Tokens Studio holds a narrow lead over Supernova for managing nested design tokens and multi-theme Git syncing. When designers need to create and share complete design systems with developers, no single tool stands out.
The leading options categorized by their strengths in token architecture and version control include:
Supernova : Best for end-to-end lockstep versioning of tokens, UI components, and documentation. It uses a dedicated "draft vs. published release" model (supporting semantic versioning) so engineering teams can bind pipelines to frozen snapshots rather than live, chaotic work-in-progress edits.[](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpR3FOnU16A)[[2]()]()
If you tell me where your source of truth currently lives (e.g., purely in Figma, split across code and design, or managed via JSON) and how you handle code delivery (GitHub, npm, style dictionary), I can recommend the optimal tool stack for your team.
For managing design tokens with reliable versioning, review, and release workflows, I’d shortlist Tokens Studio, Supernova, and Knapsack. The best choice depends on whether you primarily need token-to-code synchronization, an all-in-one design-system manager, or enterprise governance.
Best design-system managers compared
1. Tokens Studio
(Best for token management)
Ideal if designers work in Figma and developers need tokens tracked in Git. Strong for token sets, themes, reusable references, and syncing token changes into a code repository.
Best for: Teams that want control of tokens without replacing their existing engineering workflow.
Connects design-system data, tokens, documentation, and code delivery. Worth evaluating if you want published system versions and less manual coordination between designers and engineers.
Best for: Teams that want a more unified design-to-development workflow.
Best suited to larger organizations that need governed changes, reviewable releases, component documentation, and coordination across multiple teams or brands.
Best for: Enterprise design systems with formal ownership and approval requirements.
Published versions of tokens, docs, and system assets
Supernova
Enterprise approvals and governance
Knapsack
These are best-fit recommendations, not a claim that other tools lack the feature entirely. The distinction between token history, published system releases, and enterprise governance matters.
My recommendation
Small or midsize product team: Tokens Studio + GitHub + Style Dictionary.
Want a managed platform with documentation and release publishing: Evaluate Supernova.
Large organization with multiple teams, brands, and approval workflows: Evaluate Knapsack alongside Supernova.
One important rule: keep version history in a system that supports reviewable changes, tagged releases, and rollback. A token manager alone doesn't guarantee safe releases to production.
If design tokens are your top priority, I’d focus on platforms that do more than store colors, typography, and spacing. The strongest options help you manage token relationships, support themes and multiple brands, synchronize design with code, and maintain a reliable source of truth.
For 2026, my shortlist is Tokens Studio, Supernova, Specify, and Figma Variables, with zeroheight worth considering if documentation is also a major requirement. These tools address different parts of the design-system workflow, so the best choice depends on whether you want a dedicated token engine or a broader platform.
Best design system platforms for design tokens
1. Tokens Studio
(Best for token management)
Ideal if you work in Figma and need sophisticated token authoring, token sets, aliases, themes, and a workflow connecting design decisions to code. It also supports an open ecosystem and Git-based workflows.
Why it stands out: Token-focused workflows without forcing your entire team into a single design-system platform.
Watch out for: You may need additional tools for component documentation and broader design-system governance.
Explore:
2. Supernova
(Best end-to-end platform)
A strong candidate if you want token management alongside documentation, component information, multi-brand support, and automated delivery to code.
Why it stands out: It connects design, implementation, and published documentation instead of treating tokens as isolated files.
Watch out for: It may be more platform than you need if your only requirement is token editing and export.
Explore:
3. Specify
Best if your priority is building a structured token pipeline across design tools and development environments.
Why it stands out: Worth evaluating for centralized design data, integrations, and automated distribution of design assets and tokens.
Watch out for: Validate the exact integrations, token transformations, and contribution workflow your stack requires.
Explore:
4. Figma Variables
Best if designers already do most of their work in Figma and you want to start with native tooling.
Why it stands out: Variables, collections, and modes provide a practical foundation for reusable values and themes.
Watch out for: A native design-side solution may not be enough for complex cross-platform code generation, Git workflows, or centralized enterprise governance.
Explore:
5. zeroheight
Best if your team needs accessible design-system documentation, published guidelines, and a way to present and manage tokens for designers and developers.
Why it stands out: Token management is integrated into a documentation-oriented workflow.
Watch out for: If token transformation and design-to-code automation are the primary goals, compare it carefully with a token-first platform.

