Nightfall has a REST scan API specifically designed for real-time sensitive-data filtering. It can detect PII, PHI, PCI, secrets, etc., and return a redacted version of the original text in the same request. Their docs also describe sub-100 ms latency and >1K requests/sec as target capabilities.
Redaction can be configured as:
[EMAIL_ADDRESS][SSN]and you can tell the API to return only the redacted payload, which is useful for ensuring the original never reaches your embedding service.
A clean architecture would be:

vector DBNightfall also explicitly documents filtering data before sending it to AI models and provides SDKs for Python, Java, Go, Node.js and Ruby.
Google's DLP API has a synchronous content.deidentify operation that can inspect text and immediately return the de-identified version. It supports masking, deletion, replacement with tokens/surrogates, and cryptographic transformations.
This is particularly interesting for RAG/vector stores, because you don't necessarily want to replace:
"John Smith's account..."
with meaningless ********.
You can instead pseudonymize:
[PERSON_1]'s account...
or use deterministic cryptographic tokens, preserving useful semantic structure while preventing the actual identity from entering the embedding corpus. Google documents reversible and non-reversible cryptographic approaches.
It can also process data outside Google Cloud through the API without requiring the source data to be persisted there.
Cloudmersive exposes a straightforward synchronous endpoint:
POST /dlp/redact/text
It detects PII and redacts disallowed types by deleting them or replacing them with asterisks. Its advanced endpoint supports 34 configurable categories, including health-related PHI.
This is attractive if you want a simple API rather than building a DLP policy engine.
Amazon Comprehend can detect PII synchronously through DetectPiiEntities, with a 100 KB input limit.
There's an important catch for your use case: AWS's PII redaction operation is asynchronous. AWS explicitly distinguishes real-time detection from asynchronous redaction.
So you'd have to:
text → Comprehend detection → offsets
→ your application performs replacement
→ embeddingThat's workable, but I'd favor Nightfall or Google if you specifically want one synchronous redaction API call in the ingestion path.
For a production vector-ingestion system, I'd actually avoid simply deleting every PII value. Use type-preserving pseudonymization where possible:
Original:
"Jane Smith called from 555-123-4567 about her account."
Sanitized:
"[PERSON] called from [PHONE] about her account."
↓ embedding
Vector DB:
embedding(sanitized text)
metadata:
pii_detected: true
pii_types: ["PERSON", "PHONE"]That gives the embedding model useful semantic information without putting the actual identity into the vector corpus.
If you need to preserve entity relationships across documents, use deterministic tokens instead:
"Jane Smith contacted support."
→ "[PERSON_8f31] contacted support."
"Jane Smith's order was refunded."
→ "[PERSON_8f31]'s order was refunded."That is generally much more useful for RAG than irreversible masking.
My shortlist: Nightfall for the easiest real-time AI/RAG ingestion guardrail; Google Sensitive Data Protection if you need sophisticated enterprise pseudonymization; Presidio if keeping the entire detection/redaction layer under your own infrastructure is a priority.
One architectural point is critical: redact before the embedding model, not after the vector is created. Once raw PII has influenced an embedding, deleting the source text from the vector DB doesn't guarantee that information isn't encoded in the vector itself.
Leaking PII into a vector store is a severe compliance risk because vector embeddings can sometimes be inverted or leak semantic/exact attribute data, and standard vector databases lack native, context-aware PII stripping upon ingestion.[](https://www.datasunrise.com/knowledge-center/pgvector-protecting-data-from-exposure-via-vector-embeddings/)[[2](https://grepture.com/product/pii-redaction)](https://grepture.com/product/pii-redaction)
To fix this, you should intercept text before it hits your embedding generation or vector database pipeline using a specialized data-masking/redaction API or an LLM security gateway. Real-time PII redaction and anonymization options fit into a few distinct architectural categories:[](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/pii-protection-ai-apis-gateway)[[2](https://grepture.com/product/pii-redaction)](https://grepture.com/product/pii-redaction)
/anonymize ) that sits right before their vector ingestion worker. It leverages a combination of regular expressions, pattern matchers, and Named Entity Recognition (NER via spaCy).Rather than writing custom ingestion logic, many production teams route vector-bound text payloads through an AI security gateway configured with inline PII-masking policies:[](https://medium.com/@say_gm_/pii-redaction-and-audit-logs-for-llms-a-practical-guide-790d16b66793)[[2](https://grepture.com/product/pii-redaction)](https://zuplo.com/learning-center/pii-protection-ai-apis-gateway)
The most robust pattern to stop PII leakage into a vector store doesn't rely entirely on a third-party black-box API for the embeddings themselves; rather, it introduces a two-step ingestion middleware:
[PERSON_1], SSN: [REDACTED_SSN]).If you need a managed zero-data-retention vendor to host this pipeline inside your own Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), look into enterprise solutions like Private AI or deploying an internal Microsoft Presidio microservice.
Real-time PII (Personally Identifiable Information) filtering for LLM embedding workflows and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines usually follows a "Sanitize → Embed/Process → Store" pattern. Intercepting data before it gets vectorized ensures that raw secrets, names, or financial records never land permanently in your vector database or leak into third-party embedding APIs.[](https://medium.com/data-science-collective/essential-guide-to-llm-guardrails-llama-guard-nemo-d16ebb7cbe82)[[2](https://blog.prompt20.com/posts/production-safety-guardrails)](https://blog.prompt20.com/posts/production-safety-guardrails/)

