The Guideline Elements Model (GEM) is an XML-based guideline document model that stores and organizes the heterogeneous information contained in clinical practice guidelines. It facilitates translating natural language guideline documents into a computer-processable format and supports the entire guideline lifecycle—development, dissemination, implementation, and maintenance—across high and low levels of abstraction. The GEM schema comprises more than 100 elements in 10 major branches and has been balloted as an international standard for XML representation of guidelines, with BRIDGE-Wiz Online available for use.