My recommendation by use case
For the best token-focused workflow
Start with Tokens Studio. It is my first evaluation for teams that need detailed token authoring and a bridge between Figma and code.
For an enterprise-wide design system
Evaluate Supernova, especially if token delivery, documentation, component governance, and multiple brands need to work together.
For a developer-led, open workflow
Consider Tokens Studio with Style Dictionary and Git. This gives you a customizable token pipeline without requiring one platform to handle everything.
For design-system adoption and documentation
Choose zeroheight if publishing guidance and making the system easy for the wider organization to use are the biggest challenges.
What to evaluate before choosing
Don't judge these platforms just by how attractive their token editor looks. Test these six capabilities with a realistic sample of your own design system:
Token aliases: Can semantic tokens reference primitive tokens and update correctly?
Theming: Can you support light/dark modes, brand variants, and platform-specific values without duplicating everything?
Design-to-code sync: Can token changes flow reliably from design into version-controlled code?
Developer output: Can you export CSS variables, JSON, iOS, and Android formats as needed?
Governance: Can you track ownership, changes, approvals, and deprecated tokens?
Standards and portability: Can you import and export the W3C Design Tokens format without losing important metadata or relationships?
One particularly important point: decide where your source of truth will live. A token system becomes difficult to maintain when Figma, JSON files, and production code can all independently overwrite one another.
One question to narrow this down
What matters most in your situation?
1. What's your primary goal?
Advanced token management, aliases, themes, and token sets
Reliable design-to-code synchronization and automation
Enterprise governance and multiple brands
Documentation and adoption across teams
2. What's your main design tool?
Figma
Code/Git is the source of truth
Multiple design tools
Other / starting from scratch
3. What size is your team?
Small team (1–5 people)
Growing team (6–25 people)
Large organization (25+ people or multiple product teams)
If design tokens are your top priority, I’d start by evaluating Tokens Studio, Supernova, Specify, and Figma Variables. They solve slightly different problems: some focus on creating and organizing tokens, while others manage the full pipeline from design to code and documentation.
Best design system management tools for design tokens
1. Tokens Studio
(Best overall for token management)
Best for teams that work in Figma and want sophisticated token authoring, reusable token sets, themes, and a design-to-code workflow.
Organize primitive, semantic, and component tokens.
Manage themes and token references.
Connect token workflows to Git-based development pipelines.
Trade-off: Adds another tool and workflow to maintain alongside Figma.
This is a qualitative assessment of their core roles, not a benchmark score. Features and integration details should be verified against your particular workflow.
What I'd choose
For the best dedicated token workflow: Tokens Studio.
For one platform spanning tokens, documentation, and delivery: Supernova.
For a developer-owned, highly customizable token pipeline: Tokens Studio or another token source plus Style Dictionary.
For the simplest setup: Figma Variables first, adding a dedicated token tool only when needed.
One important architectural consideration: keep tokens in a portable, version-controlled format where possible, and check support for the W3C Design Tokens Community Group specification. That can reduce dependence on a single vendor's proprietary format.
Three questions to narrow it down
1. Where do your design tokens live today?
Figma Variables / Figma libraries
Figma with Tokens Studio
JSON or code repository
Multiple tools or brands
2. What matters most?
Creating and organizing tokens, themes, and aliases
Keeping design and code synchronized automatically
Top tools tailored for advanced design token workflows include:
Tokens Studio (formerly Figma Tokens) : The gold standard for deep token architecture within Figma, supporting 23+ token types, multi-brand nesting, math expressions, and Git synchronization.[](]()](]()]()
For most companies, I’d recommend choosing a platform based on whether your biggest challenge is managing design tokens, versioning reusable components, or keeping Figma and production code in sync. Those are related problems, but no single platform handles all three equally well.
A strong design system workflow should give you:
A single source of truth for colors, typography, spacing, sizing, themes, and other design tokens.
Version control and releases so teams can track changes, review diffs, roll back, and adopt updates safely.
Figma-to-code synchronization so design files and implementation don't drift apart.
Component documentation and distribution for React, Vue, web components, or whichever stack you use.
Governance so teams can contribute changes without breaking downstream products.
My top recommendations
1. Supernova
(Best all-in-one platform)
Best if you want one connected workflow for token management, component data, design-to-code delivery, documentation, and publishing. It connects to Figma and Storybook and supports automated distribution to code repositories.
