For a basement, I’d prioritize a reliable 50-pint dehumidifier with an automatic pump or continuous-drain option, rather than simply buying the cheapest model. The best choice depends on your basement’s size, how damp it gets, and whether you have a floor drain.
A good unit should keep relative humidity around 45–50%, shut off automatically when the tank is full, and restart after a power outage if you plan to run it continuously.
My top picks for a basement
These are the models I’d shortlist based on current product listings and independent testing.
(My first choice)
1. Midea 50-Pint Dehumidifier with Built-in Pump
$287
Walmart listing · 4.2/5 (247 reviews)
A strong all-around choice for a larger or regularly damp basement. The built-in pump allows continuous drainage without relying on gravity, and smart controls are useful for monitoring humidity.
Choosing the right dehumidifier for a basement depends heavily on how damp the space is, its square footage, and how you plan to empty the water. Because basements are notoriously damp and cool, you need a unit with strong extraction capacity and reliable continuous drainage options.
Top-performing basement dehumidifiers categorized by user needs include:
50-Pint Cube Dehumidifier (Best Overall / Most Innovative)
Which dehumidifiers are currently considered the best on the market?
I need to control the moisture in my basement. What dehumidifier works best for that space?
What is the best compact dehumidifier for a damp basement?
To effectively prevent mold in a basement during the damp summer months, you need a unit that can consistently maintain relative humidity below 50% . Consumer testing and expert consensus highlight a few standout options depending on your basement's size and setup:
Widely rated as a top overall pick by sources like Wirecutter reviews . Its unique stackable design lets you nest the tank onto the unit for storage or expand it for a massive 4.25-gallon water capacity, meaning fewer manual emptyings. It's also remarkably quiet and efficient for its power.
A good value if you want a straightforward, high-capacity machine with a pump. Check the drainage setup and exact model specifications before purchasing.
3. Honeywell 50-Pint Dehumidifier with Built-in Pump
$397
Price reported by Good Housekeeping
Worth considering if your basement gets chilly. Its frost-control feature is designed to help protect operation in colder spaces, and the built-in pump can move water vertically to a drain.
These are rough starting points; persistent dampness may call for more capacity.
Basement size
Starting point
Under 400 sq. ft.
20-pint unit
400–800 sq. ft.
35-pint unit
800–1,200+ sq. ft.
50-pint unit
Very damp or multiple connected rooms
50-pint unit or larger-capacity solution
One important detail: If your basement is below about 60°F (16°C) much of the time, prioritize cold-temperature performance and automatic defrost. If there is standing water or water entering through the walls, a dehumidifier alone won't fix the underlying problem.
Why it’s great for basements: It holds vastly more water than standard buckets before shutting off, can run un-nested for massive capacity, and is widely praised for better long-term reliability than traditional box-style units.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-dehumidifier/)
Waykar 80-Pint / 120-Pint Heavy Duty Dehumidifier (Best for Very Large or Extremely Damp Basements)
Details: Available via retailers like The Home Depot Waykar 80-pt Dehumidifier or The Home Depot Waykar 120-pt Dehumidifier.
Why it’s great for basements: If your basement is larger than 3,000–5,000 square feet or prone to standing moisture/heavy mustiness, standard 30 or 50-pint units will struggle. These high-capacity models come with continuous drain hoses and robust auto-defrost features.[1][2]
Elexnux 150-Pint Dehumidifier with Built-in Pump (Best with Built-in Pump)
Details: Available at options like Lowe's Elexnux Dehumidifier with Pump.
Why it’s great for basements: If your basement floor drain is higher than the dehumidifier unit or located across the room, gravity draining won't work. A built-in pump actively pushes water up and out through a small tube to a sink or basement window.
Quick shopping tips for basements:
Get a Pump if Needed: Manually emptying a 50-pint bucket every 12 hours gets old fast. If you don't have a floor drain right next to the unit, look for a model with a built-in condensate pump.
