The AI gateway in Azure API Management provides a unified set of capabilities to secure, scale, monitor, and govern AI models, agents, and tools used by AI-powered apps, supporting deployments from Microsoft Foundry, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, and self-hosted models. It offers authentication and authorization, load balancing, token usage quotas, traffic mediation, and self-service for developer teams, plus the ability to import AI endpoints as APIs, expose REST endpoints as MCP servers, and apply policies for scalability, security, and observability. It integrates with Microsoft Foundry, supports governance of chat completions and real-time APIs, and enables onboarding and management of A2A agent APIs (preview) as well as token-based quota control across multiple apps.