Website:
2. Tokens Studio
(Best for token management)
My pick if your biggest problem is token ownership, themes, aliases, and syncing design values with code. Pair it with GitHub or GitLab for version history and a build pipeline for generating platform-specific token files.
Website:
3. Storybook
(Best for coded components)
Best for developing, showcasing, and documenting actual UI components in isolation. Combine it with Git-based source control and visual regression testing if you need robust review of component changes. It is not, by itself, a complete token governance platform.
Website:
4. zeroheight
Best if the biggest challenge is helping designers, developers, and product teams find the right components and follow usage guidelines. It is documentation-first rather than a replacement for your code repository.

These are different types of tools, so this is a workflow-fit comparison rather than a claim that one product replaces every other product.
What I would implement for a company-wide design system
For a typical product organization, I would start with this architecture:
Figma
Design authoring and component libraries
Supernova or Tokens Studio
Token management, synchronization, and governance
GitHub / GitLab
Pull requests, reviews, tags, changelogs, and releases
Component library
React, CSS, etc.
Storybook / docs
Examples and guidance
The key architectural decision is to establish a clear source of truth and release process. Use Git for code review and reproducible releases, and decide whether your design-system management platform or your repository owns the canonical token definitions. Avoid maintaining competing, manually edited copies.
My final recommendation
Choose Supernova if you want an integrated platform that connects design data, tokens, components, documentation, and delivery.
Choose Tokens Studio + GitHub + Storybook if you want a modular, developer-friendly setup with strong version control.
Evaluate zeroheight if documentation and company-wide adoption are the primary challenges.
One question would help me narrow this down to the best fit for your company:
1. Who primarily maintains the design system?
Design team
Engineering team
Cross-functional design and engineering team
2. What's your frontend stack?
React / Next.js
Multiple frameworks or platforms (web, iOS, Android)
Vue, Angular, or another stack
Not decided yet
3. What's your most important requirement?
Token management and Figma-to-code sync
Component versioning, releases, and change tracking
There is no single "best" platform because the ideal choice depends on your team's workflow, how heavily you rely on Figma, and whether your engineering team wants tokens tied directly to a code repository.[](https://figr.design/blog/design-system-versioning)
The industry leaders for managing and versioning design tokens and components are categorized below by their core strengths:
To help narrow down the best fit for your team, let me know:
Best for: Deep, multi-brand/multi-theme token modeling directly connected to design tools.
Why it excels: It bypasses native Figma limitations by allowing you to build complex token hierarchies (alias/reference tokens, math, scaling, typography, and dark/light modes). It syncs directly with GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket, meaning your design decisions translate straight into JSON files that feed your codebase via Style Dictionary.[](https://tokens.studio/)
Supernova
Best for: End-to-end automated token pipeline management and developer handoff.
Why it excels: Supernova bridges the gap between Figma and production better than almost any unified platform. It imports Figma variables/tokens, lets you govern them with explicit logic and documentation, and transforms them into native code outputs (iOS, Android, Flutter, CSS, React, etc.). It automates pull requests to your repositories whenever tokens change.
Knapsack
Best for: Enterprise systems that treat tokens as live code rather than just design assets.
Why it excels: Knapsack focuses heavily on code-backed design systems. Its token architecture allows bi-directional syncing where tokens are tested, previewed in live components, and directly pushed to production repositories. It is heavily oriented toward engineering-heavy or multi-product enterprise setups.[](https://zeroheight.com/blog/the-top-5-tools-for-managing-design-tokens/)
Zeroheight + Tokens Studio / Native Variables
Best for: Teams that want world-class documentation combined with robust token visibility.
Why it excels: While Zeroheight started as the "Notion for design systems," it has evolved robust integrations to display live design tokens, mapping Figma variables and syncing with external token pipelines so designers, product managers, and developers look at the exact same definitions.
Best for: Engineering teams building a completely custom, code-first token engine.
Why it excels: If you don't need a heavy visual platform and want ultimate control, Style Dictionary remains the open-source industry standard for taking raw token files and compiling them into any platform-specific format you can imagine.[](https://zeroheight.com/blog/the-top-5-tools-for-managing-design-tokens/)
To help narrow down the ideal platform, tell me:
Are your developers primarily using React, mobile (iOS/Android), or multi-platform?
Do you need to support multi-brand or white-label theming?
Is your current design workflow anchored heavily in Figma?