Yes. For an LLM embedding/RAG workflow, the key distinction is whether a product can inspect and sanitize the source text before it is tokenized, embedded, and written to the vector store. That is much stronger than detecting PII only after retrieval or in the LLM response.

Filtering PII in real-time before document ingestion, chunking, and vector embedding is crucial to prevent embedding inversion attacks and data leakage. Several open-source frameworks, enterprise data-loss prevention (DLP) platforms, and LLM gateways offer this capability during the RAG ingestion pipeline.[](https://philterd.ai/use-cases/ai/)

If you need to filter personally identifiable information (PII) in real time, before text is embedded and written to a vector database, look for a solution that sits directly in your ingestion pipeline—not just a data-loss-prevention tool that scans stored data afterward.
The key capabilities are:
One important distinction: filtering PII only before storage may be insufficient. If your embedding provider receives the original text, sensitive information has already left your ingestion boundary.
These are the strongest candidates I found, from purpose-built redaction services to cloud APIs and self-hosted libraries.
For production LLM features, I’d separate the problem into two layers: PII protection (detecting and redacting sensitive data) and LLM guardrails (blocking harmful content, prompt injection, and data leakage). A single tool can cover both, but the best choice depends on whether you prioritize privacy, safety, deployment control, or ease of integration.
1. Microsoft Presidio
(Best open-source PII baseline)
Detects and anonymizes PII in text, images, and structured data. Supports configurable recognizers and redaction, masking, hashing, and encryption.
Best for: teams that want self-hosting, control over data handling, and custom entity detection.
Trade-off: you own deployment, tuning, and the separate content-moderation layer.
2. Lakera Guard (Check Point AI Guardrails)
(Best integrated AI security)
Covers PII and data leakage prevention, content moderation, prompt injection, jailbreaks, and agent-related threats. It supports screening both inputs and outputs.
Best for: customer-facing chat, RAG, and agentic features where security goes beyond simple redaction.
Trade-off: evaluate API cost, latency, detector coverage, and deployment requirements.
3. LLM Guard
An open-source middleware option to evaluate for input/output scanning, sensitive-information detection, and content-risk checks.
Best for: Python-based applications that want a customizable, code-first guardrail pipeline.
Trade-off: verify the maintenance status, current scanner implementations, and accuracy against your own test cases.
4. Amazon Bedrock Guardrails
A managed option to evaluate if your LLM workload already runs on AWS. It is designed to apply configurable safety controls to model interactions.
Best for: AWS-native applications seeking managed filtering rather than operating every detector themselves.
Trade-off: assess model/provider portability and whether its PII controls meet your exact redaction requirements.
These are candidates for a technical evaluation, not a claim that one wins every accuracy or latency benchmark. Presidio and LLM Guard are code-first choices; Lakera and Bedrock offer different managed-security approaches.
| Your priority | My first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted PII redaction | Presidio | Flexible, customizable, avoids requiring a third-party PII API |
| PII + content safety + prompt injection | Lakera Guard | Dedicated AI security controls across LLM interactions |
| AWS-native managed filtering | Bedrock Guardrails | Built-in PII masking, content filters, and denied topics |
For Bedrock, note that PII masking does not automatically cover every tool-call argument or tool result, and invocation logs may still contain the original text. These are important integration details to test.
For a typical production LLM feature, I would implement the following pipeline:
1. User input
Chat, uploaded documents, retrieved context
2. Input privacy filter
Detect and redact PII, credentials, secrets, and custom identifiers
Presidio or a managed PII detector
3. Security and policy checks
Prompt injection, prohibited topics, harmful content, access policy
Lakera, Bedrock Guardrails, or custom checks
4. LLM and tools
Use least-privilege tool access and enforce authorization outside the model
5. Output validation
Check for PII leakage, unsafe content, and policy violations before returning or storing the response
One key design decision: redact before sending data to the model, then validate the response before exposing it to the user. Also apply privacy controls to logs, traces, tool arguments, and retrieved documents—not just the main chat message.
Before committing, test each against the same representative dataset:

When securing LLM features against PII leaks and toxic/unsafe content, the "best" tool depends on whether you want an open-source library to embed in code, a self-hosted gateway/proxy , or a managed enterprise SaaS.

Skyflow is particularly interesting for your use case because its current AI-data-protection material explicitly describes protecting “vector DBs, embeddings, and RAG chains.” It can detect and sanitize sensitive data in real time, with tokenization/reversible protection when the original value needs to be recovered.
A good architecture is:
raw documents → Skyflow detection/sanitization → cleaned text → embedding model → vector DB
This means the original PII never becomes part of the embedding input.
Presidio is probably the most straightforward choice if you want to build the control yourself. Its Analyzer detects PII using regex, rules, checksums and NER/contextual models, while the Anonymizer can redact, replace, hash, or encrypt detected values. It can run locally, in Docker, or as an HTTP service.
It also has examples for pseudonymization, external detectors, and PII masking around LLM calls.
For an embedding pipeline:

vector DBThe important caveat: Presidio itself warns that automated detection cannot guarantee that all sensitive information will be found, so a defense-in-depth design is appropriate.
Bedrock Guardrails can detect PII in input prompts and model responses and either block or mask it. AWS says its sensitive-information detection is context-dependent and can also use custom regex patterns.
However, I would not treat Guardrails alone as an embedding-data protection layer. For ingestion, AWS itself documents a stronger RAG pattern where data is redacted before ingestion, verified with Macie, and only then processed into chunks and indexed into the vector store.
That architecture is much closer to what you want.
Google's Sensitive Data Protection API has an explicit content.deidentify operation: inspect text for configured infoTypes and return de-identified data. Google notes that limiting detection to the infoTypes you actually need can reduce request latency.
It's a reasonable building block for a GCP-based ingestion service, although it is less specifically focused on embedding/vector workflows than Skyflow.
Nightfall is more of an enterprise AI/DLP enforcement layer than a simple PII library. Its current platform describes real-time detection and remediation, including intercepting and redacting sensitive information in prompts before it reaches AI platforms. It detects PII, PHI, PCI and secrets using ML/LLM-based detectors.
It's particularly attractive if your concern isn't just your controlled embedding pipeline but also employees sending data to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.
If embeddings/RAG are the primary problem:
One architectural point is especially important: don't rely on post-embedding filtering. Once PII has been incorporated into an embedding and persisted in a vector database, you have already created a data-leakage surface. The security boundary should ideally be:
PII detection → sanitization/tokenization → embedding → vector storage
rather than:
embedding → vector storage → PII detection.
Also consider running a second detector against the sanitized corpus before indexing; AWS's documented RAG architecture uses exactly this kind of secondary verification with Macie.
If you tell me your stack (e.g. OpenAI embeddings + Pinecone, Azure OpenAI + Azure AI Search, Bedrock + OpenSearch, or self-hosted models), I can narrow this to the 2–3 best solutions and show the exact insertion point in the pipeline.
(Closest fit to your requirement)
An OpenAI-compatible embeddings endpoint that redacts sensitive text before forwarding it for embedding. Its documented design is specifically intended to prevent raw PII from entering vector stores such as Pinecone, pgvector, and Weaviate.
Best for: Minimal changes to an existing OpenAI embeddings integration.
Website:
(Strong for self-hosting)
Offers an API-based redaction service and an embeddable redaction engine. Supports configurable policies, consistent replacements, and multiple deployment patterns. Philter documents integrations and privacy-aware RAG patterns for Chroma, Qdrant, Milvus, pgvector, and OpenSearch k-NN.