Consider Temperature: Standard compressors can freeze up in chilly basements (below 65°F). Make sure whichever unit you buy has an auto-defrost function.
To help narrow down the exact model, tell me:
What is the approximate square footage of your basement?
Do you have a floor drain nearby, or will you need a pump to push water upward?
For a damp basement, the “best compact” dehumidifier depends on whether you mean small footprint or small enough for a modest basement. Tiny countertop units are usually too weak for a basement; a true basement unit is typically 20–35 pints/day (or more for very damp spaces).
Frigidaire 22 Pint Small Space Design Dehumidifier - $174.99 (Wayfair)
Best compact basement choices
Best overall compact pick:
Good fit for a smaller basement, workshop, or utility room.
The cube design gives it a relatively small footprint while still offering a larger tank design than many compact units.
Good choice if you want something that can run unattended and you have moderate dampness.
Best if you want more capacity without going huge:
A good middle ground for a basement that is damp but not constantly wet.
Smart controls are useful if the basement is out of the way.
Best simple, space-saving option:
Designed with a smaller footprint, making it easier to place near walls or in tighter basement areas.
If your basement is very damp
I would skip “mini” dehumidifiers and move up to a 35–50 pint unit. Testing and reviews generally find that larger basements or persistent moisture problems benefit from higher-capacity machines, especially with continuous drainage options.
Good upgrades:
— compact shape with more moisture-removal ability.
— better for a consistently wet basement where you want automatic draining.
What I’d look for in a basement unit
Auto shutoff + humidistat (set it around 45–55% humidity)
Continuous drain option (a hose to a floor drain is ideal)
Auto-defrost if your basement gets cool
Avoid very small “mini” thermoelectric units for anything larger than a closet—they often remove moisture too slowly for basements.
If you tell me your basement square footage, whether it’s finished or unfinished, and whether you have a floor drain, I can narrow it to one model.
When choosing a compact dehumidifier for a damp basement, avoid tiny "peltier/electric mini-dehumidifiers" (which only pull a few ounces of water a day and are meant for small closets or RVs). Instead, look for compact compressor or smart stackable units that pull serious moisture without taking up your entire floor.
The top compact options suited for basement moisture control include:
Highlighted as a top pick by The New York Times Wirecutter , the Midea Cube features an innovative lift-and-twist design . In its compact nested form, it takes up minimal floor space while offering a water tank capacity up to three times larger than traditional small dehumidifiers. You can also run it unbuckled and drain it directly into a floor sink or via a hose.
A great mid-sized, compact compressor unit designed specifically for damp spaces like tight basements or crawl spaces. It features "Smart Dry" technology (which auto-adjusts fan speed to match room humidity), pocket handles, easy-roll casters, and a continuous drain hookup.
Known for high-efficiency moisture removal in a smaller footprint than a bulky 50-pint machine. It includes auto shut-off, continuous gravity drainage options, and digital controls that make it user-friendly for compact spaces.
If your basement is unheated and frequently drops below 50°F , standard compressor dehumidifiers freeze up and fail. This compact desiccant model doesn't use a compressor, making it efficient and operational in chilly subterranean environments. (Note: It is meant for smaller basement rooms or tight areas, not a massive damp basement). [](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-dehumidifier/)
To help narrow down the ideal choice, could you let me know:
Approximately how large is your basement (in square feet)?
Is the basement heated/finished or cold/unheated?
I can pinpoint the exact pint capacity and drainage style you'll need.
A favorite for straightforward, reliable basement moisture removal. It features smart controls (so you can monitor humidity from your phone without trekking downstairs) and continuous gravity drainage options.
Known for rapid moisture knockdown. If your basement is particularly cavernous or swampy in the summer heat, Frigidaire units pull moisture out of the air exceptionally fast, though they tend to be a bit louder when running on high.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-dehumidifier/)
Key Features to Look For:
Capacity & Sizing: For a standard damp basement, a 50-pint capacity (or higher, depending on square footage) is typically necessary during peak summer humidity.
