markdown guides, code samples, API catalogs, custom branding, search, and private/public developer hubs.
It's a strong choice if your team wants to design, govern, document, and publish APIs in one workflow.
For a typical modern SaaS REST API, my architecture would be:
Your API
│
└── OpenAPI 3.1
│
▼
Scalar
│
├── Interactive API reference
├── "Try it" requests
├── Code examples
├── Getting Started guide
├── Authentication guide
└── Webhooks / concepts / tutorials
│

docs.yourcompany.comScalar is probably the one I'd try first if the goal is specifically "I want my API docs to look fantastic when I send the URL to a developer." Its renderer is MIT-licensed and can also be self-hosted, while the hosted Docs product adds the full documentation-site experience.
If you tell me your stack (FastAPI, Express/NestJS, Laravel, Rails, .NET, Go, etc.) and whether you want free/self-hosted or SaaS, I can narrow this down to the best 1–2 options and show you exactly what the resulting docs site would look like architecturally.
To help narrow down the ideal choice for your team, tell me:
So, for the exact problem you described, I'd start with DocuWriter.ai if you want the tool to read your existing code and keep API reference documentation synchronized with it. If your API already has a reliable OpenAPI definition, I'd instead put that spec in Git and automatically render it with something like Redocly or Mintlify.
If you tell me your stack (e.g. FastAPI/Python, Express/TypeScript, Spring/Java, .NET, Go), I can narrow this to the most appropriate tool and workflow.