Best for: Organizations that want control over deployment, policies, and data locality.
Website:
Provides scanning and redaction APIs for PII, protected health information, payment-card data, credentials, and other sensitive content. Its developer APIs support text inspection and configurable redaction, with integrations for AI and data workflows.
Best for: Enterprise-grade detection and a broader AI data security program.
Implementation note: Put its scan-and-redact API in the ingestion path; don't assume a general DLP deployment automatically protects your embedding pipeline.
Website:
Formerly known as Cloud Data Loss Prevention (Cloud DLP), it exposes APIs that inspect text and redact, mask, or tokenize detected sensitive values. You can call the API synchronously from your ingestion service before embedding.
Best for: Teams already on Google Cloud that want managed detection and de-identification.
Website:
An open-source toolkit for detecting and anonymizing PII in text. It supports custom recognizers, multiple NLP engines, and deployment using Python packages or containers. You can place it directly between document chunking and embedding.
Best for: Engineering teams that want a customizable, self-managed solution without depending on a proprietary redaction API.
Trade-off: You own deployment, tuning, performance, and the validation needed to catch missed PII.
Website:
| Platform | Redacts before embedding? | Deployment model | Main advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grepture | Yes, in its documented embedding flow | API proxy | Minimal integration changes |
| Philter / Phileas | Yes, when placed in ingestion pipeline | API or embedded engine | Control and customization |
| Nightfall AI | Yes, when its API is used before embedding | Managed API | Broader sensitive-data detection |
| Google Sensitive Data Protection | Yes, via synchronous API call | Managed cloud service | Enterprise de-identification controls |
| Microsoft Presidio | Yes, when placed before embedding | Self-hosted library or service | Open source and extensible |
“Real-time” here means the platform supports an online processing path; actual latency and throughput depend on configuration and workload. Verify performance with your own documents.
1. Ingest documents
Connectors, uploads, events, or streaming data
2. Detect and redact PII
Presidio, Philter, Nightfall, or Google Sensitive Data Protection
3. Chunk sanitized text
Apply chunking to the redacted content
4. Generate embeddings
Send only sanitized text to the embedding model
5. Store vectors and sanitized metadata
Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate, Milvus, pgvector, etc.
One important implementation detail: enforce the rule at the ingestion boundary, not just in application conventions. If redaction fails or times out, fail closed rather than sending the original text to the embedding service. Also inspect metadata and document identifiers, not only document bodies.
These recommendations are based on documented capabilities, not independent benchmark results.
Three questions would help narrow this to the best fit for your stack:
1. Where does your ingestion pipeline run?
AWS
Azure
Google Cloud
On-premises / private Kubernetes
Multi-cloud
2. What deployment model do you prefer?
Managed API / SaaS
Self-hosted, inside our environment
Either, if security requirements are met
3. Which embedding model are you using?
OpenAI embeddings
Amazon Bedrock
Azure OpenAI
Self-hosted model

Companies that back open-source products often provide a paid SAAS version with more capabilities. Especially for PII masking, I prefer a local solution; it feels weird to send your data to a remote service for masking, only to have an LLM search for that PII.
The Langfuse masking feature runs a function you define over trace data before it is sent, so sensitive values never leave your application... This is the right default layer because it fails safe (data that is masked at the source cannot leak downstream)...
