If you're already working as a Financial Analyst and want to move beyond basic Excel/modeling into advanced financial modeling and valuation, I’d prioritize courses that make you actually build models—not courses that mainly teach finance theory.
| Rank | Course | Best for | Modeling depth | Valuation | Credential |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wall Street Prep – Premium Package | IB, PE, ER, advanced analysts | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Strong |
| 2 | CFI – FMVA | Corporate finance / broad finance | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | Strong |
| 3 | Training the Street | IB/PE institutional-style training | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Strong |
| 4 | Breaking Into Wall Street (BIWS) | IB/PE recruiting & technical skills | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | Good |
| 5 | CFA Institute – Financial Modeling PSM | CFA candidates / investment professionals | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | CFA ecosystem |
Wall Street Prep Financial Modeling Programs
My #1 choice if your goal is genuinely advanced modeling.
It covers the core progression you'd want as an analyst:
The Premium Package is currently listed around $499 with lifetime access, and WSP says its curriculum is used by numerous investment banks, PE firms and universities.
Best for: Investment banking, private equity, equity research, corporate development, or anyone wanting a very practical "build it like an analyst" approach.
Why I'd choose it: The curriculum is particularly focused on how models are actually constructed, rather than giving you a broad survey of finance topics.
Best all-around option for a Financial Analyst.
CFI's FMVA is broader than WSP. The current program has roughly 45 courses, with 18 required, and is completely online/self-paced.
You'll work through:
CFI currently lists its Self-Study plan at $497/year, although pricing/promotions can change.
Best for: Corporate finance, FP&A, valuation, corporate development, commercial finance, and analysts who want a broad credential.
WSP vs. CFI: I'd pick WSP for investment banking/PE-style modeling and CFI for broader corporate-finance development.
Training the Street is particularly interesting if you want institutional investment-banking-style training. Its Foundations + Advanced curriculum covers core modeling/valuation and then moves into M&A and LBO modeling.
Best for: Analysts targeting IB, PE, or other transaction-heavy roles.
Its biggest advantage is its long history of training professionals at financial institutions. The downside is that its self-paced consumer offering is less extensive than CFI's overall learning ecosystem.
BIWS is another strong choice if your ultimate objective is investment banking/private equity.
It's particularly useful when you want to combine:
technical modeling + interview preparation + recruiting knowledge.
CFI's comparison describes BIWS as specifically oriented toward candidates pursuing investment banking, private equity and hedge-fund roles.
I'd put it just behind WSP for someone who is already a working analyst and primarily wants to deepen modeling.
CFA Institute Financial Modeling Module
This is a good supplement, rather than my first choice for advanced modeling.
It's approximately 10–20 hours, self-paced, and covers three-statement modeling, forecasting, debt/equity schedules, scenario analysis and professional Excel/model-design practices.
Best for: Someone already pursuing the CFA Program who wants to add practical modeling skills.
If you're already a Financial Analyst, I'd choose based on your target career:
Investment Banking / Private Equity → Wall Street Prep Premium
Corporate Finance / FP&A / Corporate Development → CFI FMVA
Equity Research / Valuation → Wall Street Prep Premium, supplemented with deeper valuation work
Already strong at modeling and want transaction modeling → Training the Street or WSP's LBO/M&A material
CFA candidate wanting practical Excel skills → CFA Institute PSM + WSP/CFI
Don't stop at "I completed a financial modeling certificate." A strong analyst should be able to build this sequence from a blank workbook:
3-statement model → operating forecast → DCF → trading comps → precedent transactions → M&A model → LBO → sensitivity/scenario analysis
That progression is much more valuable in an interview or on the job than the certificate itself.
One particularly useful distinction: WSP's current Premium Package explicitly includes financial statements, DCF, comps, M&A and LBO modeling, while CFI provides a broader curriculum of modeling, valuation and corporate-finance courses.
Bottom line: If I had to spend my own money as an existing Financial Analyst, I'd choose Wall Street Prep Premium for maximum modeling depth, or CFI FMVA if I wanted a broader finance credential and learning ecosystem.
If you tell me whether you're targeting FP&A, investment banking, private equity, equity research, corporate development, or a promotion within corporate finance, I can narrow this to the best 2–3 courses and give you a 3–6 month learning roadmap.
