Financial health analysis service for non-technical founders

To help narrow down the right fit, could you share:

• What is your startup's current stage (pre-revenue, bootstrapping, or venture-backed)?
• Do you already have clean bookkeeping in place, or do you need help starting from scratch?

What I'd choose based on your situation

One important distinction: a bookkeeper tells you what happened; a CFO helps you understand what it means and what you might do next. Pilot explicitly structures its CFO service around forecasting, runway, pricing, hiring, investor reporting and strategic decisions.Pilot

If you tell me your company type (SaaS, agency, e-commerce, services, etc.), annual revenue, and whether you're bootstrapped or VC-funded, I can narrow this down to the 2–3 services that make the most sense and what you'd likely pay for each.

My top pick:Pilot

Pilot looks particularly well suited to a non-finance founder because it combines the bookkeeping with a CFO layer. Its dashboards automatically show things founders actually need to understand: cash position, burn rate, runway, spending trends, revenue/expense trends, and KPIs.pilot.com

The important distinction is:

• Bookkeeper: “Here is what happened to your money.”
• CFO: “Here is what happened, why it happened, how long your cash will last, and what you should consider doing next.”

Pilot explicitly structures its CFO service around that second piece, including forecasting, headcount decisions, pricing, board preparation, and fundraising support.pilot.com

Another strong option:Burkland Associates

I'd consider Burkland if you're a venture-backed startup or expect to raise institutional capital. They provide a broader outsourced finance team—bookkeeping, tax, FP&A, financial modeling, and fractional CFO services—and say they work with 800+ venture-backed startups.burklandassociates.com

Their fractional CFO offering specifically covers cash/runway planning, financial modeling, KPIs, forecasting, fundraising and board reporting. Their published CFO pricing starts at $1,600/month, with higher tiers at $2,500 and $4,200/month.burklandassociates.com

They also offer bookkeeping starting at $495/month, so you can potentially build up from accounting to strategic finance as your company gets more complicated.burklandassociates.com

What I'd choose based on your situation

One thing I'd not do is hire a traditional accountant and expect them to answer strategic questions. Accounting tells you what happened; FP&A/CFO work turns those numbers into forecasts and decisions. Burkland makes that distinction explicitly.burklandassociates.com

If you tell me roughly your startup's stage (pre-revenue / <$1M revenue / $1–5M / $5M+), whether you've raised funding, and how many employees you have, I can narrow this down to the best 2–3 options and what you should expect to pay.