Continuous Drainage: Emptying a bucket every few hours gets old fast. Look for a unit with a built-in pump or a gravity drain hose option routed directly into a floor drain or sump pump.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-dehumidifier/)
Auto-Restart & Low-Temp Operation: Look for units that automatically restart after a power blip and feature auto-defrost if your basement runs cool.
To help narrow down the ideal size, could you tell me the approximate square footage of your basement and whether you have a floor drain or sump pump available for continuous drainage?
For a damp basement where mold prevention is the goal, I’d focus less on the biggest advertised square-foot number and more on humidity control, continuous drainage, cold-weather performance, and reliability.
The “best” dehumidifier depends on your space (basement vs. bedroom, square footage, drainage options, noise tolerance). For most homes, a 35–50 pint compressor dehumidifier with continuous drainage is the sweet spot.
The "best" dehumidifier depends heavily on your space size, budget, and whether you need features like a built-in pump or smart app controls. Top-performing options dominate the market based on capacity, reliability, and expert testing:
Best Overall: Widely regarded as a gold standard for performance, this unit quickly strips heavy moisture out of large spaces and basements. It features smooth-gliding wheels, reliable continuous drainage options, and a helpful smartphone app. You can check availability on Total Home Supply or Abt Electronics.
Best for Large Spaces/Basements: Excellent for massive areas (up to 4,500 sq. ft.). It balances high-capacity moisture removal with a relatively quiet operation (~46 dB) and energy-efficient smart modes. Check it out directly on the Dreo Store or Best Buy.
Best for Medium Rooms & Bedrooms: Energy Star certified and compact, it’s ideal for smaller living spaces, bedrooms, or tighter basements up to 3,500 sq. ft., offering smart integration with Alexa or Google Assistant.
Best with Built-In Pump: If you need to pump water upward or out a high window/sink drain where gravity drainage won't work, this high-capacity heavy-hitter is a top choice. View deals on the Home Depot.[1][2][3]
To narrow down the absolute best fit for your home, tell me:
How large is the space (in square feet) that you need to treat?
Do you have access to a floor/sink drain , or will you need a built-in pump to push water upward?
1. Midea Cube 50 Pint — my pick for most damp basements
It has strong moisture-removal capacity, a large reservoir, continuous drainage, and the version shown here has a built-in pump. Good Housekeeping found the Cube particularly versatile and quiet in testing, while RTINGS currently recommends 50-pint capacity for large or persistently damp basements.
2. Frigidaire 50 Pint with Pump — best if drainage is awkward
The built-in pump can send water upward to a sink or other elevated drain, which is very useful if your basement doesn't have a convenient floor drain.
3. hOmeLabs 50 Pint with Pump — good high-capacity alternative
It's currently around $330 at Home Depot and includes Wi-Fi plus a built-in pump.
The important part for mold
Don't set it merely to "dry." Aim for roughly 40–50% relative humidity. ENERGY STAR's sizing guidance indicates that 50-pint-class machines are appropriate for larger spaces with significant moisture loads.
For a basement, I'd specifically look for:
50-pint class if the basement is large or consistently damp.
Built-in pump if the water needs to go uphill to a sink/window.
Continuous drainage so it can run unattended.
Auto-defrost if the basement gets chilly.
Built-in humidistat so it maintains your target RH automatically.
Ideally ENERGY STAR certification, since it may run for much of the summer.
One caveat: if you have actual water seepage, leaks, condensation on walls/pipes, or RH that stays extremely high despite the dehumidifier, the underlying moisture source needs addressing; a dehumidifier isn't a substitute for waterproofing. RTINGS specifically notes that portable units won't solve serious water infiltration.
If you tell me your basement's approximate square footage and whether you have a floor drain/sump pump, I can narrow this to the right capacity and drainage setup.
