News Leaders Association (NLA) is a nonprofit organization formed by a merger of ASNE and APME that focuses on newsroom leadership, diversity, and First Amendment protections in journalism through leadership training, DEI programs, and annual awards. It runs programs such as the Emerging Leaders Institute, conducts diversity surveys, and administers awards including the NLA Awards and the Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship for educators. In 2024 the NLA voted to dissolve, with its programs and assets being transferred to other organizations—Poynter Institute will receive the NLA Awards, the Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship will be administered by Journal-isms, and Sunshine Week stewardship will move to the Brechner Freedom of Information Project.
