Finding an AI video upscaler that sharpens details without introducing "hallucinations" (inventing fake textures like plastic skin or distorted text) or shimmering artifacts is tough because aggressive generative models love to over-cook frames.
To avoid the plastic/hallucinatory look, you want tools that rely on traditional or conservative, physics-aware restoration models rather than wild diffusion-heavy "creative" AI.
Here are the top options that prioritize clean, artifact-free precision:
- Topaz Video AI : Widely considered the industry standard for intermediate-to-pro work. Models like Proteus or Recover allow you to manually dial back the "add detail/sharpen" parameters. If you keep enhancement sliders low and use it strictly for structural resolution scaling and conservative denoising, it avoids hallucinations much better than competitors. You can check it out on the Topaz Labs Official Site.
- chaiNNer (Open-Source / Node-based) : If you want total control and $0 cost, chaiNNer on GitHub lets you build node graphs using pure, non-hallucinatory traditional and lightweight AI models (like Real-ESRGAN variants, DAT, or Lanczos scaling). Because you pick the exact model and can blend it with basic sharpening or super-sampling, you have absolute power over preventing generative hallucinations.
- DaVinci Resolve (Super Scale) : Built right into the professional editing software, DaVinci's proprietary algorithm focuses heavily on multi-layered pixel estimation rather than generative AI hallucination. It won't magically invent a face where there are zero pixels, but it will scale up clean lines and edges without making your video look like an AI-generated fever dream. Details are available on the Blackmagic Design Page.
